So as on a previous post i noticed my engine randomly smoking. Well it seemed to worse today.
What I can say is when the engine is running if I remove the oil cap their seems to be a lot of pressure blowing out and spitting oil. There is an initial hiss when I release the oil cap.

Thoughts!

Thanks.

So this is what happens.

the cars been outside and the wife went to see a local friend. Car started smoking on her way home, came out to m eet her and it was smoking bad. Reved it but just stayed the same, drove it round the estate and sill the same.

Tonight took it out with my son following in his car. the car for about 2 miles wa smoking but not to bad. about 5 mins into tyhe journey the smoking stopped, came onto the M4 and gave a blast to junction 3. Nice and clear no smoke. came back and turned of into the high streets so as the car would stop and start in traffic etc. still all clear no smoke. Sat at lights reving it. pulled away in low gears to put car under load and still no smoke...made it home sat outside for 5 mins and still good.

i reckon that tomorrow if i take it out it will smoke at some point early into the journey and then clear. To me doesnt sound like anything obvious, head, piston, guides etc! but clearly inst wright....

in my head its like something builds up over night and then is burnt of in the mix and just requires blowing out! i dont really know.

any thoughts appreciated.....

I f there is a lot of pressure when you remove the filler cap then I would say there was some kind of issue with the PCV system that stops pressure building up in the crankcase. If a lot of pressure builds up then the oil that should flow back from the turbo to the sump doesn't. This causes a lot of oil pressure in the turbo as the oil can't freely drain. It will force it's way past the oil seals and end up appearing as smoke from the exhaust.

condensation in the exhaust ??? over fueling when cold ???

read through this mate might help ???

i have looked at the post, just doesn't seem to be the same as mine, mines not puffing on start up or when cold,

seems worse almost what you would expect to be coming out the car all the time with a serious problem, But mine stops and is then fine. I have no loss of power what so ever and pulls very well.

Yes, with the engine running when i took the oil cap of, as i turned it it hissed, and oil spots were going everywhere. But definitely hissed.

So what is PCV ?

so this morning the wife went out on a few journeys around town, no smoke. Yet from the video you would of thought it was a catastrophic failure somewhere and would bellow out smoke all the time.

can anyone tell me what the PCV looks like and on my engine where it is located please...

Is yours large plums of thick white smoke that fills the road?

Reason I ask is because this is what mines done, always seemed to happen after it had been washed (or so it felt) so I thought it was maybe just water that had went up the exhaust. Turned out to be a failing turbo as it eventually went bang!

Could be worth taking the front pipe off the turbo and checking for any shaft play to be on the safe side, as it only takes a few minutes to do this (hopefully it's not though) as mines done it for months with no effect on the drive ability of the car.

Replied on your other thread but after seeing the symptoms it sounds like My Friends Bora PD which would smoke awfully when it felt like it then run clear in the same sort of circumstances. Finally diagnosed pcv fault and replaced rocker cover which is where its situated and problem solved. Rocker cover wasn't as cheap as the separate pcv though.

Thanks spotted your other post. I hope it is the pcv as apossed to something more drastic.

I think i am having a similar issue to yourself (guna make a post in a mo)
Basiclly the car seems to drive fine and run spot on (egr deleted mapped with hybrid and cat deleted aswell)

Long story short it has developed a intermittent smoking problem
Dosent really spoke when cold more when warmed up.
You can drive for a while and it wont smoke then all of a sudden you can stop at the lights and it will chuck loads out on idel or when pulling away looks like a white/blue/grey smoke
Pull up at the next lights and its gone, seems to come and go as it pleases but when it smokes it smokes like a 50 a day bloke

Have you managed to replace your cam cover with pvc valve in yet and did it cure the issue
Im planning on fitting a catch can to mine as a temp fix to see if it cures the issue

Hi mate. Sounds like a similar issue. I have not yet changed the valve as I was hoping to get some more advice on weather I can check it as on mine it's built into the rocker cover and will not be cheap I imagine

Awaiting a few more responses

i believe on all the 2.0 tdi they are built into the rocker, i have had the cap of mine and there is a diaphragm inside which was kinda distorted but not ripped/ torn in anyway, Preety easy to do if carefull with a small screwdriver, on the front of the cover were the breather pipe goes down into the turbo the cap on mine just clipped off and then released the diaphram and a small spring inside.

i think i may have to fit the catch can of my golf onto it tonight and test it throughout the week and see the outcome before i spend money on one, mine dosent seem to presurrise the block tho, no hissing when the cap or dipstick is removed

Not sure
From the research ive done i belive there all set up very similar apart from turbo options and injectors on the 170 ones
Mines the bre 140bhp model

Not sure it can be opened up. I think it's a sealed unit.

Is yours the 1.9tdi engine bud
Yours does look like a sealed unit compared to.mine

ahh that be why it looks like the 1.9, mines the 16v twin cam so slightly diffrent cam cover, ill fit this catch can and report back if it stops the smoking and fixes the issue, fingers crossed it does then i may bite the bullet and order the cover

I'm not convinced fitting a catch can will prove anything since the pcv valve will still be in place, From my understanding its a build up of pressure in the crankcase due to the pcv not allowing it out which then causes the oil past seals due to increased pressure rather than oil being allowed through the breather pipe into the intake which a catch can would cure.

Well i borrowed a rocker cover from a mates a4 blb and fitted it to mine
Made no difference at all still smoking

I am stilled mystified by it all. I just don't want to spend a fortune on a garage to spend days on it to tell me that it's a silly little thing and that my bill is huge ££££££

Same buddy,
I went to my local indy yesterday and had a good chat with him about the issue and he thinks it may be the injector seals, i have ordered them and they arrived this morning so im guna swap them over 2moz for what its worth.

After that im completely stumped and out of ideas,
Alot of others threads on forums have said torsion (cam timing) can cause this but i have reset mine and the issue is still here.

If the seals dont cure it i may send it 2 my local specialist and let them spend a hour or 2 having a look after than im breaking the car as its driving me round the bend.
