R32 rear ARB's

Thinking of upgrading just my rear ARB for an R32 one. Has anyone else got this set up and what are your thoughts??

I've read a few old posts regarding upgrading front and rear but could not find much on changing just the rear.
By the way, my suspension is currently standard.

I have a VW ARB... not sure if it was the 4Motion or the R32.

I think it was 1mm or 2mm thicker than the original rear ARB.

I've got an R32 rear and a stock front. I have to admit that I didn't notice much difference.

If you change both front to 22mm and rear to 19mm I believe you will feel the difference big time.

Is this the size of the R32 ARB's?

R32 ARBs are 23mm Front and 19mm rear...ANDYTQ has these

Neuspeed ARBs are 22mm Front and 19mm rear.

If you read Ess Three's posts that extra 1mm diameter on the R32 front ARB is probably too much and the neuspeed 22mm is the best for eliminating understeer.

HTH

Ohh, I never realised that the R32 were 23mm, but you have a point, Ess adviced me on gettin 22/19 combo as that seems to suit the S3 best. But I'm just curiouse, how is this so when the S3 and MK4 Golfs are nearly identical? so would it be twitchier than a MK 4 golf (4motion) with 23mm in front than an S3? or similar feeling?

Aside from helping with turn in and understeer would these help reduce the body roll in corners significantly even with standard suspension ?

Not so sure about that one cause I've got suspensions just standard ARBs, but I will tell you this, spring/coilovers help with body roll, roundabouts are never the same again, and I hope an upgrade in ARBs would help significantly in what remains of the body roll

i have just the rear fitted at the moment and it improved the feal of the car around corners. The front will get fitted this summer as its gathering dust on my shelf /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif .

I fitted the r32 arbs originally with standard s3 shocks and springs,it seems to handle a lot flatter, but as Ess Three said not a good combination, standard shocks are crap , lack control over uneven surfaces and ride quality is poor.I am in the process of fitting bilsteins and h&r springs as well as s3 later arms, ball joints, tracking arms and forge rear arms.Actually its in the garage now, hopefully ready for me to pick up tomorrow,i hope it all is worth it .I asked for the alignment to be set up to Ess'es recommended settings.I don't think i will be able to fit spacers on the front as well due to wider s3 track but no wider s3 wings, but i might try some on the rear at a later date when money tree recovers(hopefully).Yours one excited Andy /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beerchug.gif

Discussed at great length in the past. to summarise:

R32 ARB's decent, cheap upgrade. Also hard to get hold of now.
Neuspeed ARB's, more expensive but is a complete solution rather than going some way to solve the problem.

Both really need upgraded dampers to work properly, as being stiffer, when they unload the standard dampers could have trouble coping.

If you want a full, in depth discussion listing the pros and cons do a search. There is a lot of detail on this subject.

The Neuspeed are expensive items /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Can the r32 items still be sourced from Vw?

Would 1mm difference from the front VW ARB to the Neuspeed make that much difference?

I've got std shocks, but lowered springs, not sure what to change next to change the car for the best, ideal world would be the lot, Either that I'm going to flog it and buy a vx220.
Looks as if you've got to spend 2k+ plus to sort the S3 into a car that goes as quick/handles and brakes as well as it should have from the factory. I still love the car b4 I upset anyone, just frustrated the car does not handle as I'd like it too.
Looking at the Vx I need about a grand plus to buy one (+sale of my car), so I may have a grand to spend on the S3, downside is the mods will not make the car worth any more when you sell it on
A thousand pounds on mods will not go far. I need shocks, ARB's and a remap.
I could save some money and go for a generic map not a custom but I'm still a long way off.

Know how you feel mate. I've gone and done just that. Sold the car (well, nearly) and agreed to buy something a bit more fun.

How much better is the S3 after a remap, shocks and springs and ARB's?
The remap is a ABT based reamp, the shocks and sprinsg are Koni, and the ARB's will be Neuspeed. Close on £1500, I either spend the money or sell the car.

I was also told the front wishbone bushes are best replaced also, the list it seems is endless

Not sure what to do...

Well, it begins with W and has no windscreen.

Good man... not sure if you saw my other reply but it looks like I'll be heading for an S2000 if I can sort everything and then saving for a supercharger for serious big grin!

What engine you looking for in the westie?

Good stuff. Will be awesome with a supercharger!

I've already put a deposit down on a 2.0 Vauxhall engined car. Should come in at around 200bhp.
Spent 3 hours looking at the car on sunday! And was surprised at how "un-harsh" the suspension was. That was my main concern, that and my mechanical abilities. After that, it didn't need too much selling.

I do plan on getting a windscreen for it soon though!

why not get jabba sport to make you up a rear anti roll bar 27 mm speak to nick he quote me tops off £300.

Awesome GTi have some good prices, front and rear Neuspeed were about £300 I think.

Don't want to waste the money on the car if its never going to be much better than what it is.

What's a S3 like after a remap?

[ QUOTE ]
Well it'll either be S2000 / Elise S2 or TVR at the moment and brain says S2000 I hope you'll be staying around on here to wind everyone up!

[/ QUOTE ]

Will do. I really want an Elise S2 with an S2000 engine, would be awesome but hugely expensive.

That's more than the Neuspeed front and rear cost. Why pay more for something that won't work as well.

Makes a huge difference. Do a search everyone will say the same thing. Do it now rather than thinking about it for nearly a year (like i did!).

I was going to spend money getting new Bilstein dampers and the Neuspeed ARB's, but have decided to sell the car instead.

nick at jabba said only change the rear on your car will handle better and oversteer more than understeer which will be alot more fun, and yess 27mm thick no flex then.

Surprised Jabba are saying that because a 27mm rear bar just doesnt make sense.

Dunc

Utter shizzle...
Front ARB is too small...and 27mm rear is dangerous!

This guy knows nothing...

i have R32 front an rear arbs. although i have had a complete suspension overhaul so cant comment individually on the arbs, but the setup works well on the track

i can only go on what ive been told, and that the r32 arb are only 1 to 2 mm bigger. im sorry if people dont like what ive said but that's what a specialist has said.

It's those 1-2mm that makes the difference! 27mm does seem harsh.

Ignore the one they call EssThree, he's very passionate about his ARB's lol /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I'll take 7 days btw /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If anyone new to the forum (in the last year or so) seriously do a search, because GLen (Ess_three) has fully written up all his experiences with then and the theory behind it all.

Makes very good reading, and essential if you're considering an ARB upgrade.

Wouldnt it be better to have a sticky for "good advice for mods section" ?? Dicky?
