I have just had a number of quotes from the insurers listed on this forum, all of which claim to have some cracking deals, discounts etc. yeah right
Im 50 this year, have 10yrs plus ncb
no accidents or convictions, standard car etc
I like to pay monthly for my insurance. sky want £680.00 for the year. chris knott want £545.00 for the year and prestige want £665.00
I looked on line and thought I'd try admiral, they came back at £37.00 p/m

then just of out curiosity I went on money supermarket and got it for £20.00 per month with hastings direct. that's fully comp, protected ncb, personal accident, key cover, windscreen cover, European cover, legal cover and guaranteed repairs and only has an excess of £200.00

I think the others need to up their game

Never had any luck with the insurers on here either...

Typically pay about £300/£350 for my insurance and got quotes upwards from £600 from the ones I've tried on here.
Appreciate the level of cover might of been better than the likes of Admiral or DirectLine, but are they worth an extra £300....? Not so sure...

I was impressed by the hastings quote. to be honest I was happy at the admiral quote of £37.00 p/m, but curiosity got the better of me. I don't usually do the comparison sites as I've found they don't necessarily give the best price/cover. the hastings site let me fine tune everything. the bog standard fully comp was only £189.00 for the year as a one of payment, but I wanted it over 12 months, and added windscreen + legal cover.

ive had previous experience with sky when insuring a Scooby and more recently my vec gsi, its amazing how they come down in price when you play one against another, but today they weren't budging.

Don't mean to pry, but isn't the interest on paying monthly pretty horrendous...?

What about interest free credit card and pay it off monthly that way?

Could do i suppose. I just like to do things as ive always done. I dont like change. With regards to extra cost i accept thats part of paying monthly. Over the year it works out at £26.00 extra. But id sooner do it that way.

Fair dos!

Never like to give them more money than I have to, but that's just me :p

Would be good if one of the representatives come onto this thread to explain, potentially, what their service provides above the typical admiral quote, perhaps justifying the extra cost...

I quite aggree. I think the top and bottom of it is that they target car clubs/ forums in particular modified cars. The modified scene is growing all the time particularly with youngsters who have barely left school. My lad is 28 and into modified old fords. He regularly speaks to lads with st fiestas, civics all tge usual hot hatch stuff thats been mapped or turbo'd and putting out 350bhp plus. I think theyre the main targted market as insurance is so expensive. What is annoying is when these companies use forums like this claiming to save you hundreds when in reality they may give a saving to 1 in 20. I think they just think people will think they are cheap when claiming 20% discount. 20% off what?

Makes sense!

Basically you are subsiding the higher risk insurance premiums from younger chaps and their max power motors, which the typical insurer either refuses, or charges such high amounts that it makes it daft to even consider...!

However you look at it insurers have your pants down everytime. You cant not have it and they win everytime.
take your average person whos fully insurered then gets hit by an unisured driver. If they havent paid the additional premium covering for a hit from someone uninsured, they claim through no fault of their own then get penalised having made a claim. I had a chip on my windscreen some yrs ago. Fully comp with protected ncb. Had a winscreen firm out to sort the chip. You guessed it premium went up as it was considered a claim even though my ncb was protected. Shafted every way

Agreed, I always disclose everything I can and be as honest as possible because I know they will use anything to get out of paying.

What good is saving £50 on my premium by lying if I end up not getting a pay out that would potentially cover me for thousands....

I find it crazy the amount of people that don't declare modifications for the same reason. One thats always got me is DPF removal. Surely you cant tell the insurers because the car is technically not road legal...? Such a massive risk if the insurers don't pay out. Would literally leave you bankrupt.

Guess its unlikely they will spot it, but still...

Doubled edged sword. Not only a none payout but to add salt to the wound potentially a no insurance if police involved. Thats 6 points, a fine and disclosing itfor the next 5yrs. Bare in mind everything is on the mib data base. All insurers share the ssme info.
never mind i get a free bus pass in 10 yrs time.

Ha!

I've recently joined the train to London commute gang, so lucky if I get to drive my S5 more than 50miles a week...
Makes me wonder if its really worth having given the costs involved...guess the fuel bill isn't something I am concerned about, which is good since I rarely average 20MPG when I drive it now!

I'd have a word with Chris Knott again. My 2008 S3 costs me £633 with me paying monthly and i'm 34 with 6 points and I had a accident the year before. Fully comp I got as well. Think I had 8 years ncb. Yours should be a lot cheaper then mine

Maybe your post code or the car is a big factor? I remember years ago when I had a mini JCW and Barclays tripled my renewal and when I asked why they said a lot of these cars in your area have been written off so there a bigger risk to insure?? Sounded like BS to me but you never know

admiral great for us, multicar - 308 for £200 a year, and A6 for £240

We currently sign up about 4 in 10 quotes across both modified AND standard cars. Please give us a call in the mix.

I already rang chris knott as part of my initial phone round of the ""specialist"" brokers. Million miles away from the £190.00 fully comp price i had including buiness cover, glass, legal, guarenteed repair, protected ncb. At that im 50 with 12 yrs ncb no convictions and 1 no fault none loss claim where my car was written off due to white van man.

Sites that only give 9+ years NCB, seems as if you have more than 9+ NCB it doesn't matter. I got a cheaper quote than my renewal using comparethemarket, then got it cheaper than that using the insurers own website, Hastings Direct.

Just renewed mine with admiral was over £100 cheaper than anything on comparison sites
