I bought an Audi A3 2009 2.0 140 CR TDI a few weeks ago. Car had 102k miles on the clock and when asked about the cam belt and water pump, the owner said that the previous owner had them changed at 80k however, he didn't have any receipts for this. Took it to a Audi dealer last week for a health check and as there was no record of a cambelt change, they advised that it should be changed. However, I have checked my service book and it says the interval for 2.0 TDI's is 114k miles? I also took it for an MOT and asked the garage to have a quick look at the cambelt and was told that it looked to be in pretty good condition. So question is, should I change it now or leave it?

Audi are charging about £600 whereas an Independent Audi Specialist is quoting £270 for Cam belt and Water Pump

Go with the independent specialist , age is also a factor with the belt. Seen as the history isint quite clear get it done now. Atleast then you have peace of mind.

If the cam belt change was outside of the dealer network, then Audi wouldn’t have a record regardless if it’s been done or not.

As above get it to an Independant Specialist, worth checking the oil pump balance shaft hex drive key while you're there.

If in doubt change it. 270 is a small price to pay when the result of not changing and it jumping a cog is expensive to say the least

Thanks for the replies and its obvious thag changing it right now should be the way forward. Also to note, I have a aftermarket warranty from Motoreasy who cover any damage that arises from a potential cambelt failure providing ir has been serviced to manufactures guidlines. Seeing as it states 114k in the service book, they should pay out for any damages. As my mechanic also said the belt lookes to be in good condition, Would it be an idiot move getting it replaced at around the 110k mark and if it goes in the meantime, use the motoreasy warranty?

@SA95 for piece of mind and for the price quoted get it done. I needed a new cam chain and tensioner 6 weeks after having the chain & tensioner done (genuine parts) so although your cam belt may look fine is it worth the risk?

As @igooch says, the warranty company will do all they can to get our of it. Luckily the warranty company (not Motoreasy) covered the 2nd chain kit but it wasn’t a straight forward process...

You could go to Audi with the Indie quote and ask them to price match it. They have done it for me in the past.

You'll get genuine audi parts then
