So I went yesterday to get some new tyres fitted for the winter I got Michelin CrossClimate + for my winter wheels. I have run specific winter tyres in the past but wanted to try something more suited to the British weather.

What I found when the wheels were removed was something quite disturbing the front drivers wheel was through to the steels on the inner edge and the passenger was wearing thin on the inner edge ! Got lucky was probably not to far away from a blowout.....

They are pirelli cinturato p7 Blue

IMG 4855

IMG 4860

Tracking was checked drivers side was fine castor was out a smidge but camber and toe were pretty much bang on. The passenger side was slightly out on the toe but otherwise fine ! So the worst worn wheel had near perfect alignment.

IMG 4857

Has anyone seen this kind of wear before is it a suspension issue etc.

I have had the car for about 6 months and have covered about 7k the tyres look to be the originals from the date code so have done 23k the rears still have at least 4-5mm on them .... The fronts are near the limit but not on it. I have never seen wear like this before on another car i have owned . All that they seem to of worn well. I used to have a front wheel drive SAAB that ate front tyres used to barley get 10K from Sport Contacts, stuck like glue to the road though =)

Regularly check pressure and haven't seen any problems.

Have the car booked into Audi Bedford for it to be checked over tomorrow, see what happens .......

The tracking went out on my last A3 and wore the front tyres on the inside (got 23k from P zeros on the front). I had it from new and don't remember hitting anything to knock the tracking out.
Audi will shrug their shoulders and charge you £120 to check and set the suspension geometry.
Check your tyre wear when you check the pressures

Pressures checked regularly the tracking is not out to cause that kind of wear !

That’s quite worrying looking.
Glad you caught it before it blew up.
Looks to me a combination of negative camber and under inflation to just wear the inside edge like that.
If you checked regularly and geometry is near spot on then it could be carrying heavy loads.
The etron gubbins must weigh a ton and it could be the tyres and tyre pressures needs to be a bit higher to account for the extra weight. I’m just guessing of course.
I had the opposite on my old car. Extra wear in the middle cause I do mostly long motorway journeys so the tyre heats up and ups the pressure a bit.

Nope have pretty mixed driving country roads, motorway and town mixed and random not the same route every day. No speed bumps really. As I said kept them at the recommended pressures in the door ..... I wonder if most of the damage was done then before I got the car.

If it was speed bumps would you not see the same wear on the rears ? They have worn evenly

Right so this is definitely looking like an Audi issue now, to see that A4 thread linked in I am even more concerned!!

My P-Zero’s were sent off to Pirelli and no manufacturing fault was found, they have inspected my car and on full lock the wheel turning the most is hardly touching the ground, maybe only 20% of the treat footprint is on the tarmac and this is the issue, Audi can’t just sort this out easily and I can’t see me getting anywhere when I go in. I will be writing up a more detailed thread which I will post in this section as well as the RS3 section and see what the results are.

Well that was the most disappointing customer service experience I have ever had.
Basically they wanted to charge me £100 to do an alignment said it wasn't a warranty issue, blamed the dealer I bought the car off my driving everything but potentially there was something wrong with the car when I bought it. No one would take responsibility, I phoned Audi UK there and then and they would not even tell them to do it ! Terrible.... the manager even said they wouldn't do it to keep me a happy customer because the alignment took 2Hrs. He was just plain rude basically told me he didn't want to help because I had't bought the car from him and had no reason to make me a happy customer.

I left basically saying both Audi Bedford and Audi UK were happy for me to drive off in a car that was eating its front tyres and potentially having a dangerous fault without even looking at it in the 2hrs I was there. All over them squabbling over who was going to pay £100 (which isn't even the real cost to the dealer !). Thats how much Audi cares about you as a customer !

Very interested in hearing other peoples experiences.

Wow shocking! I've had great experiences with my local dealer (Audi Huntingdon) if you're Bedford not a million miles away, but a trek I agree. Never had an issue, dad just got a new A1 from them and just picked up today a 6 month old A6 Avant black edition.

