Guys

I drag race my Stage 3 S3 and in the chase for a 10s car I have been reducing weight for the events. I have the opportunity to buy a 4.5kg front seat which I am very keen to purchase and put in place for the day. However, I have no idea about seat rails, what to get, where to get, fixed or sliding, etc...

I am thinking more about a fixed rail, as it will only be me in the car, its for one day and shouldn't cause me any issues getting in and out (hopefully). Also, I would assume a fixed rail is cheaper?

You could look at a Planted Technology base. It’ll bolt straight in, and you can then mount the seat on top of that. You will likely need some side mount brackets for the seat though. Very easy to add a set of generic sliders too if you wanted movement, but could also be bolted on in a fixed position if it’s just for race days.

See photos below - this is a set of pole positions with side mounts, sitting on a set of sliders, which are then mounted on the Planted Technology bases. Would be easy to remove the sliders and mount direct though. You can see the little feet where the base gets bolted to the car - these are positioned specific to your car so they should be a direct fit.

This is probably one of the easier options if you’re going to be swapping the seat out quite often.

Your other option is to source a cheap old OEM seat, dismantle it so you’re left with just the base, and modify it to take your seat. This is what I ended up doing in my B5 but I don’t think it’s a particularly light option, however it does probably give the cleanest look if done right. Probably not something you’re concerned with though.

Again see photos below for what I started with, how the brackets look with the flat bar welded on, and how the seats look fitted. The bases are nearly completely hidden and I have full sliding functionality.

I reckon with these it would probably take about 45 minutes to an hour to swap the bucket out a re-fit the standard seat.
