So, i just picked up a new S4 bumper - the part between the exhausts - as OEM is that just left the grey of the bumper or is it painted?

Cheers!

Not sure if the grey needs painting the correct shade as it may just be in primer and that will not weather well if just left like that but could be wrong as it's been a long time since I've had to paint a new rear bumper for one

The part numbers can tell you if it has been painted. The valance for my cab (well, for a s4 b7 cab) is 8H0807521F1FRR - the FRR being the painted grey, I believe.

There is no valance - it's all part of the bumper - ending GRU - primer essentiallY!

Yeah, the cab (and b7s) have part numbers for the valance. The b6 saloon and avant are one piece.

As you have mentioned, I've found this.

"The GRU is the colour code. In this example GRU denotes 'primed' so the bumper is supplied primed."
