I did it in the end but jeeze, I must really be cack handed!!

I used a funnel to make sure I didn't lose the screw which worked well but I think that in the process of removing the light I made a very slight tear on the seal (the big one on the top of the headlight).
Plus I lost the circular cover putting it back in.....

Then I thought I'd try doing the other side- now that screw didn't even shift. And guess what? I lost the cover on that side too...

On the plus side the defective bulb was replaced successfully.
 
So you did have a defective bulb. You can get suitable grommets from any motor factor / Halfords - which will do the job fine.

did you take the bottom 2 bolts out or just loosen them?

if you loosen them by about 3 turns, the headlamp slides out nice and easy. :)

Wasn't my headlights- it was my brake light!
