S4 Gearbox Malfunction + Parking brake + TCM

So, some of you will remember razzas S4 had a mechatronics and clutch packs replaced, well it seems to be having some more issues, so driving the other day on the bypass, speeds ranging from 50-70 gearbox malfunction pops up, continue driving, car doesn't act any differently, came to a stop at the bottom of the slip road, parking brake fault flags up. Loss of power. Had to turn it off and on again, got home checked the codes. Cleared them. Left the car half an hour and gone, about a week later, same happens again, on the bypass again. Town driving wasn't an issue that week however.

Ran a carista check for the faults and got this

Really hoping it's not the mechatronics again, I cant find anything on the transmission error code, really the car drives no differently when it's displayed, gets all gears, no fluctuations in revs, no early shifting. I did notice the TCM seems to be popping up a lot and not sure if that's the mechatronics or another unit, seen some day it could be a bad earth or module. I've noticed energy management active last time I ran a scan, not sure why though, couple things cross my mind.

Bad wiring to TCM.
Car hit a really bad pothole few weeks ago bending the lip on two alloys both driver side. Could it have hit something under the car?
Bad earth?
Or could it be the gearbox map I had a couple months ago with launch control put on? Which was never designed for this car.

Any help would be appreciated.
 
Well certainly it's a bus comms problem. It would appear to point to the TCM. Can't suggest much beyond that.

So does that sound like an electrical signal problem? Also is the TCM on these actually the Mechatronics or does it have a separate transmission control module?
 
So turns out the fault when run through VCDS is the Gear Lever Position Sensor..

Anyone had to fork out for that to be fixed?
 
I have read of cases of that sensor going faulty. Sorry I can't remember if anyone reported cost but it wouldn't surprise me if the labour is significant as it always seems to be where the 'box is concerned.

However that doesn't answer why there are so many bus problems.

The TCU is the transmission control unit whereas the mechatronics is a set of metal/valves/solenoids which does the gear selection.
 
This is now the only error showing on VCDS

Can you provide engine and transmision code? Just a tip, I once had on Passat broken wire from level selector switch to TCM. The cable was detaches and touching the exhaust manifold, the rest you can imagine.

audi upgrades
Any thoughts?

Driving to work and back is fine, only seems to be either 7th gear causing it or sitting at a set speed (although, i'm not sure about that as the last time it happened on the motorway I wasn't on it for very long and it was a varied speed)
 
Does the DTC clear? The fault frequency is only 1.
 
It doesn't allow us to clear it with VCDS but will clear itself if car is left for an hour or two, but i've not had the MIL come up since I posted the thread.
 
Sorry to hear you're having troubles.
The code sounds familiar though. Check the paperwork as I had a hear selector solenoid replaced on the gear lever. Vag works did it as warranty wouldn't cover it.
Think it works out the gear it's in, can lead to issues with the parking brake and the key can get locked in the slot.
Search my old threads and you may find the error codes etc.
It cost about £120 from memory (maybe less).
The part might still be under warranty...

Just bumped a thread about it, had an F305 error, but sure that P179E rings a bell.
In the end I got VAG to do it for me as didn't want to break any trim. The fact you got the parking brake fault pop up makes me think that's gone again.
Hope so as it's a fairly cheap quick fix out of all the gearbox errors that could occur....

Might take a look at least. I'll have a skim through paperwork, see if I can get a part number from that and see about any warranty.

Had a look, not in warranty but it was only 130 all in for it. Will dig more, as above its not a constant thing.

It wasn't constant for me when I had the issue. I think I had an issue where it wouldn't start as well.
It basically reads where the gear lever is through magnets I think and this solenoid can go causing the issue

Sorry my bad, not had a chance to yet, as said it's not happening daily, but still happening at random occasions, not linked to any speed/gear or distance driven.

Now that christmas is out the way if the weather is good at the weekend i'm going to get under the car and look. Was your happening daily? was it preventing you driving the car?
 
Yes it was permanent or daily issue. If you had gave me engine and transmission code before I could gave you some tips.
 
So it was in at Audi for them to take a look.

They won't touch it due to the gearbox map, apparently couldn't even confirm if it was the selector lever sensor. Said it'd need to be stock software to tell.

Considering going down to MRC, getting it put to stock so I then have more options.

Yeh, contacted Mackies up here, been recommended by a few folk.

Did your specialist diagnose and remove/fit the mechatronics at the time?

Or did you need it removed elsewhere?
 
The mech unit was replaced at Vag works with a new unit, the latter version.
That didn't fix the issue so the gearbox place took it apart and diagnosed the clutches. Not sure they would've touched the mech unit as they knew it was new

It's currently in to Mackies transmissions up in Glasgow having the Drive position sensor (i'm sure thats what he said) replaced with wiring loom, parts aint too pricey, labour is, just one of them things.
