I have a 66 plate FL S3, its just covered 8k miles. I noticed a week or so ago that when accelerating I witnessed torque steer for the first time in over 6 years! Traction control I know has been a heavily discussed subject on here but the light was almost on constantly. Logic suggested some sort of Quattro failure and Audi this morning confirmed the Haldex pump has gone.

Pretty sure these things got upgraded from PFL to FL, anyone else suffered with this?

Wow.. Sorry to hear that, just curious... do you use launch control often? Wonder if there's any pattern of the pre-mature failure....

Only used it twice. Also I don't drive it hard very often. Long term MPG from VC suggests 30+ MPG since new (8k miles on the clock). Something for all you FL owners to watch out for!

There's a thread on the PFL S3- with quite a few scenarios

Mine (a 2015 S3) has suffered transfer box / Haldex pump failure back in Feb....

Are you stock or modded?

Yeah seen a few issues with PFL but thought they upgraded the Haldex version. Car is standard which is concerning. Replacement parts are being fitted tomorrow AM.

PFL and FL Haldex pumps are part number common - no change.

Happened on my friends golf R after 9k it became a fwd golf R said it was awful haha

Also had this on our Mk6 Golf R a year or so back. I know it's a different generation of car, but it was quite funny having a FWD Golf R for a while.

You don't realise how much the haldex is used day to day, until it's gone.

I thought it was my low 3mm tyre tread for a few months...Launch Control was epic...I was launching it with clouds of tyre smoke behind from all four wheels. Four wheel burnouts and it still stayed in a straight line.
Took it in after reading a thread on here about the Haldex pumps and symptoms...they changed it a few days later. Mine is an 8V.
Had new tyres too....

Its failed again, first they changed the Haldex pump and was working as it should for 24 hours. It failed again the following day and apparently was a software issue - fixed within 10 mins...........Now its gone again! The service department are wanting me to show them the problem and in their words 'make sure I am not trying to bend the law of physics' and/or expecting too much from the car. I am also taking a demo S3 out with them to compare. I am sorry but wheel spin from 1st to 4th in the dry just isn't cricket if you ask me!

Anyone know what my rights are based on a PCP agreement with repeated failures and a car that isn't performing as it should?

hello Friends, sorry to revive such an old thread but it applies to my situation directly!

I havent been in an Audi for 5 years and a few weeks ago i picked up 8V FL S3, having owned a modded 8P s3 i can clearly tell the quattro is not working.
Lots and lots of torque steer and traction light all the way through 1 2 and 3. with ESP off the wheels spin like mad and i even get bad axle tramp when its not 100% dry. booked it in, audi technician said there are no errors and nothing wrong when he test drove the car. i told him no way and said i wanted to test the car with him.
we had his laptop plugged in and i was driving, after the first few seconds leaving the dealership it was lighting up traction control, he admitted that wasn't normal. it took 3 rapid pull offs before the car threw a haldex pump error. we left it at that and he said he'll send the file to germany and get back to me.

Ara blue, virtual cockpit and all the other extras I wanted so I want to love this car but it drives like **** :(

anyone else had pump issues with a FL?

How many miles has it done and when was it last serviced, Audi recommends every 3 years for an
4A58F2B6 A757 467B A8B9 E70979E025BA
oil change, but you also need to remove the Haldex pump and clean the gauze filter, Audi don’t do this and it really needs this. I had my Haldex oil change done recently by an independent and I was really surprised at the state of the gauze oil strainer at 27000miles, of course AUDI won’t care as when it goes wrong through a blocked pump which burns out you’ll be buying a new pump from them.

Stubbly is bang on with the haldex cleaning routines... For both Gen4 and Gen5. Pull the pump and clean the filter/gauze. Audi only ever change the oil and the crud build up can block the filter and cause pumps to fail. I get mine done every 20k to be on the safe side which is more than stated in the service routines but no issues so far on a 2014 RS.
This was the state of mine at last clean

I’ll be getting mine done annually for piece of mind and the small cost associated with having it done.

I have a 19 plate S3 with just over 17000 miles and have been thinking of getting my haldex serviced early
Can anybody recommend anywhere to get it done around north Manchester area ?

Volksmaster Oldham did mine... They've looked after my RS since I got it as they use genuine parts and have access to Audi service database also

Thanks for that

How much should I be looking to pay ? By using genuine Audi parts and being on there database i'am guessing it keeps the warranty intact ?

