    Hi all
Having problems with my RS4 B8.5 2013 plate

Basically took it to local Audi/BMW Specialist as it was running like a ship on rough sea for
Them to give me the bad news of that I have two shocks absorbers that have failed one being passenger side front and the rear drivers side
They basically said that I will need the four corners doing which is coming out at £3500!

    My question is
Do I need to do the four corners if the other ones haven’t failed?
    Does £3500 sound fair?
Why would they fail at just under 30k mileage

    I’m in the birmingham area

On my to do list is
New discs and pads aswell so I want to chose a place carefully

    Can anyone recommend anywhere

    Thanks for reading

    Hi bud.

If it's the DRC (sounds like it) then it's well reported and documented. Fails a lot. The previous owner sorted mine under warranty. If it hasn't been done already (check your service history) then it's common for Audi to offer a contribution towards it.

I think as they're diagonally apposed, one effects the other. It does sound steep mate if I'm being honest. Don't get me wrong, it's not a cheap fix but that does sound steep. Take to an Audi RS specialist.

MRC in Banbury, ADS Automotive in Preston and of course Unit 20 in Chester are all I know. They might quote you better and offer advice on completely replacing the DRC system with high end coilovers and aftermarket damping/anti roll bars.

That's what I'm looking to do when (not if) the DRC fails again. Hope this helps.

Great advice can be had on www.rs246.com.

Good luck and let us know how you get on

I'll check prices in etka to see what the prices are as I'm curious now.

    Thanks everyone for your replies
    Update
I’m taking car to Audi next Wednesday, the guy I dealt with in the past has said they need to look at the car and then decide the contribution they can give me
Thing is I’ve only done 6k miles and I hoping that will go in my favour fingers crossed.
Let’s see what they come up with
I’m not holding my breath though

Also I got a price for the complete unit shock absorber at £620 each that’s just the part no labour

    I’ll keep you all posted

    Update
    Ok so they updated me

Bad news first Audi UK basically said No we ain’t helping at all

    Next bad news

Suspension fault due to o/s/f DRC flexi pipe has split and caused fluid leak. Requires o/f/s shock, n/s/r shock and also accumulator then DRC re-charge
    · Spring = £0.48
    · Tube = £196.51
    · n/s/r shock = £478.00
    · bolts = £32.80
    · valve/accumulator = £1047.06
    · o/s/f shock = £478.00
Total labour time is 5.5 hours £851.40

So all in all just over £3000

I had Chat with a nice chap at listers where my car is and he said he will see what he and listers can do for me as it was where I brought it from and where I’ve took it in the past - I did argue the case that I’ve only done 4000 miles in the space of a year and wouldn’t of thought these should of failed
Never the less I wasn’t holding my breath

    Good News
The kind people of listers have decided to pay half towards the repair bill . I will say the Listers Coventry have been very nice to me this time and in the pass when I had to have work done. Always looked after me and done me proud - Well Done Listers

While she’s in the garage - I’m treating her to a new set of shoes all the way around, new disks and pads all the way around.
Four wheel alignment (free of charge)
Brake fluid change (free of charge)
    Aircon service (free of charge)
    Major service
Full Valet - so she looked like she’s brand new. (Free of charge)
Centre exhaust piece (a little corroded)

Can’t wait to get her home and back to her oldself

All in all it’s costing me £5300. Which I don’t think is bad considering

    What do you guys think

    Gulp.

Don't know where to start man. Wow. Ok, good response first. A 50% contribution is very decent considering just how bad we've seen a lot dealerships behave recently on here. So. Plus there.

Honestly though, you could get KW V3 coilovers all round, new anti roll bars fitted too for under £2500 I reckon. The Coilovers are only £1650. That's all round. This is the exact reason I won't be replacing any faults with DRC. If I was ever on the fence, I'm now sold on KW V3s. DRC is mint. When it works. But that bill is astronomical. And it 'will' happen again from everything I've seen.