I had one issue where my S3 said it needed an inspection and I went to them and said I thought it was done with my oil, I was told it wasn't so I'd have to pay for the inspection and have it done. But he went off and checked, a balls up on their system but they reset my interval and apologised. So peaks and troughs but very good on the whole.

It's just a consequence of having a network of franchised dealers who really have no interest in the brand as a whole it seems only their own customers and are too short sighted about long term relationships with customers and Audi UK not prepared to take responsibility for their dealers actions....

I have spoken again to Audi UK and it has been escalated to a manager.... will see what happens. Just really disappointed, over effectively an argument over the cost of a wheel alignment.

I have never seen tyre separation like that. I might suggest you get the tyre manufacturer factory rep to have a look at it, as they know tyres and how that separation has occurred. Your Audi dealership mechanic will not have a clue as to the cause of the damage. That tyre may have have been driven with a puncture and low pressure for several miles, or a leaking tyre valve and damaged the tyre prior to repair. There could be many reasons for that damage and your wheel alignment was not much off spec and I assume they checked the suspension for any faults.

I will see if Pirelli are interested.

They haven't checked anything yet have got caught up on the fact that they wanted to charge me for a wheel alignment convinced that it is my problem. Before even looking at anything. Let me drive away with a potentially dangerous fault. Audi UK have just fobbed me off too, furious really.

No leaky valve pressures checked regularly, no punctures or repairs.

I'm seeing this more and more. Customer service wise. I've said before there needs to be far more involvement from Audi U.K. More regulation as the franchises are a bunch of cowboys. I remember dealers going the extra mile in my region. It changed about 2015 time.

It's all PCP now. Like a phone contract. Get the new deal sorted, screw the used car customer. Just bought my 64 plate RS4 2 months ago. Got winter tyres fitted today and the quality of the 'wheel refurbishment' was utterly unacceptable. Blistering and oxidisation throughout every wheel. The rear drivers side has started chip/flek. Inside the summer tyres, each tyre was littered with spray marks from where the wet paint/coating came off inside. Didn't even wait til it dried! And they only refinished the face and inside cuff.

I've planned to use these as winter wheels anyway but it's not the point. I've simply noticed a blinkered focus on new car sales only. Remember when Contract phone customers were getting screwed for a while? PAYG deals and sim only were getting all the attention.

I'm pretty snapped tbh. As I imagine you are. There just doesn't seem to be a change on the horizon. I don't even see the point in a warranty if I'm being honest. Not used anyway. It's an Audi insurance policy. Not warranty. They can decline to replace any part. I really want to find a solid S/RS Specialist in Yorkshire. Just...a bunch of decent, well trained mechanics/techs That love their job. Haha.

Rant over. I'll defo keep an eye on this thread.

I have just come off the phone from Audi UK again. I was basically told the only person who may offer you help is the original dealer (They will have no interest as they lied to me at the point of purchase and are located to far away to make any service income off of me). Just had a load of contradictions spewed done the phone at me and the same robot phrases repeated again and again. Audi UK themselves don't seem to care or seem to be interested in the behaviour of their franchises, I am actually astounded that they are not interested in a potential safety issue with their car or tyres that they are supplying .

This is the troubling disjoint I'm talking about. Audi UK are a sales entity and a marketing machine.

Sorry see what your saying

Yes I did buy used but part of the sale was that the car was fully serviced and tracking oil change everything was done . So when I started looking after the car I knew it was all perfect to begin with and I could maintain it to my standard. It took me 3 weeks to get out of them that they lied and had not completed a full service and they paid in full to have it done at another dealer ! So basically lied to since day one !

I wanted to buy a new car but could not get what I wanted within a sensible timeframe so bought used approved be assured that the car was of the highest standard.

Be interested in the outcome of that. Slightly off topic but I've just swapped to Toyo Winters and the car genuinely feels better than the summer pirellis. Go figure...

