The 1.4 COD is a great engine - with S-Tronic it's decent though you'll probably get more power out of it in manual. You certainly won't be disappointed with it and as others have said you'll get used to the drop in power.

I got my car while we were in the process of buying our first house 6 months ago. I had no idea how much bills will cost me, or food or anything...but now I've settled in - I'm kicking myself for not getting an S3 when I had a chance, but then the extra dosh comes in handy! I spend most of it on car cleaning products...

Pro tip from me - keep a litre of oil ready at 5k miles :)

But on the other hand, the current low levels of road tax were never going to last, were they? The manufacturers have done really well to play the system to the point that road tax is almost a token amount, but governments have to raise tax from somewhere and the good old motorist has had it easy - on road tax, at least. But the beneficial aspect is that from 2017, road tax will be spent (we are told) specifically on roads whereas at the moment it is no secret that it is spent on just about everything but. We'll see whether that happens, but it would be nice to think that we shall see some improvement in our roads.

I think George Osborne has trumped the whole £20 road tax advantage by introducing a standard rate for all vehicles that have above zero emissions. It doesn't come into force until 2017, but unless your car is electric, you'll then pay £140 a year.

That must be for new vehicles only though ??

The only reason I bought this car was for the £20 road tax (honest guv, tongue firmly in cheek).
And the fact that I don't need to replace the front tyres every year.
And the fact that I save shedloads in fuel bills.
And the fact.....I'll stop there. Ultimately, savings all round from not wishing to go that little bit faster down a straight road.

Is the 1.4COD an oil drinker then?

I don't think so, from other posts it seems normal. Having to top up a litre in the first 5k miles surprised me but that's because it was bedding in and it uses more oil in the first 5/6k miles - it looks like others had the same experience.

After that it looks like every 10,000 or so. So standard consumption.

Guess I'll find out eventually. I've done 5k miles since April...so I don't think I'll find out till 2017!

If I was a cash buyer I would look into that .....but I am going through PCP and also Audi are absorbing negative equity in my S3 ....so unless you want absorb .

If you are in negative equity why buy a new car ?? Get to a balance position first.

I had to put in half a litre at about 7, 000 miles. It's now coming up to 12, 000 and is running really nicely. As others have said, the 1.4 COD is a very smooth engine.

I am not sure my bank balance can wait for me to get to a balance position :whistle2: ...When would that even be?

Its not that I am suddenly poor ....its that my life has changed from a settled stay at home spend little lifestyle.....to an unsettled go out and socialise, spend a lot lifestyle. Priorities have changed and this car needs to go ASAP as I am also travelling a hell of a lot more so economy is all of a sudden important to me.

To be brutally honest I should be buying a cheap and cheerful runabout for a while so I can get into a much better position ....BUT .....I cant do that as having a nice car is now important to me :racer:

Everyone's finances are their own and personal. I suppose on a pcp you know your outgoing but are you really saving that much. S3 residuals are better than cod. Doubt you will save more than £20 a month on fuel (average mileage) and £12 on car tax.. You have me thinking! 3 pints of beer a week.

David83S3

In my opinion .....
Will be saving £100 per month on payments .......and was banking on a healthy £100 on fuel :readit:...(Right foot dependant).

Will also be decreasing the risk of losing my licence as I have never driven like such a **** in all my life as I have in the S3 (My own fault I know)

My dearest mum will be happy I am no longer in what she calls "A death trap" :whistle2:

........As you can see I am justifying it all to myself to take the pain away from losing my S3 :sob:

Its all good though as now I have had a taste of dream car goodness I will be 100% coming back once I am done doing Glastonbury...bit of travelling ....bought a house .. ..etc etc ....and that's something to look forward to ....right :scared2:

How can you save £100 a month in fuel S3 = 30mpg COD 35-40 maybe. The £100 less on PCP is not always a real figure .. Beware of quick tricks with a calculator. Look at where you are now and where you will be in 2/3 years time. Go talk to a bank/ tame accountant would be my advice before doing anything rash.