As a maintenance cost, it's just obscene. All power to ya if you have the money. It's probably just because I'm not in a position to do that. So I'll have to plan ahead to mitigate/eliminate it. For me, DRC is like inheriting Carbon ceramics. Fantastic but if they break or when they finally die, it's an insane replacement. So I'd just get steel brakes at that point.

Most importantly though, is the fact that you want to keep it! And have that joy back in your life. I'll be exactly the same. Just a different solution. Haha. You getting a decent courtesy car?

    Thanks for your reply,
I do understand your point about coil overs etc but I’ve never been one to mess with my cars or upgrade them as I value them original call me old fashioned in that way.
Also not saying they would but I’d hate to put coil overs, steel brakes etc and it to drive and act very differently.
No offensive to anyone but If I was going to buy an RS4/6/7 or anything like that I’d take the original one every time instead of a modded one. Maybe that’s just me though.

Yeah your right everyone picks solutions. Not always the same but good in there only
    Merits.

Ha nope no courtesy car as I dropped it off they did offer me one but my car wouldn’t of been seen as quick as it did (booked in on Friday looked at Wednesday)

I honestly can’t wait to get her back, i do love my car and can’t wait to see her looking all sexy and ready to drive.
Oh and nah I wish I had an endless pot of money - I’m taking a small loan to sort this out oh ****** but it’s worth it.
Like I said in the past i’d sell my soul for the joy of RS4 and in the future a new RS6 hmmmmm
Note to self - need to win lottery or rob a bank

Sorry to bring up an old thread here. I would appreciate some advice from OP and other owners of B8 RS4. I went and drove one today which has 26k miles on it. The car has an extensive service history but never had DRC done. On taking the car out initially the car was pulling to the right. I then turned around and the most godly awful sound of grinding came from the rear N/S. Initially I thought I hit something and was dragging it so stopped and then drove off again and the noise came back. A long contiguous grinding sound. I terminated the test drive and headed back to the dealer and it stopped, but as soon as I pulled into the dealer, and up the small incline you could hear the suspension flexing and it started again.

Supposedly the histoy states the car had a shock absorber in July on the rear O/S which wasn't covered under warranty. The dealer stated they have already put the car through a used car MPC and carried out a service, but somehow something is not right.

OP was this similar to what you experienced or any advice for me? Should I stay well clear of the car?

Cheers for the advice. There isn't many out there and this one is bang on the specification. In fact, Thundercliffe your spec is identical minus Lunar Silver interior. Its an odd one as the owner purchased it last December and traded it in for an RS6. I wonder if he suspected something was going to be costly and chopped it in without the dealer knowing.

If you absolutely had to have it I would be asking for reassurances (and something in writing) regarding warranty. As it appears to have a problem at this point in time you could request the work/DRC is done in advance, they may say no and you may have a decision to make...

Is there anyway of knowing if its DRC related? I've spoken to Audi UK Technical and they are saying its a 'Characteristic' of the vehicle. Typical response. Dealer has said if its DRC its not worth the cost and they will ship it to auction, which seems a bit iffy on the merits of whether they can even do that.

Which dealer? Main dealer or exotic ? You need to track down the service and warranty invoices. If that involves tracing the cars sale history from new then so be it. The individual service/repair invoices tend to be kept at the dealer it was done at.

They aren't always passed along. If it's a car you're very interested in, then chase these people up and make them do their job. At the very least, you'll learn if it's the right car or not bud is it on autotrader?

Then the DRC is done bud. Avoid. Sorry, I didn't see this. Mate, I genuinely chased after about half a dozen that were bob on and great specs! But something always felt off and i kept missing out. Week later, the perfect spec and much much more popped up.

