S4 oil consumption after service

Hi Guys, I wanted to pick your brains on S4 oil consumption. I know there are many threads on the 2.0.

I just find this rather odd.

I had my car serviced on May 8th. It has both Inspection and oil service at once (only 2k miles apart). Now i have covered just over 1200 miles since and the oil level on the MMI is showing as low.

Now I know that these cars drink oil like water and I carry a 5l castrol edge oil can in the boot. :) However this doesn't make sense.

The last time it was that low on the display, withing another 300 miles the oil light came on telling me to add 1l of oil. Surely after being serviced the level shouldn't drop that fast.

I have it booked in on the 24th to go back in and they are going to weigh the oil etc and check consumption but has anyone seen this before?

From reading other oil relates posts - most people seem to ignore the MMi oil display and invested in a good old fashioned
dip stick from the dealers (dont think they are expensive)

Cant comment on the dealers consumption checks sorry, but will be interested to hear how you get on

This is what I have been reading. However i have not been able to buy one. I even asked the master tech and he said they don't do one for the S4 and you can get it for most other B8's!

They are going to drain the oil. Fill the car up again and drain it again and weigh the oil. After that i have to drive 500 miles they will then drain and weigh the oil again. Once that has been done they will see if there are consumption issues.

It just seems odd. I can tell you that in the space one 1 year and 10k miles i had to put in an extra 4L off oil. I was told this is perfectly normal. However the fact the oil level has dropped does not make any sense. Hence the tests they are going to run.
 
Keep us posted as this will be useful information. I've only done 175 miles in my S4 so no change in oil level yet (unsurprisingly).
 
Regarding a dipstick for the S4, after looking around I believe the A6 3.0T dipstick is the correct part - 06E115611H. Although I did also ask my local Audi parts department who said a dipstick for the S4 doesn't exist. I have a thread in the parts section, Stoke Audi have given me a cost of £13.13 delivered, but haven't yet come back to me on how I can order it. If it works ok i'll let you know as I also don't trust the MMI.

are you sure they filled it on the service ?

I had an oil service and an inspection service. I will need to check my paper work when i get home to see how much oil they put in.

That would be really helpful. I really don't like using the MMI for this
 
last time I used audi for a service in a B6 s4

I pulled out the dealers and about 5 mins later the oil low light came on.
pulled over it was low went straight back to the dealers told them they said they would check it out could be a sensor etc.
bloke came out checked on dip stick and he added 2 ltr and said sorry the lad that filled it wrong and didn't add enough paper work said the right amount.

Maybe it is just that. It is going back in on Tuesday so fingers crossed that's all it is.
 
I've done about 800 miles now and have not used any oil - would be interested in a dipstick though?
 
the more i think about it the more i think they have not put in enough oil.
 
I still think it is weird not having a dipstick- you can tell a lot from how the oil looks and as it is the most important consumable I am not that keen on a seemingly inaccurate sensor.
 
I had the oil level switch replaced on mine. It was half the price of Audi using a local Audi specialist. Pity it didn't resolve the real problem with my car!
 
The other thing is have you opened and closed your bonnet because that resets the computer.

Agreed that does reset the computer but the car measures the oil level again. I have done this already. same result after the display said wait 2 mins etc
 
OK so i checked details on my service paperwork. So as it was under the service plan there was not an itemized break down. Just a check list that they used. It shows oil filter change and oil replenished 6.2 liters. That really doesn't sound enough to me. Will see what they say.

when ever iv topped up or had bonnet open it takes around 45/50 mile so display the level again

but if it takes 6.2 and it says 6.2
how do you know they didn't put 4.2 in by mistake ?

For reference, I've driven 1000miles since my service and the MMI is showing a shave off the MAX line. When I got home from the dealer, waited 2min and checked the level and it was full. So have used a tiny bit in 1k miles.

This is it i have no idea if they have put in 6.2 or even 2.2! lol will find out on Tuesday.

I could drive for 5-10 mins and come back and start the car again and the oil level comes up on mine. Never had to do 40/50 miles. Lets see what they car comes back if it takes that long. I know last time i didn't have to drive it after the service to see it as it has some issues with tyres and balancing so after the service they has the car out on a test drive so that updated the MMI by the time i picked it up. Again they only go about 10 min drive up the A12 and it is about 6 miles.

