Hi Guys, I'm hoping for a little confirmation/help/ideas/information here.
I've got a Mk2 2013 TT TDi, and my ESC warning light has come on, on the dash. There is also a written message warning to check the owners manual on the centre section of the dash in between the Rev counter and Speedo.
My mate plugged in his scanner with the intention of just clearing the light and it wouldn't clear at all, it was a case of no communication he said, it came up with this code :-
01324 -100, 01/01, CAN BUS
Control Module for All Wheel Drive (J492)
sporadic 004-No.
From my reading and research this suggests that the ECU for the Haldex system has went awol, apparently usually caused by corrosion on the main board, or an earthing fault in the loom or plug pins again caused by corrosion.
A colleague at work suggested doing the Haldex oil and filter change as a starting point and then replace as necessay, if that doesn't cure the problem.
Personally I don't think that this will do anything other than freshen up the Haldex oil, and I suspect it will still not work, I'm of a mind to replace the ECU, the Pump (which are known to self destruct around 60-80k apparently, due to lack of or, purely incorrect servicing, my car is at 72k so, you see where I'm going with that) and also renew the filter, basically covering all bases.
The only thing that isn't accounted for in all that is that, is the earthing fault which can cause the four wheel drive system to stop working too. The joys of motoring eh?
My inclination is to start with the wiring, to rule out the earth fault, then move on to the ECU, do an oil and filter change, and then change the pump for reasons previously stated, the parts alone will come in around £500 which, as I intend to keep the car for several years, doesn't seem to bad. The existing parts have all lasted almost ten years and if the new stuff lasts the same again it'll see me out, lol.
I'll need to get the garage to do the work though mainly due to the fact that when it comes to anything "leccy" I'm about as much use as a chocolate fire guard.
So, any thoughts, ideas and or suggestions of the way to go forward, or if you concur with my logic, please feel free to voice your opinion.
Thanks very much!

I would probably get an indy specialist who have the advanced kit plus lots of experience to look at it, such as Deutschtek just off Charing Cross or A for Audi in Clydebank, unless you have someone more local you use?

I hate it when a big bill comes up for a car. I still can't figure out why because if it's for the house or something I don't really bother, but for some reason when it's the car it annoys me. Maybe it's because I feel like I've already spent a lot buying the thing then surely I can expect it to not cause further expense or maybe I just dislike spending money on something which depreciates lol. Although, when you think about leasing a decent car then £500 can be just one month payment! That usually helps make it easier to swallow for me! haha

I know the guys at A4 Audi, I used to work for TPS Glasgow and Andy the owner at A4 Audi was a major customer, that was about 10-11 years ago.

The problem I have, is getting the car there, as they only work Mon-Fri, same as me, :disappointed: it's a 60 mile round trip for me and Mrs Jimbo is not exactly forthcoming in the assistance department when it comes to my car. It's hard enough getting her to drive 20 miles for my benefit never mind sixty.

Deutschtek would fall into the same category sadly.

The chap I usually use for stuff I can't do myself, for whatever reason, (special tools, ramps, whatever), can't do the car for another week, he's so busy. :sorrow:
Ach well, if it's one thing I've learned it's patience.

Big bills don't bother me much, particularly when I've good intention to keep the car, the only time that they do is when they fall in just before a holiday (a driving holiday), which, has happened more than a couple of times over the years, much to Swmbo's chagrine.

It looks like I'll be going to my usual suspect, I mean mechanic, he's good right across the automotive range and, quite reasonable too. Most importantly he's only ten miles away, opens on Saturdays too and is usually there until 6.00p.m. most nights. :grinning::grinning:

I'll update this post when I can.

Unfortunately they are a, one hundred and thirty mile round trip away, so not really viable for me which is a bit of a shame.

Wee update :-
Ok, so I got the car into my local guy and the diagnostic was started.
One of the things I like about these guys is that they're thorough, I told them what had happened and all that I had done, experienced and researched on t'internet and off they went.
I had supplied every seal, gasket and a Haldex filter kit, so that they could open the system up if they needed to without worrying about resealing, or, having to use old seals. I had decided to wait for the diagnostic report before ordering the expensive parts, i.e. the ECU and the pump. No point throwing money away unnecessarily eh?
They whipped out the seats and checked all the wiring on the floor of the car just incase I'd nipped something and caused a short when I'd swopped my seat set over, as there was a fuse blown, hence the no communication message on the little magic box. :notworking:
They checked the wiring and plug between the Haldex pump and ECU, all appeared to be fine there too. (As I said thorough)
They then opened up and checked the ECU and found a little bit of corrosion but, not so bad that they thought it would or, should prevent function. :chargrined::chargrined:
So, they then decided to replace the fuse again and see if they could spot what/where the issue was, but no joy there, another (same) blown fuse.
Then the decision was taken to remove the ECU from the circuit and replace the fuse and see what happened.
Bingo!
The fuse remained intact so, by process of ellimination the ECU is the No.1 suspect to be the culprit. It was just shear coincidence that the warning light came on while I was doing the seat swop after all.
Unfortunately the supplier, Auto Fault Finder (good service from these guys) is closed Saturday and Sunday and the fault had only been diagnosed late on Friday afternoon, well past his cut off time for next day service.
Oh well, Tuesday it is then, for the earliest possible delivery.
As the garage have the new Haldex filter kit already, as soon as they've got the warning light out, with the new ECU fitted, I'll get them to do the filter and oil at the same time and hopefully that'll be it for the next 20k miles.
Next update on Tuesday night all being well. :thumbs up:

Final update :-
Well the new ECU didn't arrive until Wednesday, mainly due to Matt being so busy he just couldn't get through all the work he has.
Typically due to the domino effect of the part arriving late it was fitted on the Thursday, the ESC light went out immediately and the fuse stayed in one piece. Hurray!!! Fully functional AWD is re-enabled, thank f... goodness, lol.
I am a happy chappie once again and the TT's now going around wet round abouts without any drama.:hearteyes::smile new:
