    Hi guys,

just seen this on Facebook, they broke in, stole keys for a van and the S3, then smashed the S3 into a lamp post and three other cars on Southport road, Liverpool.

Any information, please contact Liverpool Police.

I don’t think it would work, you’ve seen how ***** they are in Traffic Cops / Police Interceptors even after they have been caught. They think they can outrun the police, it amazes me however that they manage to wrap them up in a matter of minutes, how hard do they drive them?!

Another sad story, trying to ignore.

Trying to convince myself that this is no more common than the theft of other hot hatches, M140's, Golf R's, A45's... perhaps it just feels like we are all at risk because we are all on here, if I hadn't joined this forum car security would never have concerned me...

I wonder if RS3's are just as bad or there just aren't as many of them around?

Partly I would imagine this to be the case. I bet on the Golf R forums etc, it's just as bad. I know when I had my Focus ST, they were always getting nicked. However, in recent crime surveys, the S3 is the No1 stolen car in the UK...

S3 the most stolen car in the Uk, that's not good news. I was considering getting a CAT 5 tracker installed but don't really now how good they are if i wasn't home / reachable if it was taken. Do you know of any other options for additional security?

How accurate that survey is, I don't know. Anyway, short of getting things like a ghost, wheel lock etc, I don't know what else you can do. I look at it this way... my house is pretty damn secure, so that's the important thing imo, means they can't get in short of smashing a window (which they'll struggle to do and will cause them to be noticed). So, if they want the S3, then they can have it from the driveway... It's insured and got GAP, so if it gets taken, I'm covered minus the aggravation of sorting it out. Not ideal, but at least they an't get in the house.

They'll be upset if they did break into my house and I was there however... quite quickly finding themselves off to spend some time in her majesty's cramped and cold rooms with the company of an imposing custody Sergeant.

I get you my house is very secure too, need to be in Glasgow LOL I quite like the Ghost product going to research it a bit then decide if it's worth it. I have GAP too, not sure if i would want the car back if some scrote had been driving it!

Just talking about this over on DW and I came across the report from the ONS about vehicle related crime.

Using police data, and data from a crime survey, it shows that vehicle thefts are the lowest they have ever been, with a steep decline since 2003.
There is evidence of a small increase in the last 2/3years, but still very low and not likely what you would call 'statistically significant' increases.

    https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopula...cles/overviewofvehiclerelatedtheft/2017-07-20

A report discussed in the Guardian puts the S3 as the most stolen car at 8.6 thefts per 1,000 cars. So for every 1,000 S3's that are at risk of being stolen, you would expect 8.6 to be stolen during 2015. While obviously a concern, it still only represents less than 1% of all cars at risk....

    https://www.theguardian.com/money/2016/jun/25/hi-tech-thieves-keyless-car-crime-electronic-security

I think SamP97 has hit the nail on the head personally. We are active on car forums and are regularly exposed to stories of thefts. This has big hand in distorting out perception of the risk and makes it seem much more common than it might be in reality.

Of course, this doesn't mean we should all be leaving our doors unlocked or not taking the necessary precautions, particularly if you happen to be in areas of higher than average car crime.

from my (limited) knowledge about 'charging' I believe that the burden of proof rises expotentially as the severity of the crime increases. This results in many 'criminals' ( at that point they are still innocent !! ) being charged with much lesser crimes - they are much easier to get a conviction for.
No good for the victims of course...........
Does nothing to disuade crimes being committed.

God help you if you even think about sorting it out yourself - not that it's really worth it. I like to think that they will eventually get their deserts, doing something to somebody much higher up the crime ladder !

I think you S3 owners would be safer living inside an enclosed apartment. It would be much tougher for a perp to break in to steal your keys, they would need entry into the building first, know your floor, then they would need entry into your apartment door.

Seems like every thread I read of this here is a brazen criminal waltzing right into someone's home and easily picking up the S3 keys and out they are off with the car.

This does not happen much in America. A car thief is liable to shot, and justifiably so.

You do have other problems there !
I'm all for the Police shooting these people ( along with a number of similar violent crimes ) but the do gooders would be up in arms...........

I wouldn't say that someone loosing their life for stealing a car is justified if I'm honest, and that's not being a do gooder, that's just what is reasonable. The punishment should fit the crime - just chop off their hand or something instead lol.

I didn't actually mean shoot and kill ............. but I do take your point.
It does seem that we keep hearing about cases where the punishment doesn't fit the crime - even when people are caught.

Haha, I assumed you didn't but thought I'd check.

Unfortunately, our justice system still has very firm roots in the past and hasn't caught up with modern society.

After a bit of research I am going to get the Ghost fitted early next week, not going to bother getting the App which overrides the immobiliser due to the fact if i forget to switch it off (Bluetooth) which is always on on my phone, it will render the system useless if i leave my phone in the car or it stays connected when i am in the house. I am still considering a CAT 6 tracker anybody with any pointers to the best product.

    1. Anti snap locks to front door and french doors.
    2. Jammers fixed with on with all the windows (top and bottom).
    3. Pat lock on the french doors / modified the door handle spindles so they can't be removed from the outside.
    4. Dusk till dawn lighting all around outside.
    5. House alarm set on a night down stairs (and when we go out).
    6. Had see CCTV put in when the house was built also.
    7. 2 x anti ram telescopic concreted posts in the drive which are tight to the front of the Audi and BMW.
    What else can you do?

I was still followed home by 4 rats in a fiat punto 4 weeks into ownership of the Audi back in May, but hopefully this lot will be a deterrent and they'll **** off.

They won't want my A3 for a 'job' as it's got a hair dryer motor for an engine but it is a black edition with plenty of goodies on it and same goes for the BMW as it's 116D and not a M140 or M135. The amount of M140's and M135's getting nicked put us off getting one hence why we got the 116D.

I can only assume all your S3's are being stolen for the bad lads to a) do some jobs in or b) break them for parts c) straight out of the country.

    Either way it's absolutely ****.

That's where i disagree because death would fit the crime for me as my family wouldn't have to live in fear of the same ****** coming back and breaking in a again but that said though i would settle for chopping their hands off as it would remind them of what they'd done everyday of their life..
