I've heard most K04 do this upon start up, from Ed30 to S3.
I have a rattle on start up too, buts its definitely a heat-shield rattling and its only literally upon turn over and i wouldn't say it lasts for seconds, its probably 1 second and no more.
If it continues to rattle, perhaps you are starting to have a DMF problem, usually that would stay apparent, and not just last 3 seconds or so, so my money isnt on that, but I wouldn't rule it out judging by age of vehicle and average mileage.
My average is 24mpg, on a good run AC on, 29mpg +No AC, 33mpg.
Lowest I've read over a journey is 5.9mpg, the day i picked it up....Picture to prove somewhere deep in my iphone...

Could be dmf. My brother has this on his car. Put it in 1st gear with the hand break on and then ease the clutch till it starts to bite. If the rattle gets worse then it is most likely the dmf
i find my air-con makes a funny noise for 3-4 sec on start up, just assumed its pressuring up, then go's. but these engines do seem noisy on tick over.
They do have loud injectors, Audi surely could have made these engines sound good.

Only around 5-6 hours, from when I finish work at 4am to when I get up around 11-12 ish,
It's very easy to go through a tank of fuel in these if you are giving it some Jack.
They run on £5 notes really, certainly nothing like your last car.
Still, I'm happy burning fivers for the fun I have when I do it.

Mine has a rattle on start up and it's going in to audi for a service on Friday and have asked them to have a look at it. I park on a slope could this be causing it
The tfsi is great at what it does, it's efficient (ish), powerful and tuneable but it does sound pants from both the front and the back
Maybe, I suppose it depends on whether you park nose up or down, I could be talking
complete garbage but it's a theory I've come up with that oil drains away if you park
nose up.
Yes I do, ever night, it's not a massive slope but its a slope never the less
going to get audi to give the car a check up before the warranty runs out just to be safeOnly now I'm getting into it, i've been mummying it since i've had it but opened the taps a couple if time recently and it certainly does put a smile on my face

I find the engine has no grunt, I like the sound from the back though
The S3 needs a remap to bring it to life.
If you remember that the stock engine turns out around 260bhp and has 1500kgs to pull around that's half the answer and then consider that the same engine can turn out 440bhp without an internal rebuild,then you see why it may feel a bit lacking.
Compared to what you're used to (and I was used to) no it doesn't.
The thing is you're comparing chalk with cheese.
As you know the Fab was pulling as hard as it could from just over 2000rpm
and as you now know, in stock tune these don't pull their hardest until about
4000rpm. Just about where the fab was running out of puff these are just getting
into their stride. It will just take a bit of time to making the adjustment and
doing all your 'playing' in a higher rev range.
As much as I'd love some more power I don't want things to start going wrong :/ I fiddled with my fabia and it just cost me a fortune and went down hill, the only thing I'd like from my s3 is turbo flutter but don't know how to get it, it already makes a blow off noise but I think that's standard is it? :/

The fluttering noise is when the compressor is run near its limits.
I think the S3 engine is actually very reliable and up to 360bhp you don't really need to worry.
A Stg1 remap would give you an extra 50bhp and no added worries.
Very similar sound to a dump valve when you lift off? :/ perhaps it's a boost leak and maybe that could explain fuel usage, I think I'll take it into audi for a check up just to be safe.

It's called several things but the cause is the same.
The TFSi isn't like old school turbo engines that whistle and snort so you won't get much of that.
I found the s3 pretty rubbish until stage 2+.
It's fast at the 360 odd bhp mark although I still find it a bit dull and civilised

The S3s biggest problem is weight.
It's 1500kgs and with stock power it's only about 180bhp/tonne.
We reckon mines about 340bhp/tonne now and hopefully more to come soon.
My old Escort Cosworth managed that power/weight with only 380bhp.
Fair play I'd probably end up in a hedge with that power and banned from driving more than likely, what's your fuel consumption like?
I'm only 20 and had an absolute tit full of making cars faster already lol so decided to buy a car that's fast enough for me as it is and keep it until I can afford something bigger and better and once insurance prices allow me to. The s3 is ridiculous but just got a temporary policy until I'm 21 and going to see then if it gets any cheaper. -_-
I think the furthest I'd go with my s3 is possibly a induction kit, depending in extra fuel use to nicer sound/preformance ratio, and maybe a milltek cat back but not sure as I find the s3 engines sound quite crap and don't have any grunt to them, but maybe that's just me

Mine can do as much as 30mpg on the morning chug into work and much less when pushed but nowhere near the Escort's minimum of 5mpg.
That's a new efficient turbo Vs an old rally tuned ALS turbo. Lol.
A Stg1 map plus induction kit will give yours a surprising amount of extra torque and make it a lot easier to drive.
Before I came here my car was going to remain stock.....that's a tale worth remembering!

Well I decided to park ex my 200bhp fabia tdi and get something that was faster and standard as the fabia was having a few problems, so I ended up with an s3 but at least with the fabia I could be flat out everywhere and still only use a tank a week :/

gets new ideas into your head and then it's all down hill my plan is to drive around in this for a few years and then when I have a tidy job/guaranteed full time job I'll get something a bit nuts and tune it a little 30mpg? I have to drive like an absolute fart to get those stats
doesn't help with the old lead foot syndrome :giggle.

30mpg is easy enough with the huge amount of torque whereas the stock engine needs a fair amount of revs to achieve the same.
Equally true that mpg can be awful if you live on the loud pedal but that's increasingly difficult with all the cameras around.

I remapped my fabia and everything went wrong from there on, :/ where's best to get an s3 mapped so its reliable and there won't be any chance of anything going wrong?

The S3 engine is pretty robust and rarely breaks unless you do something daft or don't service things like the cam follower regularly.
You can never guarantee even a stock engine against failures but very few of us have had real trouble.
I can only recommend those I actually know or have feedback on and obviously my first choice is going to be AMDTuning in Essex who made my car what it is today.
They're worth a journey even if they aren't near.
If you're well up country then there are a number of other people that can provide good feedback on their choices.
Always go with a company that has been recommended and knows what they're doing.
Revo, Shark and APR seem to be favourites.
Shark have the same reputation here as they do on Brisky.
Personally I'm looking to have mine done at either APR or Shark.
You'll break the 300bhp barrier on these with ease with a stage 1 map.
I think keeping the torque figures sensible is the key to reliability.
The engine can take loads but the clutch can't.