Around July last year I think it was about £140 for the labour and haldex oil... You're warranty should remain in tact if you prove to Audi that OEM parts are used at Indy garages yes. I understand your worry though with yours still being 2yrs old, why not give Audi a bell to see how much they will charge you for the haldex service but also pulling the pump to clean the filter to compare...

All you need is a jack, some stands, a few tools and the oil. I bought all of that tor €250 (I bought a lot of tools) and the oil costs €13 on winparts.ie (I'm sure there's a UK site thay foes ot cheap).
Takes about 20 minutes. Audi told me that they charge €200 and I know they don't clean the filter. I'll be making money next time.

I bought a car from audi that all the work had been done on it by audi (so filter never cleaned) and did it at 60k miles. Didn't look anywhere near as dirty as yours. Ive never seen one so gunked up! Just goes to show you how important it is to service it regularly.

My car was serviced by Audi from new until I bought it at the end of last year, the same owner from new who had never launched the car (proof via a scan) and I know him very well. I had it serviced by an independent and was stood by watching throughout. I had it done after seeing many examples of the oil filter gauze being covered in the black gunk and it’s not unusual as I have seen the photos of it on many different cars. And it’s not even reached 30000 miles yet and 4 years old.

VCDS scan for the launch? I'd be interested to know if mine was

I don’t know if it was VCDS as it was done by a retrofit specialist after fitting a reversing camera for me. I believed the owner but wasn’t sure about Audi mechanic post service test drives.

Ahh fair. I'd love to know and get the rev camera fitted. My car came with literally no extras.

Mine was well spec’d, Pano roof, super sport seats, Virtual cockpit, B&O, front and rear sensors, full nav etc so I am very pleased with it.

Rear sensors and heated seats. It's a 2016 so it's fairly unequipped.

I got it for the engine tbf. But I plan on fitting

• auto dim mirror
• rev camera
• auto lights
• cruise control

I'm not sure there's much more I can do

Yeh will give Audi oldham a ring first and see what they say

I'd rather leave it to a garage to sort out for me

Based on my previous experience with my S3, Audi will refuse to clean the actual pump filter, as they reckon it’s a ‘sealed part’ for life. They will only change the oil.

You’d be wasting your time asking Audi as it’s not in their service regime for anything besides the oil, best to go to an Indy and get the job done properly and save yourself some money at the same time too.

Just make sure you dont tell the main dealer you've had it done. If something goes wrong with the haldex subsequently they will then just blame your chosen garage.

I did my own 2 weeks ago, see my thread 'Vital fluids', seeing your images of the Haldex gauze makes me feel happier about mine now, (2017, 17K) Audi do not even list the plastic gauze as a spare or recognise cleaning it, It only takes a few minutes to clean out.
Hadex oil change pump removal Haldex oil change pump removal strainer 1 dirty
Haldex oil change pump removal strainer 2 clean Haldex oil change pump replacement

I bought the correct oil from Audi, make sure that it is used for the change. (AG 060 175 A2 3H0401 HALDEX OIL)
Audi do recommend changing the bolts and the 'O' ring should you have the pump off! and again a new drain plug and washer when you change the oil!
(Crewe Audi sell all these parts in a kit through here)
But don't forget the Haldex controller has to be reset with whatever software you are using after changing the oil, some indies may not know this!

what happens if you dont reset the haldex controller?

Apparently - the controller adjusts the pump pressure as the oil ages, resetting the controller puts the pump through a series of settings and pressures to re calibrate it with the new oil.
I don't know if this is 100% correct but that's as I understand it

Fast forward to Today, my car is booked in at the dealers so i dropped it off this morning,
My Technician got the go ahead from Germany end of last week to test the Haldex system and replace parts as needed.
Apparently the test consists of checking the fuse on the haldex pump. (thats what tech said)

I just got an sms from the techie now saying he needs to replace the pump (under FWP thank goodness) and he will order parts, but im worried that its a dirty filter that caused this issue and ,as mentioned above ,audi dont want to touch that part.
Where would I be able to get a replacement filter? Or would i be able to instruct the dealership to clean it at my cost?

Happy that we found what was wrong with the car and holding thumbs thats the only problem!