It's worth holding out bro. Promise

Cheers for your help. I'm more hesistant now as my profile picture was our 3 month old S3 that cut out and wouldn't restart in lane 2 of a dual carriageway and we were left for 3 hours waiting for recovery and then lost the car for 46 days before a 'buy back' could take place. We've been without a car since. I've spoken to every dealer thats listed on the vehicles history, it has stayed within the Sytner group and has had a lot of work done. Final drive front and rear has been done, but nothing about DRC. They are saying they have checked it and it looks fine, but its a worry as i don't believe its part of the extended warranty.

Also, the stitching on the drivers right side bolster (body) is starting to frail. I've never seen this before, is this something to worry about? The dealer said they won't repair it as it costs too much.

    Heres the car anyway.

The mileage is good and it's a great spec. I came across a similar car that looked perfect but was over 20k miles over its S tronic oil change. You've got to be ruthless and stick to your guns bud.

I'd keep looking. I know exactly how you feel! Haha. Trust me. But you don't want DRC issues from the start. You can never truly predict what's going to happen to a car but you've got to put your mind at ease as much as possible haven't ya?

Firstly, sorry OP I've taken over your thread.

I agree, the car has more spec than listed which is a bonus but the DRC is something I no little about as my S3 had magnetic ride. From reading on here, it can be a true headache if it goes wrong and you don't notice it. I would hope I would, but without actually knowing what it feels like, its going to be a hard one to judge.

I'm getting a health check on mine from a specialist so if there's any horrors (I hope not) I'll let you know. I'd like to try and learn how to prevent it going wrong. As it appears if one side goes, they're all gonna go.

But hearing the sounds you did from the get go is a clear indicator.

    Hi all,

Yeah going to be honest with you they seem like that want to get rid of it and saying they Would just auction it is alarmbells

If I’d of had to pay full price of just two corners of shocks it would of been £3200 so in worse case horror for all four it’s £6400
Still if I’m honest it’s worth doing if it’s your car you own as it’ll hold the value for resale as original I know people like to modify cars but I’ve always been one for standard

but saying you gonna buy it with these problem is a big no no unless it is stupidly cheap and your willing get it sorted but lets face it they aren’t cheap

According to even Audi's manufactures warranty before extended, the suspension isn't covered after the first 6 months of 6000 miles. I would hope that Audi UK would help, but in fact they don't have too according to warranty schedule.

Well that's a disgrace. Obvious design flaw if they wouldn't even warrant against it. £6400 for all 4 corners too. Man, that's near impossible to get back in resale. Walk away haha!

Nope no warranty ran out a year ago and when I went to renewal it was £3000 and I was like hmmm it’s a bit much
Went to the Audi Listers dealership Coventry
They did ask Audi uk if they would help but they said no
I argued the case that I actually only drove the car 5000 miles since they seen it last and asked nicely if there is anything they would do and they said they go 50/50 with me so that was a big bonus to me,
All in all they changed two shocks and the middle bit (I forget what it’s called device that send info to both shocks etc)

I can’t fault Listers Coventry really as they did me proud yes I handed over £5300 for all the bits I had done but most of them was general wear and tear - i.e dicks and pads, major service and four new Tyres.

Don t get me wrong, I've never modded a car seriously either. I just can't afford for that to go wrong so often. Trying to be proactive and find a set up that works just as well. I think Audi k ow they created a great set up that simply doesn't last.

Yeah there should be disclaimers man. You'd have thought they'd had cracked it with the B8 after having issues with C6 RS6 and B7 RS4. I've had mine changed and fully replaced system with re-pressurised DRC by previous owner under warranty. Hoping it'll be fine now.

The lads on RS246.com suggested putting the damping in Auto as it sits between Comfort and Dynamic. It is absolutely spot on now Just right.

From what I heard it’s catching it before it’ll too late as in - usually it’s the pipe that discharges it and if it runs dry it’s dead.
so I think the key is if the car doesn’t feel
Right stop driving it straight away and get it recovered and looked act to save the drc completely recharging is t that much completed to replacement
