S3 wheelspin

What a shitter !

If Audi advised you what part needed replacing to solve problem then surely you have some comeback on them?

I had the Haldex control unit changed on mine but think this maybe what the pump is called?
Sent them an email on the back of the email I got after service.
Asked them what procedure they used to identify the problem ad being the pump and that I paid them for service and a diagnostics to find out what was wrong with 4 wheel drive and they advised after diagnostics that it was the pump.
Told them pump changed today by a reputable tuner but I still don't have 4 wheel drive.
Asked them to advise what else it could be so I can get it sorted and that I was not happy paying over 250 quid on there advice after paying g to have problem diagnosed.
30 min later I get a call asking if I would take car in past them tomorrow and it is very strange how diagnostic said it was the pump.

I'll keep you posted..

Sounds like they could be willing to help! I didn't realise you didn't have it fitted by them though, so unsure on what they could do with regards to the £250

Yeah agree, sounds positive....

When dealer had mine in he said a technical bulletin had been issued by Audi regarding Haldex system so I'd suggest mentioning that.

Hope it gets sorted, keep us posted...

The controller is the silver box that the cable from the pump plugs into and price for that is just under 900 quid from audi.

I was quoted just over £300 for the Haldex ECU from Audi but got a used one from a later car than mine for £120 from Ebay.

The pump is just one component in a pretty complex electro hydraulic system. A lot of things must link together to turn a demand signal into a positive movement of clutch plates. Electronically there is the main power supply that feeds into the controller, as well as the canbus module that decodes the demand signals from the rest of the car (networked together with TC, ABS, EDL & ESP). Mechanically there are valves, centrifuge weights, seals, piston rings, clutch plates, and all sorts of other componentry. Unless there is pressure monitoring on the HP & LP oil sides and current monitoring on the motor drive circuit, I suspect that Audi have played the statistical likelihood game in your diagnosis... i.e. The pump fails most often, must be the pump...

Sitting in audi for past 2 hours, they have said they need to investigate further, teen a cup of oil through to show me which was the new oil I put in yesterday and said it black and had shards of mettle through it so they want to flush it. Now service was done last month including the Haldex oil change so how did they not spot oil was black and had fine shards of metal through it.
I'll update soon..

Well looks like it going to be an ouch
They now saying I need new differential so looks like the s3 will be traded in very very soon, is a shame as I do like here.

Update,
Decided I can't let her go with spec she has as would not get anything close for the money.
So now booked in for a new back end which comes with pump and controller and everything else attached which comes in at £4300 fitted but will do it for £3500 as a goodwill gesture fitted.

Am I doing the rite thing spending this amount on a 2007 s3 with 100000 on the clock?
Spent this year's so far
Sach organic clutch/flywheel 1100 fitted
New miltek downpipe 680
HR springs 180 I think
2 front wheel bearings 125 or 145 each
2 new headlight leveling switches 120 odd each
And some other odds and sods :-(

I'd be thinking very hard about spending that much, but given what you have spent to date I can understand your reasoning.

Personally I'd look on eBay or try and source what you need from a written off car before paying new part prices from Audi and maybe get an independent VAG specialist to do the work.

Didn't realise you had an 8P not an 8V

That is a lot of money to spend, but as said above, somewhat justified as you've spent a lot on it this year already which would be a shame to lose

eBay / breakers.

Fit the differential yourself, plug in existing controller card, and enjoy once more.

In this case metal in the system is a huge indication to say that the pump has failed.
and even if the tinniest spec of metal gets in, it can totally reak havoc on the rest of the components.

Sounds possibly like the pump has failed and metal has got pushed around into the control block/valves and system.

The pump has been replaced, but the system may have not been flushed greatly (ALTHOUGH flushing a system is not a guarantee that it will completely remove contamination)

This has probably caused other parts to be damaged (particularly the valve block) which controls the mechanical connections to engage the AWD
Hence why their is crap in the new oil and you still dont have AWD.

Electrical failures should show up in the diagnostics, I would doubt it was the ecu as that usually causes intermittent issues.

A friend had a very similar issue on his A3 quattro, he ended up replacing the pump and valve block which cured it.

But replacing the whole back end should obviously correct all the issues....

If shes your baby .... shes worth it!

So update on yesterday's fun.

Called the dealership at 9am and as you'd expect they were booked up for the next couple of weeks so put me through to road side assist. They sent a guy over.

10am, guy arrived and firstly informed me that the S3 was prodomenently front wheel drive... yeah I know whatever but after checking the diog it showed that it was recording a intermittent fault on the Haldex pump since Feb. So yes needed to go into the dealers and was asked to give them a call again and confirm I had been referred. Interesting part was he didn't want to tow me as it's Quattro so said I should drive myself.

10:30am, called the dealers who were happy but needed to find a replacement car so would call me back.

12:00, got bored and called them to chase.

12:30, Head of service called me and said he didn't want me to drive he would arrange a truck to come and carry the car in to prevent further damage as he had fixed another like this before and didn't want to damage the car further!

So that afternoon I was low loaded into Northampton and given a supremely average a3 tdi, but the S3 is in good hands.

Will await the call over the next few days but you guys nailed the problem as always. Just hope anyone else that started to have this issue picks it up as quickly.

Hope all gets sorted mate, keep us posted. Just annoys me how many Haldex pump issues folks have had, definitely the Achilles heel to our pride and joys..

Just an update call from the dealer that they are sure it's the heldex pump, interestingly Audi do a kit now for the dealers to replace this. Kinda proves it's common.

Oh well going to see how many miles I can put on the tdi over the weekend. ETA of my car looks like Tuesday.

So got the car back, new haldex pump all installed and it feels like new again. Good service from Northampton Audi. Driving the TdI for a weekend really makes you appreciate the S3.

soooo was hoping i would never have to comment on this thread again.......

Dec 2016 @ 27k miles - new Haldex pump fitted under warranty after cars started to front end wheelspin in dry.

its now June 2019, car done approx 50k miles and has now started the dread front end wheelspin in the dry !

Why oh why is this such a weakpoint on the 8V??

Dealer contacted awaiting, reply......................

That's really poor – did the dealership do a software update in relation to your new Haldex pump? I'm worried about my newly replaced Haldex pump (changed @7,000 miles) doing the same, although I haven't driven as many miles as you and mine is a 2017 FL model.

Very similar situation for me.

@25k KM - noticed front wheelspin, never fixed until about 30k KM.

Now at 70k KM - front wheelspin again in the dry.

I am seriously considering upgrading to the A4/A5 to avoid this stupid haldex unreliability issue.

So update.....

Car in dealers, can’t find any fault..... took tech out for a spin, started off saying maybe cause of wet weather but after 30 seconds he agreed with me, something isn’t right.

TC cutting in constantly from rolling start and during launch control, front just lit up, spinning.

It’s like no power to rear, EXACTLY same symptoms as previous when Haldex pump was replaced.

See what they update me with tommorrow

Soooooo no had call saying master tech thinks nothing’s wrong! ***!

Offered to change Haldex oil, of course for £99 but now puts it down to wet weather and me driving it hard.

Gutted, I’m an Audi fan but this has left me very ****** but more importantly disheartened with the brand.
