Cars been in for warranty coolant leak today.

When I picked it up they said there’s been a recall issued on Friday for gearbox. Apparently a software update to do with a bolt that may come lose on the gearbox damaging it. Weird that software update can resolve a physical issue but ok…wouldn’t let me take the full info so will try and get it when it goes back to sort it.

It’s a 2017 S3 Saloon.

Will this be a full software update or just the control unit?

That’s interesting. Mine was in for a service a few weeks ago and it never got that.

Are you in a 17 S3?

Seems odd to me that they won’t give you the full information relating to a recall on your car!

The guy said to me it’s a software update and if the software update doesn’t take then it needs a physical intervention I think. It sounded really odd but he didn’t really seem to know himself.

Mine is booked in for the 19th for a few days to sort this and my faulty water pump.

will keep an eye on it. Mines 2018 s3 with 34k so if anything was to fall off it should have done by now

Mines 2017 with 39k. Does seem strange that’s it’s been released at this late stage. I wonder how long it would have taken someone to contact me about it should it not have been in for work anyway.

2016 S3 with 34k. Its booked in for service items and MOT on Monday, they sent the Job Card through on email and its listed at the bottom. Nothing mentioned before this.

It’s probably described as a Campaign as opposed to a safety recall in which case it wouldn’t appear on the Gov website

My car was in for an mot today and 34L4 was on the job card. On collection they said my car was fine and didn't have any issue with the gearbox. They had the car all day so wonder if takes a while to check.

I find this very interesting!! I just got stung with zero help from Audi for my 2017 S3 (24k miles) gearbox to the tune of £7k! Something came loose in gearbox and caused a hole in the casing.. All my research led to a definite issue with the facelift gearboxes but I was met with total disregard and BS from Aberdeen Audi.. This was just last month and I know of another 57 plate bought up here with identical issue

I would take the campaign number above and get them to look it up and see if it’s related.
then take it to Audi Cs and say it was an inherent fault that shouldn’t have costed you £7k.
a car with that little mileage shouldn’t blow a gearbox unless it’s tuned.

Update from Audi uk this am confirmed the recall is directly related to bolts coming off the hydraulic pump causing internal damage to the gearbox! Opened a new car case with Audi Uk and motor ombudsman case also updated with this recall info..

sounds like it’s going the right direction.
more worrying is how a software update fix hardware problem and when is this ticking time bomb gonna explode.
same thing as the waterpump/thermostat leaking. Inherent fault and will cost around £1k if it goes outside warranty.

I was talking to a mate about this as hes a vag specialist before semi-retirement and he said the most likely thing that software update can do to save the gearbox blowing up is limit power/torque or reduce power/torque from the engine otherwise there’s no way they can fix a hardware problem with a software patch.
worrying thing for me is the patch reduce power so instead of having 310ps and 400nm we get 280ps and 350nm which isn’t right.
will be interesting to see someone dyno their car after the patch.

Ok I’ve been reading about this over on the golf r forum and gleaned a bit of info. It affects the DQ 381 DSG box and they seem to be recalling the ‘17/18 model years at the moment and had the following details about what is being done.

The issue seems to be with an oil pump shaft within the 'start/stop' system that can break without warning and destroy the transmission.
- The software update is to add diagnostic checks on the status of the pump and flag an issue before it causes anything terminal.

I’m still waiting to hear from Audi UK through Facebook about mine although they have contacted me to ask what my registration number is.

I’ve not been given any explanation of what happened but I have the 381 gearbox … Was told any investigation was to be funded by myself yet the part is an ‘ exchange part ‘ and it’s been sent back to factory and I’m not allowed any information on what they find …

Mine was in for 2 weeks following this update.

It was booked in for a week to do the update and repair small bit of damage to my bumper. At the end of the week they called and extended it to 2 due to bumper repair taking longer. I wonder if they had to do more work on the gearbox though…

When I went to pick it up they had broken a part of my bumper during the repair and it’s now due to be fixed and ready by Friday, 3 weeks later…

Surely we should be entitled to know what’s been done to our cars?

Audi UK have been in touch and my car needs to be booked in with my local dealer so I’ll give them a call and organise this.
My car is a 2016 66 plate fl S3 with the 7 speed DQ381 DSG gearbox and approximately 38k miles. Hopefully there’s nothing wrong as I’d rather it didn’t need to be pulled apart. Fingers crossed.

Aberdeen Audi confirmed my gearbox suffered the exact issue regarding the recall but I’m now waiting to see if it will be covered as the repair was done a week before the recall came out Gearbox went in July , surely can’t weasel out of it…

Good luck and hopefully they’ll cover all of your costs, if the fault was discovered during the recall it would have been covered and they must have known about this a while ago to decide on the recall.

Just booked mine in after reading this thread. 66 plate S3. What I am intrigued to know is what Audi is saying if this update then flags the fluid pump error on the gearbox, as I'm out of warranty could be in for a big repair bill but because we didn't have this software monitor in place whilst in warranty we'd never know if the issue has been present during that time.
