Any pics out there of your discs. Seen a car today with rust on outer rim of rotor disc...

My rears have some rust, crazy after just a few months! I intend to upgrade to some stainless steel ones.

TX.

De ja ****** vu; the 8P rear disc hubs needed TLC and nothing has changed... :readit:

Steel + water = rust! Nothing you can do about it. Dont get hung up on it!

It must be me but I rarely if ever take such a view. When employed I was instrumental in supplying diesel engines for propulsion and auxiliary use to the MOD and no way would they accept our iron and steel diesel engines for use in a marine environment were they to rust as quickly as does the rear brake discs on an Audi RS3.

Having complained, back in 2012, to my Audi dealer about my own rusted rear brakes and having had their typical response I set about rectifying my own rear discs and then those of others, all successfully.

An interesting report and details can be found here:

Its bare steel that gets extremely hot whilst exposed to water/salt/road grime. Its inevitable. And engines aren't consumables so thats a different matter all together!

Plus its a brake disc. What does it matter? If a wing or door was rusting then fair enough. I just cant see the big deal in it, and why you would need to raise a problem with Audi about it! Seems a bit petty!

And there's yer choice; do something or do nothing just don't complain about it...

My rear brake-discs don't rust 'cos I did do something about it :

Excuse the tape measure, that was assisting someone else with an issue...

I would never complain about a rusty brake disc! But if you feel you need to go down that route then power to you!

Btw, mine aren't rusty, its called patina! :D :p

@45bvtc In the Thread you mentioned you give instructions for the rear break hubs.
What exactly did you do with the discs? Is it a durable solution? Or did you simply use other discs and brake pads?

I applied a coat of POR 15 to the rear brake disc hub and vents and on all cars it has proved durable: even Stafford Audi considered the same product/process to resolve customer complaint (so much written about POR15 on the 8P RS3 forum)

However, and just to improve the aesthetics for myself and for no other reason I communicated with MTEC and sourced a suitable pair of rear discs for my RS3; these are not warranty compliant but then my warranty period was over anyway.

Amazes me that a company like MTEC can provide a rust-free product but Audi can't: but then again, I only raised the issue once and then did my own thing...

These MTEC's have had 12-months use (same as in post #7):

I well understand that some guys are not happy with a 19-inch open spoke wheel with a rusty hub behind and that's all I'm saying here: I also understand R55ENS point; so it's all down to the individual for me

If you want to keep your original rear-brake discs but apply a durable coating over the rust then I'd recommend POR15... :hi:

Since my car has 4 years of warranty and I bought the "Audi Fleet Comfort" package. The package includes all wearing parts including the brake discs and pads. So I won't consider changing the discs myself.
But I'm wondering why the heck Audi can't just use a rust-free disc.
Your disc proves that it is possible.

I also had the rusty hub problem on my S3. Going to get the hubs painted with your recommended product, thanks!

Here's my STD OEM rear discs, Gorillajeabus, with POR15 coating and 3-years of running to include 3-winters...

Mmm, I like that. So you sanded back the disc, then coated with POR15? Did you give the backing plate behind the same POR15 treatment? That looks immaculate! I like!

Just a light sanding on the hub to provide a key and no more and then POR15; and yes AudiNutta, clear POR15 on the back plate

POR15 is an excellent water repellent...

Hm, sounds great.

I'm due to take my car off the road for a few days come summer, I'm going to be applying paint coatings etc to protect it. I will have a go at doing them on my S Line before I c*** it up on the RS3 when I get my hands on one :tearsofjoy:

How did you apply the por15 clear 45bvtc?

I'd like to coat underneath components with it. I have a two post lift for easy access but don't want to spray it does it brush on quite easy?

Brilliant that's great thanks for that. Another quick question have you every used or tried the bilt hamber stuff hydrate I think it is. Think I'll go porntho esp since it is brush on and will be relatively mess free. I remember doing my focus Rs a few years ago in 2011 and used the wax oyl brushed on it went off soft and sticky Matt black suited the car fine and lasted well for the two years after it. But would rather the clear stuff this time.

No experience of the Bilt Hamber products; I used POR15 following my use of it on rusty brake calipers: the brake calipers (non powder coat) of both my Audi TT and Audi A2 have been 'restored' with POR15, I tend only to propose products I've handled myself and seen the long term results. I also use POR15 on my front brake discs; ok, so it yellows, but they don't rust

Not bad for 4-years of use; but then again I don't use OEM brake pads...

