RS3 vs A45s

They don’t want to do a drag race side by side coz they know the rs3 will beat it ;) the a45 weights like over 100kg more than the rs3

Keep in mind that any pre launch info is going to be scrutinised and wetted by AMG PR, there’s no free lunch for the journo’s. It won’t be till the car is on the street that we start getting transparent reviews.

The power delivery of the AMG 2L Should be good on the track, but it won’t be a fast car as a daily wth peak torque a 5k rpm. The next version with the electric booster should be a more rounded performer.

While I do like the a45 over a lot of the competition the sound is a big let down when compared to the rs3. The a45s sounds far worse than the previous gen a45 as well..

Will be interesting to see how they price the a45s. I don't think it'll be as big a hit as the previous gen from what I've seen so far. On top of that the current fl rs3 outperforms it regardless what some silly reporting says.

The next gen rs3 will have 450hp I'll guess, then the next gen fl a45 will come with 460, then the fl rs3 will be 480 and the cycle goes on. Somewhere along the line the whole electric add ons and sound regulations will kill it for genuine enthusiasts but hopefully we've still got a couple years. Listening to the new a45s and opf rs3 makes me think that those couple years have actually already passed :O, next car will definitely not be a new one !

I think Merc, with any kind of facelift A45s, are going to have trouble reliably pushing +450hp thru that 2.0L motor.

They must be getting towards the max output for a reliable 2.0L engine with a 'normal service schedule'.

CarWow quoted base price of £50k for the A45s (UK isn't getting standard A45 spec) and others saying with options price is getting on for £60k

Yep mad, and its the PCP interest rates you need to look at as well.

If I go for another new motor again, like the new RS3 in a couple of years, i think I will seriously consider going to an independent like Carwow as opposed to Audi UK.

Independant like CarWow? They are just a portal for signed up dealers. Always a worthwhile starting point along with drivethedeal, coast2coast and leasing etc

Good shout.
Definitely worthwhile looking at non Audi deals next time.
I have unfortunately/fortunately been with Audi UK (same dealer) for my last 4 Audi's.
Fooling myself in to actually thinking Audi would 'look after me'
Ha ha ha ha cough splutter !!!!!

worth keeping them "on their toes", but the main thing is to get a deal you are happy with, as there will always (like anything in life) be a better deal so say

Simply get quotes from the companies mentioned above and take them into your dealer. That’s your starting point and has worked well for me in the past

I really like the look of the A45S - specially the saloon version which I believe is coming here. It has the latest tech, and its fast but its let down by the sound of the engine.

Don’t get me wrong I am astonished by the work AMG did to get 420hp out of a 2 litre engine - its exciting engineering but I can’t go back to a smaller engine...

I imagine the next RS3 will be absolutely brutal if it combines electric motors and that 5 cylinder engine.

Any engine can be blown up and you’re always going to have those that push the limits or just being plain reckless. The rs3 is still yet to mature in the tuner world, so between rogue tuners and reckless owners I’m sure that we are bound to see more examples of blown engines.

These engines are very strong. Iroz running extreme builds on stock internals.

Iroz have been pushing the limits of the engine pretty much since they first got their hands on a DAZA unit and are they are still developing their portfolio of power upgrades. Latest is sleeved DAZA blocks which they are expecting to push to over 1100bhp.

However, there are limits to what you can RELIABLY achieve on stock internals, and then there is the issues with defective factory wrist pins to throw in the mix (secures piston to rod, maybe a rogue batch of parts from factory). Add in poor fuel quality in some countries, owners not running correct ethanol mix on E85 tunes or just plain ignorant idiots who think it's ok to rev the nuts off a cold engine that's made mostly of aluminum........there will be failures. The DAZA engine makes amazing power but it is not bullet proof.
Over the past few months I know of two blown engines (spoke to the owners) both of which were running hybrid turbo's and big torque which ran fast 1/4 mile times but eventually ended up bending rods as the cars were pushed harder and harder.
I have been advised (by MRC) that for DAZA engines running above 600ps and 750nm should have built internals (uprated rods, pistons, bearings) as a safeguard against potential expensive failures.

They also do a 1200 horsepower version and reckon you'll be lucky to get over 5000 miles out of it.

Their cylinder heads are made in the UK, too.

In all seriousness, how much power do we actually need on these cars. You would never be able to exploit it unless on a disused airfield or race track

Nearly 500hp in my old TTRS. Everything I drive now seems tediously slow!

When my RS3 was stock my slowest 0-100km/h was 3.86 sec. That translate to 3.71 sec 0-60mph. I could not believe my eyes when I watched that video showing the RS3's 0-60 at 4.2 sec. That is like 0.5 sec slower compared to mine. I always use 98 Ron fuel (93 Oct) so I was wondering if they could have used 95 Ron (91 oct) in that test?

My fastest 0-100km/h stock at like 3C ambient and with more or less an empty fuel tank was 3.73 sec. That is 0-60 at 3.55 sec.
(measured with dragy)

Have anyone else here clocked 0-60mph on the rs3 with proper fuel that slow?

When he prepared for the launch he puts the car in dynamic, disables esp by pressing the button but then he moves the stick backwards to enable sport mode??
When you set your car to dynamic you automatically set it to sport and you don't need to be pulling on the stick.
Could it be that he switched it from sport to comfort by doing so?
(I am too lazy to go out and check :))

There is definitely something wrong with that launch when you watch if from outside.

Anyway we all know that a stock rs3 is held back by Audi and that you need a tune to free it up. Wonder how a stage 1 or 2 will be on the new A45S? Can a 2.0L 4 cyl keep up with the 5??

I guess drift mode is a bit cool to have but that's nothing I miss :)

I agree, I’ve never seen a 0-60mph that slow, pre FL or FL.

I’m pretty sure it won’t launch if the gearbox is set to D. I’m sure I tried it once and it just made a horrible bang. I haven’t watched the video you’re talking about though.
My rs3 pfl definitely does sub 4s 0-60.

I could bet my bottom dollar it's not going to be even close to comparable tuning wise. Frankly I can imagine the a45s would need to be stage 1 to even be able to compete against the stock fl rs3 which is years old now.. let alone a stage 1 ecu tune only fl rs3 which would walk a stage 3 a45 with ease.

But regardless the previous gen a45 was a very highly strung engine and it's turbo was pushing.. 26 psi ????? And now its 31.5 PSI???!?! Absolute bonkers who would choose to own one out of warranty imo. The car out of factory is already "tuned" very close to the limit.

While there was a competition with a fl a45 and pfl rs3 that has well and truly gone now, rs3 takes the cakes in performance, interior, sound, looks (up to the person) and aftermarket/tuning ability.

This is all imo of course . In saying all of that if VAG didn't make the rs3 or golf r and I needed a hatch then the a45 would be my choice
