Hi there,
just a quick post about remedial work done to my A6 from new to date, as well as some of the issues I've been haing lately and what I've done / spent to try to resolve, where I am now?

It kinda lists some of the issues I've been having, how I've addressed them etc, re servicing, fuel filters, tandem pumps / intank lift pumps, brakes & discs and more...

You may find it interesting, hopefully helpful to someone?

Remedial work to my A6

Thanks for looking

Jim

Just confused by some of the pricing, were they fitted?

Reason I ask is that new glows and filter for my 3.0TDi are less than £100 delivered.

I'd not do the plugs myself (no experience with diesels) but have the tools to do the fuel filter.

Hey Marky, had the glowplugs and the filter done by Audi

hope that clarifies the price...lol

The juddering seems to have disappeared mate, very pleased & relieved....lol

Of course if I let it get to stall speeds I'm sure I could recreate it, but not going down that route.

I'm really in 2 minds about the MAF sensor though.....I spoke to one of my contacts at the Audi dealers in the parts dept and he says they've replaced quite a few ( checked stock and they have decent numbers available....always a tell tale sign )
But..... the Audi tech today seems to think my MAF is within spec and it won't make any difference?

I've read and read / re read many posts on the topic and it seems that a MAF isn't necessarily good or bad, but can weaken, start to fail over time, yet still be within the parameters it should be. Obviously this means it won't be setting any CEL / MIL but may still be causing issues as recognised by the driver!!

At just nearing 102k miles I'm inclined to replace if it will help to smooth things out, but don't wanna throw money away if I don't have to.....If she needs it she'll get it basically, but I'd be annoyed at the expenditure if it doesn't make any difference.

The trouble is I'm getting conflicting info...

Jim yes entirely

When considering a Westfalia towbar last year for fitting a bikerack Audi quoted me an eyewatering £1100+VAT for the towbar alone!:wtf:

Went to a place called Brittania towbars & roofboxes who supplied and fitted the towbar/bikerack and lit number plate board for £573 inc...(bar alone would have been £292 inc) they admitted that they did all of Bristol Audi's towbars.:whistle2:

So I figured with Audi you were paying the 400% mark-up as effectively forking out 'software engineer' prices even for basic mechanical work that required no real skill and was beneath them

Hi there,
I do know where you're coming from, but then sometimes they can be really reasonable on certain parts....?

See below a link to ta thread I made regarding dealers prices....The parts were foglight housings and turned out to be wayyy lower than peoples expectations.

Dealer prices - reasonable or wayy tooo much ??

To be fair, sometimes though they really milk it & then some

maf is almost a service part, my passat had 2 new ones in the 186k i had it

Thanks Nova......Its kinda my way of thinking too........I'm sure I read somewhere of a serviceable lifespan of around 100k - 150k

Have you replaced your tandem pump on your Audi?
Have you been advised to replace it?
Does your car suffer from hesitation, poor starting ( fuel run back ) or similar hard starts in the morning?

I see the internet littered with posts on this subject on Audi's and VW's and am trying to build a picture of how many, where, what models etc?

Please see below....

Audi have recomended a intank lift pump and or Tandem pump to help cure the issues.
Audi Technik today confirmed that there does seem to be low pressure and that the tandem pump seems to be failing
aargh4.gif

Seriously ***??
I had mine replaced under warranty on 05/08/2009 at 59k miles and now at 23/04/2013 and 102k miles I need another one!!

Are these parts made of chocolate??

Audi Technik have quoted £422.62 to replace tandem pump and see where it is from there.

Audi are looking at replacing tandem pump, intank lift pump, injector seals, various nuts & bolts + labour at, wait for it........£1460.00
zx11.gif

I have a funny feeling that there will be a phone call to Audi in my very near future

Replacing tandem pumps every 2-3 years or 40k - 50k miles........I don't think so!!

If you have any of these or similar issues with your vehicle and have been advised to replace the lift pump or tandem pump, or have already done so I'd appreciate input here so I can build a picture

Personally, I think we're paying for a poor design feature here, along the lines of the VW corrosion on the wings etc, but without the warranty to back it up...Thats not to say we need to take it lying down.

.........

Hi all,
well as stated, I made the call to Audi customer services and we had a nice long chat about my issues a few days ago.