jassyo06

T-Cut King !
Yeah sales geezer's do know how to gift wrap up figures.....
But david...sometimes its better the devil you know than the one you dont, just get clarification....on everything,l spend £60/£70 easily a week on fuel and l drive it like a parish Preist...250 miles/week just think long and hard.....life or a car...l know what i would choose at your age...wink,wink

David83S3

In my opinion .....
Nooooooooooooooooooooo .....Now I am doubting my decision!! Its not too late to change my mind ...........I have looked at the figures so many times now I think I am lost in numbers!?!?!?!?!

FYI folks ...."Burds" are not my bag :wtf:.......... :whistle2:

This is such a hard decision ....... I love my S3 so much and really don't want to let her go ......and if the fuel is like you say.....which thinking about it (and my driving style) it probably will be......then the saving is marginal ....and to be honest not worth losing the S3 ...

What good is a bank / tame accountant?

What makes it worse is that my local Audi took a deposit and have now gone quiet ......not sure if its ordered? I cant imagine it is as my agreement email had a new spec on it that we hadn't agreed a price on?

This is how I feel now ..... >>>>> :scared2:

I have posted something similar on another thread but basically.... Don't get rid unless you really have to. I have known people who have got rid of their prides and joys as they think they may struggle or work/overtime may dry up.... They sell it, buy a lesser car then realise that they could have kept it.

I really pushed myself to afford an S3, I was worried about the fuel. I drive like Mrs daisy 90% of the time but God do I love the 10%!

Don't be fooled by mpg facts and figures on new cars! I drove my mrs 6 month old gtd yesterday... Average mpg in that 39... Average in mine 34!

KEEPING IT.

Normal service has resumed :redrs4::hubbahubba::hubbahubba::hubbahubba::hubbahubba::hubbahubba:

....Now I just need to get that £500 back from Audi :sos:

Congrats! Went on your gut instinct - that means somehow it'll work out for the best.

Not saying the 1.4 would've been a bad choice, but it ain't no S3.

That's a great decision!! All you need to do now is jam something under the accelerator pedal and that'll save you a few bob.. haha

Excellent news David - awesome !!!

You'd end up paying for -ve eq somewhere in the deal as the dealers are pretty shrewd it would be in the numbers somewhere so your prob already saving £70/mth over next 2 years by not changing early which then cancels out any fuel savings based on 13,000miles/yr so think of it as status quo plus you get the car you really want.

I've just read all this thread...

Thank god the decision changed! My input would of been why change it for £100 less a month. Fuel figures can only be given if you can compare the two side by side.

I'm in the same boat as a few others on here, buying a house and would not get rid of my S3. For £100 less a month, that's about £4,800 extra you can borrow mortgage terms... Not really worth it IMO, ask the estate agent to knock it off the price ;)

Glad you are keeping it mate !!

That's one of the great things about the S3 I think - boot it and you get 20mpg, but if you want to save on fuel then drive economically and you'll get decent figures...35+.

I may have to do this soon.... Looking at a house and the S3 is restricting us :sob:

How long did you have your S3 for @David83S3 before changing? How are you getting in the 1.4?

Funny you mention that. ...... Im selling the S3 ASAP.

Signing on the dotted line today for the new motor which will be saving me £200 a month.

I will have had the S3 for just over a year.

What have you gone for? If another Audi, what did they do for you?

ts been an absolute killer .....but finally i have seen sense and can say "I cannot afford that car"

I looked at Audis

I looked at Golfs

I looked at Sciroccos

.....but then this happened !!!

DS3 Performance Black

Its cheap...full of gadge...and 210hp ...and Matt black

And ironically its the car i had b4 the S3 lol. I always said if only they did a bigger engine i wouldnt mind having another one.

Its not forever and will keep me happy whilst i enjoy Glastonbury. ..2 holidays. ..and multiple other events planned this year
