After disconnecting the battery RNS-E unit is asking for a pin to be entered:-

This is the first time its done this even though I've disconnected the battery a number of times in the past as well as completely removing the unit.
    After reading this thread :-

I guess I will need to pay for a new pin number.

I phoned the dealers and they quoted £45 to connect the car up to their diagnostic equipment and download a pin from Audi Germany. The eBay link is a better option at only £6.99.

Does this pin request on a fix number of times when the power is lost to the unit or is it random number and I was just lucky it hasn't happened before?

I don't want to have to pay to get a my radio working every time I disconnect the battery.

Once you have the pin, you use that one each time.

The way that Audi was talking it would be a special code each time.
If its just the same code why couldn't they supply it on the plastic same plastic as the Radio Code (what ever use that is used for). :rage:

Is it OEM or retrofit? If OEM, the code should be in the front page of the RNS-e handbook.

It was installed when I ordered the car from the factory. I've had a look through all the handbooks and I couldn't find a printed number.
The only number I have is the one in the plastic key ring which is a letter followed by 6 numbers. I'm guessing it's something to do with the radio code but a pin is only 4 numbers.
I also spoke to Audi Customer Care and they said this request for a Pin is for models made in 2007 and earlier. So they may have supplied a pin for later models.

The pin card is a perforated card on the inside of the front cover of the RNS-e handbook. It's perforated so it can be removed and kept separate from the wallet, so if it gets nicked the code isn't in the car.
If you have a perforated space about the size of a credit card, someone's nicked the code.

The thing is, the car should remember the code of it's 'own' head unit!

I've had a look through the RNS-E Operating Manual (dated 05.2007) and there isn't any indication of a perforated section. I've looked trough all of the owners pack and there is no pin. It looks like the pin is only supplied with cars after 2007.

I can't understand why as security feature to prevent the radio being usable after it is stolen from a car the pin isn't asked for every time the battery is disconnected or the unit is removed.

So it looks like Audi originally supplied the pin then stopped.
Audi Customer Care did say the pin was free it was just the labour time at the Audi Centres is were the cost comes from.

Does your unit ask for a pin every time it is disconnected from the battery?

Has anyone got a 2007 RNS-E unit supplied with pin number?

I've changed to an RNS-e from a concert, so this one asks me for the pin, but if I put the original back in it remembers it straight away.
BTW, I've had occasion to get an Audi pin off Ebay and it worked perfectly.

I supplied the serial number details to an eBay seller (not the same one previously mentioned).
But had an email back saying that the serial number was not found on the database.
    They refunded me strait away.

They suggested either that the serial number was incorrect or had been blocked by Audi or the unit had become faulty.
But they did suggest to try the last four numbers of the serial number as a pin.
    That actually worked. :rockwoot:

I don't know what would have happened if I had gone strait to the dealers and the serial number was not found on the database.
Probably charge me the full price and say the unit is faulty.
