S3 Maintenance

Hiya ya guys, I've been looking into getting a S3 but just a few question's regarding the maintenance and cost's of running one. As i want to know what i should be expecting when i get one.

1. How much do people pay for servicing and who would they recommend? (i live near Birmingham).

2. Most people i've spoken to say they get about 30mpg if driving steady, is that about right?

3. Also Ive been told that the S3 get's through tire's really quick if driven hard all the time. Would they last 10,000 miles or less? How much to people pay for their tire's ?

4. Have people had any problem's with their S3. Don't want a big repair bill every year lol

1, this i dont know, i got 2 years servicing out of Audi when i got mine so its not something i have to worry about just yet

2, not sure what that works out to a full tank, but all depends how, when & where you drive, i normally get about 270ish miles out of a tank and thats driving fairly sensible, if you get a bit more carried away expect that to drop to 220ish

3, not gone through a set yet, but if your driving the car hard then it will eat them as any car will, also depends on the rubber you go for

4, their main weak spot is the clutch as its made of paper, so expect to replace that sooner or later... sooner if your planning on mapping it! another weak spot is the coilpacks but audi is doing a recall on them at the moment, so those should be sorted

Wow what a quick response! roughly what mpg do you average? Only my mate's got a r32 and he get's 25 mpg and i think s3's give better mpg. Are s3 clutch's expensive to replace if done by a specialist?

fuel consumption i found was better when i filled up half tank got about 150 so guess 2 of those is about 300 driving as you would in the congested roads we have and toeing it when the road is open.
my previous car was a 3.2 a3 which was a guzzler to say the least and get about 220-250 to the tank. as for the clutch don't know the cost but when mine fails will be getting an uprated one which will also help performance.

not sure what that works out to, but i guess 60lt in to 270 miles works at around 21-22mpg, but most of my driving is round town/stop start stuff and i although i do try to drive sensibly, every time i do drive it i do give it a couple of good bursts.

when i changed mine i went for an uprated clutch (sachs) and a new flywheel as mine had been slipping for ages and think it all came to including fitting about £1100 give or take a bit, so not cheap but a lot more robust them the Audi one

Brett at Birmingham Audi Approved on Watery Lane Middleway is fantastic. recently got all my work done at specialist rates but still got an Audi stamp in my servicebook

if you want a specialist you can't go wrong with Midland VW in Cannock. it's a bit of a mission but 100% worth it.

1- Mid 20s for normal mixed driving and 30 ish on a run. The longest run mine ever did was when I collected the car from Fontain in Slough and drove it back to Newcastle and I got 30mpg. There was some congested driving in that too so not bad at all for the type of car with 4wd.

2- I get 12-15K miles from Goodyear Assymetrics F1s on the front which are considered a fairly soft compound. Probably morelike 20K miles from the rears.

3- The clutch is the biggest weak point with the S3, mine lasted 30K miles but it was replaced under warranty by AUDI last October. It now has the later OEM SACHs version which is apparently better than the earlier LUK unit which seems to be more problematic. AUDI deny there was ever a clutch issue of course and yet seem very accomodating for clutch warranty claims.
This is true for the whole VAG range however.

Apart from that its a pretty robust car and at 3 years old, most of the common stuff has been sorted under warranty anyway and the car has gone through its `shakedown` period.

Just make sure you get a good one, thats a bit of a pampered car (like mine!!) with all of the necassary stamps etc..

As an overall ownership experience its been the best car Ive owned and Ive had about 25 cars over the last 20 years.

Regard's to the mpg i thought S3's were slightly better on mpg compared to the like's of a r32 or a Astra vxr. But from the figure's members are telling me they seem the same.

thats prob because most of us have them mapped and drive them spiritedly haha they are very addictive cars to drive quickly!

It really does depend on the type of driving you will do, and how you drive, will it be mostly town or motorways ? I can regularly get 32 - 33 mpg driving sensibly during the week, then go nuts at the weekends