Looking forward to see how the cross climates perform in a British Winter. Used to run Continental Sport contacts and Nokian winter tyres on my old SAABS . Not sure what to get for the summer next year the tyres it came with were eco tyres and not quite sticky enough for the instant torque of the electric motor, still need to source the rims anyway have missed out on 3 sets by hours.....

Nokians are fantastic in winter. Had them on my B9 S4. Can't find them for these big old wheels haha. Same as cross climates probably. Probably go Michelin for summers after the Pirellis ultimately grind down to the bone! Haha. Hope ya get some feedback from them.

That is a fair comment for compensation as that is who you purchased the car from. Again, was the car purchased new or used from the dealer, as the previous owner may have damaged the tyre. Tyres are warranted by the tyre manufacturer not the car manufacturer. You are on a bit of a sticky wicket as to who is at fault here...tyre manufacturer....Audi for a mechanical issue not caused by the owner....owner abuse/neglect/etc.

My point here really is that for an alignment and check of my suspension I would have walked away a happy customer... simple cheap customer service and the dealer in Bedford would have a new customer.... instead they argued for hours between them selves . If I was Audi UK I would have just picked up the charge and kept the first time new customer sweet .....

More importantly Audi has not checked my car yet to see if there actually is a fault !

Not to be rude. Why should Audi pick up the charge for an owner possibly causing the issue. Did you purchase this car new or used? An argument takes two to tango and you sound not happy with any responses you have received so far as to what may have caused the issue...get Pirelli involved.

Honestly. If you're buying a car from Audi, it goes through a massive multi-point check. It's issued a warranty and Audi trade off this 'reputation'

'If' there was an issue with the car and it was sold knowingly or even unknowingly with a substantial fault like this, it's simply Audis problem. Otherwise, what separates them from a buchshee back alley used dealer? You can't tout your awesome thoroughness and peace of mind service then simply not give a toss. They charge a premium compared to other non franchise dealers and besides...haha. You're not buying private. You're buying from a huge company that is responsible for the product it sells. Regardless of whose fault it was. It probably was the previous owner. So what. Audi but the car and it then becomes their responsibility.

My gearbox cover tray thing fell off last week whilst driving. I'm not going to blame the previous owner. I'm not going to blame anyone. But Audi won't even order the part in (costs £75 for Petes sake!) to simply pop it on for me. They want the car for the whole day (only Mon-Thur and guess what most people do Mon-Thur?!) just to check there's no further damage. No, they want the car to find the tiniest reason to refuse under warranty. I'm gonna buy the part off of Crewe Audi (very good after sales on here) and fit the ****** thing myself. Why? Because Audi are just becoming unbearable and I'm seeing it more and more on here.

Long story short, the OP bought a car that is sold as a thoroughly checked and warranty backed vehicle. Obviously they didn't do a good job in that respect. Fact.

Unfortunately there is no way of know what happened so from a business point of view it is better to give the customer the benefit of the doubt especially since all they are asking for is a 4 wheel alignment ! I do know that the original dealer lied to me about what they had done as far as the servicing was concerned. I have never had a car wear tyres in this way before and it seems there are quite a few threads and people who have had similar problems.

What is more important is the issue was caught before I had a blowout and a serious accident if nothing else this should warn people about potential issues with the tyre wear on these cars !

Sorry, I disagree. Yes, any issues under the SPECIFIED items for warranty for used or new cars is covered by the Audi warranty. The goodwill factor comes from the selling dealer for dubious items and customer loyalty between the dealer and customer....that is strictly a business decision for the dealer, repeat customer, client attitude, etc.
I would want the dealer to check for any further damage from the gearbox cover falling off, as that should not happen and is a warranty item. I imagine the reason they want to inspect is to unsure that there will not be another costly claim down the road due to another part being damaged. That is just good business sense and peace of mind for you.

We/you can rant and rave all you like about who’s responsible it WONT make the slightest bit of difference. Does anyone think that Audi will take responsibility for some tyres that have covered over 20,000 miles? If anyone does then a quick reality check is needed. Even Pirelli won’t give a stuff.

