Replacing iPod integration with AMI

Car has the iPod dock in the glove box, believe this is referred to as 'iPod integration'. Was advertised as AMI ... was not happy when I realised it wasn't and dealer not prepared to pay for it to be retrofit! Anyway its this

Kits available typically include the AMI unit and a loom. Loom is a quad lock to quad lock with a take off cable that I am assuming runs to the AMI for power, CAN bus etc.

As I already have the iPod dock, there has to be power and some form of cable connecting to the RNS-E to control the dock. Any idea of the connector on the back of the iPod dock is the same as that on the AMI?

Would it be asking too much to think I could just unplug the dock and plug in the AMI, code the RNS-E and be finished? If not then the same physical connection that would mean I could alter pin configuration at one end to make it work?

You are aware that you'll need a Mk2 RNS-E to use the AMI dock?

Either way i'd just use the takeover cable most of the kits include, will be the least hassle and disruption.

Have RNS-E mk2. Was retrofit by a previous owner.

Was asking as I could avoid buying a 'kit' and just look for AMI unit if I could use existing cables.

No, you need to fit the proper wiring, the ipod dock currently is hooked into the cd wiring, which is not the same as ami at all, so unplug current & fit new wiring.

This sounds like a Trade Description issue, if you paid for AMI then this is what you should have, was it in writing? I had. Similar issue with an Audi main dealer when asking for ipod to,be fitted to a used car I was buying, they said it was AMI, however I found out this wasn't even possible with he head unit :-?

A contribution at least would be prudent IMO.

I have pointed this out. Advert on website said Audi Music Interface (have a copy of advert on PC).

After a couple of emails saying 'Sorry' and 'we made a mistake', but with no offer to put it right they've gone silent and are just not responding!

I think you have them bang to rights, threaten them with Trading Standards and see what they say then...

I'm assuming this is a used car dealer and not an Audi franchised dealer? Have they offered to take the car back?

It's a well known Audi specialist independent. I have three issues reported within a few days of picking the car up (after 3 week wait for them to fix gearbox).

- Doesn't have the AMI
- The RNS-E was retrofit and so car has wrong antenna and poor radio reception
- Aux belt squeals

Last email (a week ago) they offered to have car in and fix the latter two, but just say 'mistakes unfortunately happen' etc about the AMI. Have replied twice since but nothing back. Prefer to keep in email so have proof of conversation.

Problem is they are a two hour round trip away and my wife is now 4 days overdue with baby #2, so getting the car back to them is not easy, then having to go back to pick it up when done!

I already had to code the RNS-E properly, whoever fitted it just dumped it in by the look of it (was set up for a LHD, no BOSE, no iPod and was giving an incorrect coding error on VCDS). I could retrofit the correct antenna and AMI in less time than it takes to drive to their workshop!

But those items are expensive and should've been fitted to the car as described, to simply say that's a mistake and leaving you to pay for the option you've already paid for is not on. call your local Trading Standards and have a chat, hey tend to be very helpful ;-)

Giving dealer a chance to resolve first before going the TS route. Once you start down that path you tend to ruin the relationship with the garage!

I'm suggesting you call them for advice, that way you know where you stand when you speak to the dealer

Had a response, they are still prepared to fix the antennae and the squeal, however their official line on the iPod v AMI issue is "As your car already has a functioning IPOD connector we would not pay for an alternative."

To be fair they have offered me a courtesy car while they fix the other issues and have also offered to have my car delivered back to me once fixed (which makes life a lot easier!). Would just be about £250-£300 out of pocket on the AMI, as I am sure I could prob flog the iPod control for £50-£100.

As long as you are happy, that's the important thing, and one less thing to worry about with the imminent arrival of your new baby.

Tell them if they don't retrofit what was advertised then you'll be returning the car and asking for a full refund. You are well within your rights to do this. See if they call your bluff.

The fact they say it has the iPod integration and as such, not prepared to contribute is shocking. It's a totally different hook up. Your current one is basically a glorified cd changer and nothing like AMI.

Agreed... You do have to strap on the cojones but hopefully they would rather pay for the retrofit then lose all that money that they already have in their bank account.

Have a quick scout round, I'm sure there will be something as a just in case.