Thanks for that the 15 is clear to start with then and parts that are heat sensitive get a touch yellow? That's fine by me. And experience and recommendation from yourself is a winner for sure. I also plan to change the front pads early doors as I'm not arising about with the crap oem fall apart jobs that leave scored discs I'll be going red stuff if they do them with the sensors if not I know the yellow def have them.

I use quite a lot of Bilt Hamber products, they work very well and are easy to use.

these pics were on my Z4.

I'm on Redstuff front and rear but without sensors - easy to mod the wiring: Redstuff with the correct sensors can be purchased from the US.

Tried Yellowstuff and pulled 'em out quickly as they didn't suit my style of driving (I drive on the accelerator pedal rather than the brake) and the noise was horrendous - sounded like the pads were ploughing a furrow across the disc

Each to their own mind, what suits one don't suit all; but Redstuff are pads I strongly recommend for road use with the RS3

Mine will be road use poss a track day or two as a one off if I can get the correct insurance at decent price.

Interested in the mod for the seniors as not worried about having them. I can tell who my brakes are worn.

Quite fancy those m tec drilled or is it dimples rear discs to match also.

Oh and ment to say thanks for the I for in the bilt products good to hear first hand usage. How was durability?

easily last a few years... well it has on my Jeep that get abused off road... not sure about the Z4 I sold it soon after! lol

Use the existing OEM plug and join the 2-sensor wires and insulate, job done:

thats what I was looking for, that flower thing thats joined to the disk, mine looks dirty and horrible, is this one treated?

No patters, but I did try once with POR15 but removed that and it was out with the Dremel and some 'metal' cutting and polishing compound (Ebay) finishing off with Solvol Autosol - and to be honest the spiders now stay lean with no more attention than the rims get and that's with a 5% domestic Flash to 95% tap water spray on and wash off and no worries...

Note: the sides and surfaces to the rear of the polished spider front face are coated with POR15 'clear' and it's an excellent water and dirt repellent - hope this helps

Works for me, patters; if I can help further then just ask, always willing to help, it's what gets me up every morning...

PS: I polished those spiders in November 2013 and all they've had is a light rub over with Solvol Autosol since - usually when I'm swapping over from summer to winter or winter to summer rubber, plus running EBC Redstuff brake pads sure does help, none of those nasty OEM pads for me...
:racer:

I done it :) on ene anyway, do the other tomorrow, before and after (different wheels actually, because I never thought of the pics until I had done the deed!)

Where's best place to order the clear POR 15 ??

I ordered the silver POR15 to use on my S Line, I took it for one spirited drive and got alarmed by clouds of smoke when slowing for a cattle grid. The paint has only gone and turned orange, it looks horrendous. It is bright, electric orange on the worst part of the discs. I'd recommend to avoid the coloured POR15.

@B19, I got mine off eBay for £28.

Thanks for that info, I will see if someone has experience with the clear stuff. If your wanting to sort the orange use hamerite silver as I've used that on cars over the years and won't discolour....

No problem, the seller was great. I can get the name if you want? I had issues getting the tin open because it had leaked and dried rock hard. So I had to totally destroy the tin to get it open, I complained and he informed me that these tins are designed to be one time use (seems a bit silly), but none the less, he gave me a new one out of courtesy.. not bad for him to send it out so willingly being worth £28 if you ask me.

Thanks, I will have to look at that if I did try and get it done again. I only used POR15 because of the good reviews on the forum. I bought £1.99 calliper paint for the callipers and haven't had any issues with that, it's bonded extremely well haha.

I believe all experiences with the clear POR15 are good, from what I have read previously and I will for sure get some when I finally have an RS on the drive :-(

Thanks, I'm sure you will have a RS3 soon FL or second hand on the drive, I hate cars with rust on discs so I just need to protect my new ones, my car never sees rain but washing car can mark front disc hubs,,, I've a A3 sline 14 Tfsi like yours in drive too, nice car and just looks and drives like my old S3 15 plate ( without the 4 exhausts )

I can only hope, I've not been too keen on the idea of a used one.. Depends on what is out there at the time I suppose.

I had planned on a daily driver as well as an RS, however I will be 20 at the time and the insurance on a 140hp 2.0TDi A4 Avant, will be £600 more than the RS.. £4000!!!! It's crazy!! So I guess the RS will have to live through the bad weather :-(

They are nice cars but I regret having the 122ps model rather than the 150hp cylinder on demand engine. I did it to save £800 on insurance initially. The 120hp isn't a bad little engine, but not powerful in any way haha.