They said that they would have to check with the dealership and would get back to me later that day, but they never did. I was busy with work and a few other things, one being my 17 yr old son ( teaching him to drive and getting ready for his test )

Just for the record, he passed first time yesterday, has his own car and now insured to drive>>>proud father
approve.gif

He's working as a tyre fitter apprentice but getting pretty poor wages....The BIG bonus also yesterday was that he got a call from Kwik Fit to attend an interview in 45 mins time, he went, got the job and starts in a week or so time & DOUBLES his salary
biglaugh.gif

WHAT A DAY!!

As you can see I was busy so my return call to Audi had slipped but I was prepared to call them today on this.

I didn't need to bother, as they called me around 10 minutes ago, with their findings................

Audi have agreed to take my car in & replace the tendem pump, intank lift pump, injector seals and any other necessary related work
The WHOLE complete job will be done, bearing in mind Audi quoted me £1460, for.....wait for it.......wait for it........

I'm more than a little pleased as you might guess....lol

Albeit my car has been serviced regularly, warranty issues etc taken care of there too, but.....It also goes to show what a well timed phone call to customer services & a well thought out plan of attack combined with detailed information can help to achieve.

EDIT - Audi just called, car booked on for next Wednesday with courtesy car to get the work completed

On the back of my recent good news I have made a few phone calls today and decided to get new tyres for the rear and a wheels refurbishment of all 4.

I'll sell the part worn Conti's approx 3mm fronts and 4mm rears on Ebays or Gumtree for a few ££ and get something back that way.

Going to National Tyres in Stirling later today to collect 2 off Barum Bravuris 2 255x35x19 96Y XL tyres.
I won't get the fitted, as the wheel refurbishment specialists will do it when they refurb the wheels on Monday

Car booked into The Wheel Specialists on Monday morning for ALL 4 wheels to be refurbed.
In fairness only 1 has a slightly nasty scrape along the edge from an encounter with a kerb:banghead: ( really mad at myself ) and another one has a few small nicks, nothing major though.
The other two are pretty ok to be fair although have a few slight marks from wheel removal, but to rule our any colour deviation, I'll just get all 4 done.

See below totals for remedial work done or about to be completed
Fuel filter & glowplugs £270.00
Pads & discs all round, brake fluid change & collant flush £465.00
Air filter £20.00
2 x diagnostics £120.00
Front wheel bearing £194.93
Intank lift pump, tandem pump, injector seals etc £1460.00
2 new tyres £300.00
Wheels refurbished £270.00
Total = £3099.93

Hopefully, she should be good for another little while :arco:

I've just received some Poorboys Blackhole and Nattys Blue wax so she'll be getting washed / cleaned, then Blackhole applied followed by maybe 2 coats of wax to shine, shine, shine
Also some Autoglym vinyly & rubber as I'd ran out so the interior, door shuts etc etc will get a going over as well as all locks / hinges etc getting the white grease treatment which has also just arrived

Thanks Gup, well pleased & wanted to share of course.

I hope it may help one or two others down the road, who knows?

Well, it was time to give the A7 back today unfortunately, but on the plus side it meant I got my baby back after all the work Audi did, see report word for word as follows......

"Free of charge warranty invoice - Checked car for fuel contaminated, traced fault to tandem pump seals leaking internally, removed and replaced tandem pump, filter, all injector seals, tank lift pump, cleaned all fuel injectors using ultrasonic bath, reassembled, add fresh fuel, tested All ok."

I can report that afterwards she felt like she had a new lease of life, like the car was lighter almost, more responsive & eager......Nice job Audi

Another plus was that I went in with around a little over a quarter tank of fuel and Audi topped her up to the top when the refilled her after the clean out
beerchug.gif

I tested her along the motorway on the way home, an improvement all round.....Thanks Audi

The other plus today was getting to meet a local member from Audi Sport who has recently joined our ranks ( Aly )

Really cool to meet him and put a face to the name, and see his lovely A6......with some really cool mods, loved the
reversing camera.
The blacked out grill really made for a mean look in my rear view too......see pics below.

I am thinking at 6 years and 102k miles that the suspension, shocks, bushes, tie rods etc could do with freshening up although I have no issues in that dept yet to speak of.......maybe in the near future we'll see.

Thats about the end of my story, for now, I hope.

In the meantime I have some Poorboys Blackhole and some Natty's blue paste wax waiting for a nice day and a spare few hours......she'll be getting washed, clayed and treated to bring the shine out a little more.

