Brand new S4 Avant has been an absolute nightmare from the start. Changing gears through 1 2 and 3 is a joke and the gearbox makes a loud thunk when put in third or fourth. Am about to reject the car as RAC (indepedently) agrees with me.

Anyone else out there having these problems as I am hearing that there are several S4 owners already in dispute over the cars that they are rejecting? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

A known issue which Audi will remedy by replacing the gearbox with an "optimised" one.

My S4 Avant gearbox was fine from new and has now done 10k miles - it did not need any loosening unlike the old V6 S4 which needed loads.

I guess this car must have a dud box like some people have reported on other cars. Ask for it to be replaced as part of the deal btu don't be put off the new S4 as the gearbox can be fine!

PS Still not many up here in Scotland.

Hard to say. For a high spec car that sort of discount is not silly and in Scotland more people might want the manual. Look at the date on the seatbelts and add two months to find out how long they have had the car.

As for dealers' having stock, Edinburgh Audi had an unsold S4 cab at launch. Remember that S range Audi's are not as sought after as M range BMW's. That's wrong in my opinion with Quattro a major USP for Audi. My Merc CLK500 cab has much worse traction than my S4 - if you ever buy a Quattro you'll never drive anything else day to day!

rocky
i bought a new met.black S4 v8 6 spd from specialist cars in abz.and have had a few minor probs, like a faulty dash to be replaced (clock /oddometer probs)
the car pulls like a train and will pass everthing but petrol pumps.
the best i have had was driving from dundee-stonehaven at 75 mph all the way, was 24 mpg, when you thrash it the milage drops to single figures, best to switch off the mpg reading and concentrate on how much further you can burble on the rest of whats left in the tank.
buy it, its awsome!

Cheers Andy/Frank

Bought it - Love it! Quattro is awesome, just exploring the differences between that and my M3. It's Nogaro Blue with silver nappa leather. Just been loading all the CD's into the front slot system - so much better than a remote disk changer! Love the red glow of the displays at night as well. Can't wait to drive it more! Mpg - gave up on that after journey 1 today!!

I'll keep an eye out for it - Nogaro Blue is a bit LOUD!

As for mpg, I reset memory 2 when I fill up and it varies from 20-23mpg between fill ups. As for memory 1 - which resets itself for each journey (after a 2hr+ stop) - I have seen 17mpg if driving hard and 27mpg on a cruise with my young son asleep! Never use the instant mpg reader as it means nothing, would prefer an average speed indicator instead.

PS If anyone has a young child, the ISOFIX Audi child seat is excellent.

MPG will improve materially with miles. Was the demo car low mileage? Also I would have thought that you would drive it more on the torque curve after you had a few weeks of redlining it!?
