Pull straight out. It’s on a square clip, there’s a fair chance part of the clip will break. Doesn’t really make a difference as it’s a tight fit anyway

Might be able to take the backing and internals off to get to the shaft. I might have an old one in the loft I can photograph for you to see the clips

Are you taking the whole thing apart? Im curious to see how hard is it to get to circuit board with LED's on it. My parking lights led on the switch sometimes wont light up, sometimes flickers, so i thought i should try to reflow the joint but gotta get the thing apart first :/

No just wanted the dial out but did take another apart and that wasn’t too back just the 3 screws on the back then it comes out in layers

Push the dial in then twist to the right. This will retract some little locking teeth and the whole unit should pull out. Ignore my post sorry - being a dikc and can’t delete - sorry!

I’d like to change the dull grey one for one with the silver trim to match the vents etc just struggling g to find one to be honest
Yes it is very stiff. Use an old cloth to protect it and use a pair of large pliers to grip it. FYI there are nicer ones that you can refit. The facelift 8P ones are the same as the TT MK2, and the facelift TT has gloss black and alu ones. I fitted this to my prefacelift TT

we all like some help these days but if you dont know then just move on. You can really damage parts by removing them if you are not sure how to do it. German engineers are pretty damn good with install and removal. I'd hate to see the panel damaged by blunt force trauma to the switch

What are you talking about? In his post he is clearly asking how to remove the knob from the main unit. He already has the unit removed from the car...

as mt-v6 has said, thats to take the switch unit out (image). there isnt an official "german engineer" method of taking off the knob, which is what is being asked in the thread.

the first line of your post is looking very ironic right about now.

Then if it's just straight hard pull, why even remove the whole panel. Just grab a cloth and couple of pliers and hard pull! Am I wrong? Question: I purchased a TT one with my vehicle's exact specs as @Ash187 listed in another thread. Fits exactly my A3 (hallogen lights etc) Can I swap panels or am I goin to have problems, so just go for the switch hard pull?

I'd remove it from the car first as the force required to pull the knob off will be greater than that holding the switch unit in place and you might break the clips

If you have the right TT switch just swap the whole thing over, that's a lot easier!

Here we go; I have the 2 units, yea I know mine is LDH and the one I bought is RHD, but I didn't find a fl LHD, so my question is do I pull hard from the position of the prefl (right) or the fl (left) as shown in the pic? Is it even possible to remove the chrome trim before pulling, to prevent it from getting damaged? Thanks in advance!

HELP!! After huge efforts and unfortunately some scratches I managed to fit the chrome switch into my prefl panel. As you see in the first pic is the removal of the prefl switch which went smoothly, instead the chrome one had to break in one piece, so it made things more difficult. Even so, in the next two pics you can see the position front and back at the same time. I pushed the middle plastic both clockwise and counter-clockwise but when it was inside the red plastic, it wouldnt move at all! What am I missing here? Please help, my brain is starting to melt! Couldnt expect this mod to be such a PITA!! Thanks in advance!!

I'm not sure I follow what the problem is. Which part is broken? The white piece the knob clips on to? If so, can you use the non-broken one as I think they are all the same

As I tested, the problem was indeed on some broken parts inside that wouldn't let switch move. So I decided to use the other set of parts that had been removed unharmed after the hard pull. Had to..burn out (literally lol!) the thick white plastic (couldn't be removed with pliers!) that was stuck on the back of chrome switch, in order to clip it on the white plastic that was properly removed outta prefl panel. Unfortunately the other switch is now inusable, thus in perfect condition. Mine tho is perfectly functional! Gone too far but finally job's done!
