I had a similar experience mate although nothing like what Bristol quoted!
Just an oil change service ranged from £170 -£300.
All main dealer and the top price I was quoted said the oil came to £160 on its own lol.
Don't be afraid to ask for discount!

That price difference (and the assumption regarding Bristol's effort) begs the question of whether or not you made sure they were all quoting for exactly the same work. Did you ask them all to break the cost down so that you were comparing apples with apples?

I don't pretend to know, but it's a bit difficult not to think that Bristol are including something that the others aren't, and are quoting accordingly.

One of the things that gets on my tits about all this is that the dealerships (or service receptionists) appear to assume that their customers have absolutely no gumption whatsoever, a zero level of intelligence and that the notion of ringing someone else up for a comparative quote would simply never occur to them.

    Why is that?

Do most of their punters really just toss their keys to the service receptionist, turn smartly on the heel of their patent brogues and say 'Let me know when you've finished eh, pal' over their shoulders?

    I suppose they must.

I asked them all for a quote on my first service - as I said in my post, they must be adding things they think I need, and if that is the case I would expect them to break that down the addition costs for things I havent asked for.. though can't say I will be calling them back!

I understand what you are saying, but I wouldn't expect them to provide a breakdown of costs as a matter of course.

If you ask then certainly they should, but I don't think there's any obligation on their part otherwise.

    Caveat emptor and all that...

I not long ago paid £350 in Cheltenham for 1st service and they wouldn’t budge. How did you get it so low?

First service could mean either fixed or variable/long life which are different.
If fixed like mine, at 12 months/9000 miles you only need an oil change for which I paid £190
Variable is dependant on how the car is used/driven and will include oil and inspection which costs an extra £100+
You can check which your car is set to on the MMI and should ask Audi which one they are quoting for.

Thanks for the above Matt, mine is on variable as was covering over 16k a year, my blood started to boil then when saw that but the above explains it.

Now that my annual mileage is about halve should I get the service interval switched to fixed do you know, Any harm on leaving it on variable until my next service?

I'm old school, didn't buy an S3 to drive it in my socks to try for 500 miles out of a tank of fuel and most S3 engines, especially low milers will have a relatively hard life. Rapid acceleration with the forces and temperatures this creates is an engine killer and to try and combat this I believe in regular oil changes, especially since I intend keeping my car beyond the 5 year warranty.
I posted a rather long explanation on oil changes this thread some months ago.

No harm to the car's value or warranty leaving it on variable, It's up to you.

Good luck with that. I just recently had mine serviced and asked them to switch it to fixed service. She explained that the car knows when it needs a service and I should leave it on variable. I explained that it was an S3 doing 5-6,000 miles a year and therefore should be fixed as per the manual. She explained that it's not normal to switch it to fixed as an S3 knows when it needs its service and adapts the timings accordingly. I explained that was basically rubbish and that I would rather the car be on a fixed schedule so my oil change and inspections fall inline with how they should be and the car is serviced appropriately. She explained it would be and the car knows best. I explained I'd be back in twelve months and promptly exited the building. You wouldn't think they'd complain as basically I'd be there more often...! :)
