can anyone help? I have a 1.6 FSi Sport and have just just had 40k major service + cambelt change. In the last two weeks I have noticed a rattling noise coming from the underside of the engine roughly between 2k and 3k revs whether staionary or moving. I have had the plastic shrouds off and there are no noticable loose items. I got my missus to rev the engine while I was under it and the rattle sounded like it was coming from the sump area......any ideas???

No mark, there is nothing loose outside of the engine casing......this was my first thoughts. it does sound internal. Have been looking at various sites tonite and it could be noisy hydraulic tappets?? Still not 100pc sure tho...thanks for your interest mate!!

Tappets are up top.

Did Audi change the waterpump and tensioners while they were in there? As it could be tensioner rattle maybe

hmmm, they didn't touch the water pump so yup that is one option that it could be i guess.....I have booked it in to an independant audi specialist for the end of week will keep y'all posted.
I've had a shed load a different cars in my time and have never experienced a noise like this before especially with miles so low, guess thats why i am so baffled....and a little annoyed that I have handed over decent sponds for a supposedily quality car which I imagined would be trouble free.........

Had the car looked at and the mechanic stated it was the belt tensioner. It has now been repaired. Phew........

Glad you got it sorted:icon_thumright:

Thanks Unkle......I have now sold the A2 privately so am no longer an Audi owner. Its a relief really, although i loved the prestige and the quality, I wasn't happy when there was a potential problem arising because the dealership labour is well overpriced. The other big issue I had was the fact that I was unable to buy any sort of workshop manual for it, I could never even begin to investigate any issues myself without paying for an expert opinion. Rest assured I wont be buying another one.:end_of_discction:
