Has anyone here recharged their a/c unit themselves?

Mine is currently in need of a regas, but I am loath to pay as it looks fairly simple to do.

My question is a two parter.
1. I assume the relevant valve is located on the lower left side of the engine bay near the fuel filter?
2. Does the car need to be programmed in any way, once the a/c is recharged with refrigerant?

I found a local VAG specialist and was £35 as I had disconnected the aircon when I changed my intercooler.

It’s £30-£40, why would you want/need to diy?

If you need to regas then you probably have a leak. A garage would check that not just top up. A diy charge wouldn’t last long if that’s the case.

It's a simple job if you have the right equipment costing thousands of pounds. Don't be fooled by the Halfords DIY kits + you have to make sure you put the correct gas in.

The machine takes all the old gas and oil out and applies a vacuum to test for leaks before filling with fresh oil and gas.

Kwik fit take £50 as far as I am aware and don't charge you if it doesn't give 10 deg c cooler at the vent. Some places may be a bit cheaper.

Just put a new aircon pump on my Skoda VRS so will be getting it recharged tomorrow hopefully.

Not correct...i had 2 cars regassed this week and neither had leaks.

Where did it go then? The only way to lose refrigerant is for it to leak. Normally by the way of perished seals when the air con isn’t used often enough to lubricate them.

Audi recommend you get their cars regased every 2 years.

Audi actually quote an acceptable rate of loss for air on gas. I forget, but it was less than the amount of I had lost.

I had the a/c inspected and recharged by my local indy. Dealer (indy) who sold me the car covered the cost.
