I am looking at replacing all four tie arms on the rear of my S3, can anybody tell me if it is necessary to clamp, or remove the springs to do the job? I have searched, but not been able to find a definitive answer, thanks in advance.

no need to.

just make sure you remove brake lines/plug & headlight leveller so nothing breaks & support the trailing arm so it doesn't drop too low if removing both tie arms

I think the anti roll bar, damper/insert and drop link will support the hub.
Let us know how you get on, I still may do my upper tie bars at some point.
I just moved the calipers out the way to undo and push out the upper rose joints, and press in the new ones.

Good luck

have a rubber mallet handy too :) makes it much easier getting these out/in
