I heard today from a garage that it is possible to reset the ECU by a combination of turning the ignition on and off 5 times (or something like that), this enables the ECU to 'forget' and clear any faults that have been cleared suing vagcom.

Anyone else heard of this method?

Nope,
ECU typically needs software to reset the fault codes/ trims etc.

If the faults have been cleared using VAG-COM then they will be gone. If a fault occurs and causes a CEL (Check Engine Light) then clears typically the CEL will clear but the fault code will be recorded and will remain.