Mate I’d save yourself a sh!t load of grief and get your car checked out, fit another set of tyres (once spring is here) and keep an eye on the wear.

Before anyone does what they usually do on here and comes at me I’d be as p!ssed off as the OP, but going into battle with Audi or Pirelli won’t change sh!t. Neither will give a monkeys that your tyres have worn the way they have. That’s a fact. Can you prove that it wasn’t your driving style (because I’m guessing that what they’ll ask). Can you prove that you DIDNT buy the car with the tyre wear in that condition?

Some battles are worth fighting and some aren’t. Simple as that.

Get what your saying ... but maybe I am nieve in expecting better customer service from a company like Audi . I am certainly learning about the way they structure their their company and dealers as far as responsibility and customer service is concerned , this whole experience will influence where my car goes for service now unfortunately I may if backed myself into a corner with indipendents that can deal with an e-tron Maybe I just need to build a relationship with a dealer that has interest in its customers and is not just short sighted to only see the immediate cost and profit ..... and that I can trust not to lie to me !

I passed on the info to Pirelli on the off chance there may be an issue with the tyres . They were very helpful and interested in seeing photos .

If that had happened in like 2000miles from new you have a much better case for some form of warranty or them making a better effort at investigation.
Like everyone said it’s a battle you are unlikely to win. Looking at the other thread with the a4 it’s not restricted to just the a3 so all we can do is make sure it’s public in these forums and people are aware of a potential ticking time bomb.
Thing is even with the geometry check looking ok it could still be a bush or arm that’s broken/perished and only knocks it out when under load. Geometry checks are done when stationery and only tells half the story so you don’t see what it’s like when it’s moving/under load as that’s when the damage will occur as dodgy bushes will look fine when not moving but be completely out of shape when under load.
Not much help other than keep an eye on it.

Audi or Pirelli won’t change sh!t. Neither will give a monkeys that your tyres have worn the way they have.

Pirelli will be concerned as that is not wear, that is separation of the tyre carcass and more than likely caused by heat due to under inflation, or a manufacturing defect and that would concern them, or?. That is why they have asked for photos and possibly evaluation by a Pirelli tech.

If the geometry isn't out it could be an incredibly badly worn ball joint or suspension bush but you'd probably be able to feel it and experience some strange handling characteristics. Did the tyre fitting place check under the car as well as just producing a computer readout? Car up on the ramp? Wheels side to side? Give everything a good tug to see if anything was loose or worn?
You have new tyres fitted and if something is way out the edges will be feathering after a short time.

Didn’t get that far with the dealer today was there 2hrs and they didn’t even do the warranty checks just got stuck on who was going to pay for the potentially need alignment !

That is the bit I am concerned about the fact that the tracking is nearly bang on the tyres are still legal and this has happened and the car seems to drive fine ....

Get that mate BUT they aren’t likely to admit fault and cough up for a new set of tyres.....are they.

Asking for photos is probably just lip service, to give the impression that they actually care.

Audi won’t admit liability and neither will Pirelli.

Out of curiosity do you have the alloy/wheel insurance? That might cover it. Although appreciate its probably still the same issue of proving it's not just wear and year and you want to understand what's actually happened.
Guess I'm lucky that my local dealer is decent to deal with and have a great independent (VAG / Audi sport specialist) a mile away too.

Get a 4 wheel alignment done at a specialist. They should also check the suspension is in good condition.
Got my Skoda VRS done recently after an accident (after repair) and the guy even measured everything and discovered a bent strut. He did a report and insurance then got me a full new H+R Cup Kit fitted.

Pirelli are interested in them enough that they have asked that I return them to them !

Result.

However, unless they find something wrong with the tyres you still might end up back at square one. Tyres just don’t wear like that because the actual tyres are faulty, that wear pattern has something to do with the set up of your car.

Hey I’m no expert and I’m just basing it on common sense.
