  • Front suspension arms/bushes (O/S/F ball joint worn
  • Steering area (Play in N/S steering Knuckle
  • Both Front Drive Shaft Boots
  • V-Belt Heavily Cracked
  • Rear Coil Springs Snapped

If anyone can help please do

Hummm... over dramatised the thread title a little haven't we lol...

Parts can be bought from GSF/Euro Carparts/Dealer/TPS... these are fairly normal things to wear out...

The car won't be 'dead' as you have put it but the parts list alone will hit 100-150 quid depending and 'some' hours labour... the spring will be dealer only unless you can get one off a car being broken or a scrappy/eBay

Not sure how you want use to help tbh...

If you can't do it yourself then a decent local garage can do this cheaper than a dealer..

very over dramatised sorry lol just was gutted when audi tried saying over 4grand for everything fixed through them but now decided what im doing as the coil spring is snapped its time for coilovers and everything else is minor ill do next week, but does anyone know where im able to get a steering knuckle from?

seriously over dramatised heading.
definition of dead needs looking up....me thinks.
Anyway, call me a sceptic, I just find Audi's free health check a bit on the questionable side....most times.

When's your MOT? - most of these will be probably be pointed out as warnings or failures depending on how bad they are. rear springs will definite fail and need addressing. As Tufty mentions, regular wear stuff, rear broken springs definite common problem with the S3.

FOUR GRAND! :faint:

That's more than your car is worth right? lol Audi health checks = WIN(for Audi dealerships and a donkey customer who would pay such an amount!)

Steering knuckle sounds like track rod end, which are like not expensive at all. I'd go to a VAG Indy and get a quote for that work, I'd be surprised if it can't be done for well under a grand including parts.

Steering knuckle? now you put near side in the original post so are you referring to the steering arm ball joint or the steering column itself? as its a common issue for the universal joints on the steering columns to get a bit of play which typically requires a new steering column to fix it... which is why I can see Audi would want to charge so much

As thegoal007 has said, Audi will find fault in everything... new v belt is 15 quid, front suspension arm is a bit of a vague description fault wise to comment, drive shaft boots are around 15/20 each (fit genuine ones tbh) and a 1 to 1.5 hours to fit...

I have a slight movement in the steering which I think is the universal joints but its never been picked up in an MOT so not done anything with it... you should be able to get something like this from GSF but may have to be a dealer part..

from the quotation sheet this is what audi have put

Steering Area
Description-Track CONTROL A it aslo says Play in N/S Inner steering knukle

£4000 is taking the mickey big time. I'd expect that lot to be sorted by an independent Audi Specialist for £500 tops A lot of it you could do yourself with a little mechanical savvy or a helpfull mate with some.

That sounds like the track rod arm.... they are about 15/20 ish quid from memory? relatively easy to change and not expensive... did they give a breakdown on price? labour/parts? 4k seems a rather arbitrary figure to me...

yep for the part it is 161 from audi but i have a part number which is

V8N0407151D

and total parts from audi on there (quotation for work) is £1554.90
total labour £1589.25 + VAT £628.83

and all this is with millitary discount

The worrying thing is i wonder how many people actually pay them to do this work as they dont know any better and think Audi is helping them out!

Although this site makes me spend money its defo saved me a fair few quid too :)

That PN (8N0407151D) is the whole lower arm... which is the normal trick audi use to replace just a bush...

A bush is 5-10 quid and just needs pressing in... the arm would need to be undone at the ball joint anyway to do the CV boots... so not much more effort to remove completely and press in new bushes certainly not 161 + labour

Not a difficult job tbh

With blatant rip of prices like that i think they should be named and shamed if you have the quote to scan in as black and white proof that may stop some other poor sod being ripped off

I don't think name and shame is a good thing,if the procedure in their book for this is to change the arm rather than just the bush then what else are they to do ?
Go to an independent for the work

thanks for all this help guys it was exeter audi which quoted this as i am freinds with the son of audi south west's MD i thought they may not try to rip me off but owell indy it is ive ordered coilies to sort the snapped coil spring i have a GATES cam belt kit on order for 86£ which is a bargain think audi were just trying to rip people off

why go to the dealer? would be my first question. find a trustworthy independant that speaks in black and white.

i mean a "free car check"? if they dont find anything "wrong" with the cars they "check" how do they make money? think about it.

get an independant to check out what theyve highlighted.

Exeter Audi well known for over inflated prices sadly, would never ever ever ever use them. If your Exeter way try the Audi VW Centre in Pennsylvania, very good idependant garage and from personal experience do a great job at a decent price, will allways tell you whats what and whats not.

That's the trick isn't it?, everyone likes freebies!