Thanks for looking

Front tyres fitted and all 4 wheels refurbed.........30/04/2013

Interior re trim done in Brushed Aluminium as per this thread...

Interior re trim II

As soon as the weather clears up, it'll be washed & dried, given 2 coats of Poorboys Blackhole, followed by 2 coats of Nattys blue paste wax with the interior door cards / dash etc treated to AutoGlym Vinyl & Rubber

20/05/2013
Well, spent a pleasant few hours today detailing my car, washed n dried, then copious amounts of Poorboys Blaxckhole applied. Once this was buffed to a high shine it was covered with Nattys Blue paste wax to seal in the shine.

Took more than a few hours and my arm is hanging off, but, she looks good.......Thats the good news.....
See pics below

The bad news??

Can't believe it looks like my AC compressor has failed!!

Local AC scpecialist "KlimaKool" reckons I'm looking at...

Compressor, High pressure sensor, labour + re gas at around £725 mark all in

A6 C6 Air Con issues

Lol, if its not one thing its another at the moment

19/08/2013
Ok so a couple of minor issues recently.........

1. several fixings for inner wheel well liner missing.....annoying!
2. Front parking sensor issue.....really annoying!!
3. drivers door switch still causing issues....slightly annoying.

Was in Stirling the other day anyway so popped in to Audi and chatted with Gary there......he got the 4 that I needed and even fitted them for me ( in the rain..lol ) he's a star and only cost a few £

The front parking sensor issue - its working fine...BUT...its slipped into the bumper slightly so is out of alignment. Essentially anytime the parking sensors are activated its reading the bumper before anything else, so its basically inop.
I called at a local bodyshop I know for them to check it out for me, they took off the number plate plinth to gain access and it looks like there's a little tab missing off the side of the sensor where it locates into the frame.

I have a choice of spending many pennies and buying a new one or.......The guy used a tie wrap to secure it in place and replaced the plinth and its solid in place with no issues and working fine. Tested the system front n rear and all is well as it should be, £10 to the guy to buy a couple of beers and everyone's happy.

Just the driver side door switch....As mentioned previously, everything works fine, except, the drivers window switch...It will lower and raise the window fine, it will raise the window with one shot press, but will not lower the window with one shot, it needs to be held.....a slight annoyance, but one I really need to get around to fixing.

Just cleaned the interior, vaccuumed thoroughly, plastics got the Autoglym vinyl & rubber treatment, let off another AC bomb by Comma....She'll be getting a good wash n clean on the exterior in the next day or so, other than that she's pretty ok.

28/08/2013
Ok so I've been having a problem with some noises coming from the front passenger wheel area......These noises seem to me to be like a "tinkling" sound, like 2 pieces of thin metal being banged together.

Its been there a little while as I haven't had time to get around to it ( after first checking the wheel wasn't going to fall off obviously...lol )

My thoughts have ranged from a broken spring perhaps? Maybe the dust shield was loose?
Could it be that the brake pads are rattling?

Bit the bullet today and took it into my sons garage where they put it up on the ramp and checked for me but could find nothing!!

As I was just around the corner from the Audi Indy I have used several times I took it there and explained the problem.........they seem to think worn drop links could be causing this?

Anyhow at 107k miles I think the originals have lasted well, so I'm booked in for Monday am to get both sides changed out, for around £100 or so.

Whilst there, I've asked them to do a check around to see if there are any other issues that may be causing this, also to replace a rubber grommet on the inner wheel well liner ( access to the headlamps etc I believe ) as well as 2 other liner fixings recently lost that need replaced.

I'm hopeful that the drop link replacements cure the issue, but we'll see I guess..........Obviously I'll report back

Had the car in yesterday, just got it back today as there was a supply issue with the top door hinge coming in on time. This wasn't an issue as it gave them more time to check / resolve my battery issues.

The car was put onto a battery charger / maintainer overnight and restored to full health, with any codes etc being removed from the battery maintenance manager

Drivers door switchpack faulty, one shot raising of window inop, needs replacing DONE
Drivers door top hinge failing causing door to drop, needs replacing DONE
110kk approx thoughts on manual gearbox fluid change DONE
Battery failing, low level warnings please check. DONE
Real coil spring replacement O/S - DONE

Total £517.00

All good
