S3 8V Part Throttle Characteristics

Morning all,

Recently purchased a S3 8v with 40k on the clock. The car has full service history and on initial inspection/when driving seems sound enough. That said I have noticed some slight hesitation or surging when in 2nd and 3rd gear under part throttle, for example when pulling gently out of a junction or off a roundabout. Could this be early signs of plugs/coils or am I just driving the car wrong?

Some information to help;

Car is manual
Driving mode is always in Dynamic
I have tested for clutch slippage and this is OK
Car seems to pull well, full boost on full throttle (boost gauge doesnt drop)
Oil temp seems OK, between 100 and 105 when warm
No fault codes or engine lights observed

Check the software version of the ECU, if there is a newer one update it. Also reset the learned values after update.

Ok, is there any easy way of checking this?

The car was purchased from a main dealer so should they have updated the ECU as part of their preperations?

My manual does the same and has always done in the 5years I have owned it.
If i use slight throttle with the engine pulling, as it passes some points in the rev range (e.g. can't remember exactly but is around the 3k mark) you can feel slight peaks/troughs in the acceleration, nothing dramatic and others can't feel it but it is there. I have always put it down to the mapping e.g. could be right at the point that emissions/noise are done. Other machines I have did similar things that once remapped resolved to differing degrees.
All depends on how 'badly' it is doing it.
Fuller throttle no issues.

Yeah mine seems to be between 2.5k and 3k. It does seem to coincide with the car coming on boost.

I think I notice it more because I drive my wifes 1.4 TFSI which seems to boost alot smoother but guessing that could be down to a much smaller turbo?

Just make a scan of your car with vcds etc

Isn't that around the point that it makes changes to the cams? Perhaps its to do with the Camshaft Adjuster N205 Valve which failure is a common problem. Possibly on the way out. Total guess though.

Might change this anyway. Does anyone know the part number, is it expensive?

Had the car health checked and dyno'd recently and seemed to pull well. BHP was pretty much spot on 302 which I thought was impressive for a 4 year old car. The only thing the engineer said was that he noticed a dip on the graph roughly where I feel this change in characteristic and he said the timing ******* slighting at the same time. He said this could be down to the factory map or bad fuel so I am in the process of trying to purge the fuel system with Tesco Momentum.

Would someone mind taking a look at the data below and let me know if they see anything out of the ordinary, more specifically the timing angle retardation (Click on pictures for full size);

noticed something new this evening. Since getting the resonator delete fitted I can hear a slight pop out of the exhaust during hard acceleration between 3k and 4k rpm. I have also picked up on the boost gauge fluctuating in 2nd gear. Still no fault codes though. Really frustrating!

Think I’m going to take it to the dealers next week. Ask them to check the coils and cylinder compression.

Mine always feels a little flat after coming on boost and between 3k and 4k, after that it picks up again and pulls hard to the red line. I think it's just the way they are, and most likely a feature resulting from some compromise to help with the drivability at low revs and possibly emissions (both guesses). It does seems to drive more or less like a normal car at low revs which has impressed me about it, unlike older turbo cars which literally had nothing up to about 3krpm.

I’ve been getting all the same characteristics as you with my car including the one above.

I initially thought it was a possible misfire and started a thread on this about a month ago.

Got the car on a diagnostic’s machine and this is what I got back

Cleared the code and then ordered one of these.

£33.23 inc vat direct from Audi which i was pleasantly surprised was so cheap.

It was 2 weeks by the time I managed to get this picked up and fitted which was also a piece of cake,T20 torque bit is all you need and it literally takes 5 mins. Took it back to the garage to get the fault code cleared again but there was no code to clear which I thought was a bit strange considering I had run it for 2 weeks before changing the valve.

Initially I thought it had stopped the problem all together but it hasn’t it’s just not as bad as it was.
