I picked up a stone chip on one of my chrome foglight rings, which I noticed a week or 2 ago, so today I thought I'd have a go at wrapping them in 3M carbon vinyl. Originally I was going to buy the new fog surrounds from the S3 Black Edition as I have a Black Optic grille waiting to be fitted, but the rings came out better than expected, so I'm glad I didn't waste money on a new set now. I think it will look better when I get the black grille fitted as it will pull all the dark bits together. Hope you like them. Paula x
nice little detail, looks like a top job! looks better than having the silver rings round and does make the front end meaner! will look ace when you fit that black grill!
how difficult was it to wrap them? I'm contemplating getting some CF vinyl and wrapping random bits myself.
It was pretty easy, Orts. You just have to make sure you use plenty of heat (hairdryer) on the vinyl, to make it stretch better. I used a scalpel to trim the excess vinyl and took my time trimming them, job done. I thought it would be hard to get the chrome rings out of the actual grille parts, but there are 2 clips in particular that if you manage to free those, the rest of the clips come away really easily. Thanks Dude! x
Cool! The good thing about the 3M vinyl is that if you mess it up a bit or get bubbles in the bits you've done, you can just heat it up, pull it off slowly and try it again. Happy wrapping.
its very forgiving stuff to be fair i had a little fun while doing my interior trims but other than that all good
Thanks James, yes you're right about not being able to see the carbon effect from any distance. I just wanted to lose the chrome from the rings and from a distance it looks like the rings are now black, which is the look I want for when I get my new black grille fitted. Lol, yeah I've had my fair share of fun with carbon vinyl in the past too, especially doing curved surfaces and odd shaped bits ..wasted a fair bit of the stuff when I first had a go with it too. Hey they look awesome paulie! Next up for you some lamin-x yellow fogs?? I did mine last week and fitted the black edition grill and coil overs! Pfeew we were busy!
Thanks Gordy . I've already bought some light smoke precut tints for the headlights and think the yellow fogs would look cool. Looking forward to seeing yours with your lovely new stance and grille!! Did you post piccies of it already?? Paula xx
Where is the best place to get the 3M Vinyl from? i am wanting to do the interior bits but dont want to spend alot on it.
Come on guys... Google is your freind! LOADS of places sell it including the 3M website!! 3m carbon fibre - Google Search= Carbon Fibre Vinyl: 3M UK & Ireland Got a few little bits i want to wrap myself! Good work paula looks very neat!
I have seen links and looked on the bay but I asked for "best place" to get them, I don't want to get ripped off with some cheapo stuff that looks ****. Thanks for the effort though Dan.
Also how much would i need if i wanted to wrap the astray, gear surround and the door inserts. Its a sportback so i know i won't have to do the curve on the door inserts and wont take up too much there.
No worries, As long as you get genuine 3m stuff youll be fine quality wise, theres loads of sellers on Ebay, just make sure its 3M and that the seller has good feedback, Suprisingly the 3M website is pretty cheap, or this one aswell, Carbon Fibre Vinyl and Carbon Fibre Vinyl Wrap from 3M carbon vinyl supplier Best way is just to measure it dude!
Thanks guys! As Dan says, there are lots of places to buy 3M or DiNoc carbon vinyl as it's sometimes called. I found a place on Ebay that sells it and it's the best value (not to mention quality) for the size of piece you get, 150cm x 50cm for 12,50 GBP inclusive of postage. It goes a long way. If anyone fancies doing the same as me, but isn't happy with the finish they are getting, I wouldn't mind wrapping the rings for you. Thanks Paul! No, it wasn't difficult, just needs a good deal of patience to heat the vinyl and smooth it round the contours of the rings, so you don't get any air bubbles trapped. As I said before, the worst bit for me was getting slightly burnt finger tips, with using the hairdryer, lol. If you need any help, give me a shout. Paula x
Nice one, Ash, you won't be disappointed with it, I promise you. It's very durable stuff and it really looks the part. Paula x
