Evening chap, you're not doing anything wrong, i suspect it is maybe because a lot of owners stick with the OE HU's or go with something more specific like apple play units from alpine, pioneer etc.
From previous similar threads these types of units you have mentioned did have issues that were a bit perplexing for the owners, some had great success but others just gave up.
Sorry I can't help you more as I have always steered clear of them so can't really give any guidance, I'm sure someone will be along soon with some more useful help.
You may have to wait a while though.
