After some info about rot under pollen filter housing. I know passats suffer form this.
I removed mine today, no rot thank god.
Wonder if there is any sealant required between housing, foam seal and body?

I would , just under the seal , the foam skirt tends to get compressed allowing debris to trap water by the seal .

The seal will suffer , just a matter of time .

Personally I'd renew as the complete housing is extremely cheap considering the catastrophic damage a leaking one can do .

I’ve used butyl roll in the past for sealing stuff with good results.

iirc that’s what VW give you as a replacement seal on the b5.5’s.
