S5 Exhaust Valve Mod

I fitted a Milltek catback non-res a good few months back (£1600 fitted) and am very impressed with it both looks wise and sound. Still uses the valves so not too far from stock sound when in normal modes but really wakes up when in dynamic sport.
Am tempted to get the Bluetooth adapter but its one more thing I shouldnt be buying!!

How you liking Daytona? I had a Navarra Blue one first and that colour still edges it for me but the Daytona really pops in the sun.

Yep... Was going for Black but on the day i choose the colour it was sunny and there was a Black sportback in the showroom which looked ok but a Daytona grey A7 and looked great.... Had to wait 3 months then though, Black was in stock!

Revamping this. Had an issue. I thought I would...

Got some unrelated faults that needed looking at. And I'm gonna part Ex for an RS4. So, I go to pop my plugs back in. Passenger side...plonk. Job done. Just easy as it came out. Drivers side...nada. Not playing. We tried everything. Jacked it up the lot.

So wasn't gonna take in to Audi as it's not my purchasing dealer and they're renowned for cutting your warranty for the slightest thing. These unrelated faults would become 'related' if you get me. So! Took to a trusted local garage and it's snapped. The connector that is. I'll be honest, after the man-handling through utter frustration that we gave it last week, it was a bit bent. Lesson learned for sure. Just want to move past it.

Garage are trying to source a replacement. Will this be costly and where can 'I' get one if the garage charge too much? Also...do we know where the other end of this connector goes? Is it in the boot near the space saver? Obviously I'd have disconnected that 2 years ago if I knew there was one in there.

Ugh. Don't fettle if you don't know what you're doing haha.

Not sure how you change those or what the damage is, if its just the outside shell you can probably do it yourself, shouldn't be a big job though.

Nah. It's the actual male connection inside the shell that's snapped off.

Ah, thats gonna be a PITA then, that part was for the connector on the cable, the connector on the motor is not listed as a part, the part number for the motor was on the screenshot though, try it on ebay or ebay.de

Hmmmm.

I'll try to explain better. The female connection is on the valve control unit that sits just in front/on top of the rear muffler (drivers side). The connection and housing in that seem fine.

The lead that comes down from (I'm just guessing) under the boot behind the rear bumper and connects into the valve control unit. That's the connector that is snapped.

But the housing is fine. I think that might be the female end then if we're talking about the pins.

I seen where the housing could be clipped open with a fine flathead or something. But I didn't want to ****** about any further. Found a good Audi specialist nearby that could fit the part for me.

Put the snapped off piece into the connector and leave it dangling. Turn up at your local dealer with a confused expression on your face and a vague story about how the exhaust doesn’t seem to be sounding the way it previously did.

Sit back and watch as they identify a faulty connector and replace under warranty.

Job done.

Sorry to add a stupid question on here. I bought my 2008 S5 (b8) a week ago and I am struggling to find these vacuum tubes to disconnect to keep the valves open!

I have a stock exhaust and I just cant find them, does anyone have any pics to hand that would help or even just a little advice on exactly where they are. everything I find online is for the RS5 and I just can't seem to see them in the same place on my S5. I have been told at the back next to where the exhaust pipes terminate but just cannot see them, it's probably just me being blind though!

Thanks for the help and reply. I will take another look where that images suggests they are, I just assumed as mine woundn't have the digital/electrical connecters it wouldn't be the same as that image. I will persevere and try again!

Just done this mod. Bought the AWE exhaust valve simulators as I can’t be dealing with any fault codes wether they’re soft codes or not. When it goes in to the dealer there’ll be no faults shown.

Anyway, as others have said it’s well worth doing. Kinda reminds you you’re in a performance car without droning you to deaf. Not told the Mrs yet and it’s her car really so I’ll check in when she notices or doesn’t notice!

Well I bought them believing they’d do what they’re supposed to. I’ve not got any of these apps people have to check if it’s logged but the ignition was off when fitted so it shouldn’t have done.

I was a bit miffed too because while I knew what do do from reading off of here, there were no instructions in the box. Would’ve been nice to have something from AWE to say “this is how you’re supposed to do it”

And it would be better if it was double sided. By this I mean the plug should have a male and a female blank side so you don’t have to tie the cable out the way or tape over the open valve socket.

As it was I couldn’t get the tape to stick so ended up stuffing electrical tape into the socket until I was happy no crap or water could get in there.

Just my 2p. Oh and took about three weeks to come. AWE don’t stock it apparently and get each order from the US.

Ok, so I’ve been running with the valves unplugged for a week but my ocd has been wanting to plug them back in..

Today I’ve been running live data logs from odb eleven to see what the valves get upto when plugged in.

In Eco, Comfort and Auto all in Drive or Sport they are fully variable (all open to valve 1 and or 2 closed) dependant on throttle load, closed ( lists at 90%) to open (10%) don’t know what the percentages relate to but at ignition off they read 35%.. the road speed has no relation to their status, it’s load based..

Anyway, under Dynamic and Individual (exhaust set to sport) they are also fully variable unless in Sport on gearbox, then they are always open ...

ok so some will already know that... here is the interesting bit, if you toggle to dynamic or individual after the engine has started, the valves will remain fully open all of the time until the engine is next switched off, this includes the standard drive setting on the gearbox. It reverts back after next restart, but toggling enables again.

For some this may be preferable to removing the plugs.

If you meet up have a listen from inside but also recommend standing on side of road and hear a drive by. Be warned though you will end up getting one!

I have also noticed this, i simply start car, put in dynamic for minute or so then back to eco or individual with gearbox in ‘d’ mode, sounds same and easier gear changes as opposed to ‘s’ mode long ratios.

On switch off and restart above needs to be done again.

You will also notice sound if on idle with d mode, then flick gear lever in s mode - you can hear the deeper drone and revs rise slightly
