Sat Nav

When I ordered the A3 I didn't add the Sat Nav option which was a bit of an oversight. I contacted Newbury Audi to see if it could be added afterwards which they confirmed it could. It's all ready to use you just need the SD Card with the data I believe. They want £495 for it. When I asked for a deal they advised that this is the factory price and can't be changed. Anyone know if this is correct or had a better deal anywhere else?

£495 is the standard option price if you spec it from new, so I think they may be right there. You might be able to get a third party to fit you one cheaper but I wouldn't hold much hope on dealers going lower.

I have a spare genuine Audi Sat Nav SD card that I acquired but I believe it also needs a license and I don't know anything about that.

After years of a stupid Tom Tom falling off the window in my old car, I love the integrated Sat Nav in my A3. It works seamlessly and would be on my list of options if I spec'd a new A3. £495 sounds a lot, but you will probably recover some of that in additional resale value. IMHO it is worth the investment.

I think the Sat Nav needs activating in the MMI, so just getting hold of a pre-loaded SD card probably will not help much.

My main problem with the Audi Sat/Nav, apart from the price, is that you cannot add your own POI's to the database. This means I would not be able to add the Personal GPS World Speed Camera database for which I have a free lifetime subscription. I also have quite a number of other POIs loaded which are so simple to download and install from the PGPSW website. The other thing is I have my existing TomTom mounted at eye-level at the right-hand end of my screen which, as I'm right-handed, makes entry of a location or changing a setting very easy. I take the unit out of it's windscreen mount about every two weeks to update the various databases using my desktop computer and the mount has never fallen off the screen. The power for the TomTom comes from the fuse box at the right-hand end of the dashboard on my 8P and the wire runs up inside the door rubber and is only visible for the last 50mm. This will be a little more involved with the 8V as the fuse box is now behind the glovebox but I have seen a thread on the GTI Forum of how to get the wire to the right-hand side of the screen.

I accept that a lot of members like the built-in Sat/Nav but it's something I will not be adding to my order.

I am sure that I have read that you can use the MyAudi website to upload your own POI files and these will be converted into a metadata file which can be uploaded to the MMI satnav either by connect or sdcard. There is (I think) a limit of 55 files, so the PGPSW zoned files may turn out to be too many, but the consolidated file should be OK. The only drawback that I can see is that you may not be able to get audio warnings.

Haven`t got mine yet, so can't confirm this,but I will be having a play with this once I have VIN, which is needed to register with the website.
Not the most convenient way of loading your own files, but it doesn't seem to be impossible (Which it is with Navigon)

Good points, about the POI features, which I have used on the Tom Tom myself. Particularly useful for finding off-the-beaten-track places. We have one set for a nearby hard to find hilltop walking spot. I haven't tried the Speed Camera subscription yet.

I think they improved the mounts on more recent Tom tom's; mine is an old Tom Tom One which has an appalling touch screen that barely works and a incessant habit of falling off the screen every ten miles! Alcohol sprayed on the window and the suction cap can help a bit.

It also amuses me the way it sometimes turns itself on, all by itself, whilst inside my desk after not being used for days and says 'you have reached your destination' lol. It seems I am not alone with this bizarre trait as it shows up when you Google the problem.

Sounds like you have much better experiences with yours and that it is much better suited to your usage. It makes total sense to save your money in those circumstances!

I never liked screen mounted satnavs, I currently have a vent mount for my phone which does just fine, the back of the phone gets a bit warm as I never remember to turn the vent off though. New car is specced with built-in satnav.

I know. Sometimes I think they forget customers know its not hard to programme a satnav to work. But thats why I have screen mounted tomtom. Cheaper and better (other than being integrated into the car)

Is there any update with regards to activation codes from dealers, prices or fixes