It is interesting that different peoples MMI takes longer than others to update the oil details.

@Scotty - agreed shouldn't trust the manual - it's very hit and miss. Some things are very clear like this should be your Tyre pressure. then you have the oil statement.

This makes me think that they really didn't top the oil up correctly. This is not the first time. When i got the car it had just been serviced - different dealer. They delivered it to me. When we checked the MMI for oil it had no reading. The bar was blank. It had been driven 300 miles to get to me. Now there is no way the car would used 6.2l of oil in that time. lol

So i went with the delivery driver to got some more oil. we put in 1l and drive for about 10 mins then the MMI registered about 10% oil. They arranged for car to be collected by local dealer and they checked the oil the following day and had to put 4 liters in!

When they drain it on tuesday will be interesting to see how much is actually in there. As the car is under warranty for about another 2 weeks. The service guy said to get the oil consumption checked as it would be silly not to in case there was a problem which has not been noticed.
 
Just a comment to ease some people's concerns, I have a February 2011 S4 with Man Trans, currently its mileage is 15.5K (!!) miles, I have had it for 11 months and used it for roughly 3.0K miles, it was serviced by dealer just prior to going on sale, and so far it has not used much if any oil - none added, but oil carried at all times! I bought an oil dip stick prior to collecting the car and that ties up with the MMI indicator - which I don't check very often, the MMI indicator that is!

I hope that makes some people feel a bit better!

lol it makes me more concerned that my car is using more oil. lol I did do 10k miles last year and had to put in 4L top up during that time.

Is the dip stick you bought the same as the part number above? if so i will order if for my car do i can keep a check on it. cheers
 
AFN1980, I'll get back to you about that part number, at work right now!

Any difficulty people are having getting Audi dealer to order these dip sticks will be due entirely to the dealer not wanting to order in something that was not fitted to the car during build, or not officially suitable/needed on that car. When I ordered mine in, I explained that I knew that that dip stick was not meant for that car, but I was willing to buy it in the belief that it could be used with that car.

Same reassurance here! My 2009 manual trans S4 Avant has just turned 100k miles, and is used back and forth from Scotland to central France, with minimal oil consumption..........pity I can't say the same about my petrol consumption! Must be the way I drive it!
Oh, I have a dipstick for checking oil level, which is not left in the engine.

Looks like i may have an issue then as my car really does use up oil. I cannot see any oil leaks or anything like that. Nothing in the engine bay nothing under the car. I have a DSG but I wouldn't think it would make that much of a difference. My driving is mixed between short journeys to work and then motorway use on the weekend.

Does it smoke under hard acceleration. Mine is like a diesel!

I can confirm that the dipstick that I got my Audi dealer's parts guy to order in was A06E 115 611 H price back in July 2013 was £7.13 + VAT. The "A" seems to be what Audi parts places add on to the correct VAG part number, Seat parts places add on a "S" strangely, VW don't seem to add anything on to the correct VAG part number. Getting an Audi dealer to order that in should be no problem at all, just ask and give them the number, nothing else needs to be done, they don't need to know what you are doing with it. The trouble only starts when you tell them "what it is for" and which car you are fitting it to, had this in the past with my 2000MY B5 Passat 4Motion, my first visit to an Audi parts place, VW UK advised me, while under warranty, if I was wanting to avoid "brake wash out in winter", just go to Audi and get the latest version of brake pads - told Audi parts place what I was fitting the parts to "we only sell parts to fit to Audis" - I think that I thought **ck you and walked out and phoned up Pagid UK and they supplied the pads.

Now, just a few words of warning, if you ever need to go to your Audi parts department, make sure that you have a couple of hours of your time to spare! Standard procedure at Audi Edinburgh is - very pretty and well dressed young lady will grab customer at first point of entry to showroom area, find out why they are here and direct them to the strangely shaped seats and offer them a coffee, biscuits etc, advice them that parts department have been told about their presence, wait 20>30 minutes then gets parts guy back out to his desk (but what has he been doing away from his desk?), guide introduce customer to parts guy, 20 minutes later leave having ordered/got/collected parts - well maybe not a couple of hours, but nothing like as the efficient use of YOUR valuable time as you will get at a VW proper utility style parts place! Though the latest Audi "book", which you should have got through the mail will be there.
