Question about spray work!

Hi Guys,

I have sustainined some damage to my passenger door from some knoob driving into me in a car park so the car needs to go into the bodyshop for some work... :-(

I have told them I'm fussy and i want it to look good and they said it would be worth spraying the area and blending right in the the rear quarter.. Which all sounds good.. Mine is Akoya Silver which I can imagine isnt an easy match.. Bodyshop comes well recommended however my question is has anyone had similair work done and is it possible to get it near perfect?

Ouch! no matter what you do akoya is silver is v.hard to match blend or no blend you will be able to tell a mile off not matter who the painter is, its all down to the paint mixture and laqure.

Ahhhhhh :-( thats not what I wanted to hear! Do you think even with a blend from front to back you will see it.. Going to expensive me thinks!

personally i would get the paint mixed up to match my car from a well known paint supplier and then just get that panel painted would look better then blended, thats what il do but some1 else may have better ideas, i got my car fully resprayed and 2 extra lr of paint mixed with the paint currently on the car so i shouldnt have a problem with matching the paint.

When Ive had paint work done in the past I always check edges of panels/rubber seals for smoothness and overspray, also check that the repaired paintwork has the same texture (orange peel) as factory, as if you have different textures when you come to sell its obvious a repair has been undertaken. Try and check the repair in bright light and look for blemishes and dirt inclusions, which can normally be wet and dried out, but you will need to spot them and point them out on collection. I would advise you to get them to blend in the rear quarter as well. Difference in paint colours/shades will be far more obvious if only the damaged panel is painted.

Just on the work computer will take some tonight, not sure what to do, my mate is in bodyshop repairs and has banged out alot of the damage leaving a couple of creases so it will need to be filled (2mm) and painted :-/ not sure whether to get a new door tbh.. Gutted isnt the word..

Well my mate seems positive it will be a good if not perfect match, but from what I have read Akoya is a bit of a nightmare, but I have seen some of their work and it looks good... £120 a panel and I reckon I will just tell them to do what it takes to get it near bang on... fingers crossed!!

I have Maritius Blue and had my door repaired under Audi warranty and they have only painted the new door. The colour match is shocking and i'm currently fighting them for them to re do it. I have had quotes to respray the whole side to get a perfect colour match of around £600 mark.

dont get the paint mixed anywhere else because then if the colour isnt right its on your toes plus alot of bodyshops would refuse to use paint you have supplied because of this problem.

if you go to a good bodyshop that has good painters they should be able to get the colour right so you cant see any colour difference as they will have their own colour scheme and they will have colour chips of all the different shades then if the colour is wrong when you collect the car its down to them to rectify the problem.

never paint a panel edge to edge unless there is enough room within that panel to blend and if not then blend into the next panel, in some cases depending on the size of the repair they may have to blend into the panel in front and behind the repair.

also it is down to the painter as no 2 painters will paint the same, 2 different painters could paint the same colour formulation and end up with two different shades as it is down to how the paint is applied.

Wow some conflicting stuff guess its a fingers crossed number I think I will trust my mate had a chat with him tonight and he reckons his guy, the painter performs miracles I am going to leave it to them if I am not happy with it, it will keep going back till its right.. If they reckon they can get it perfect then it will be there till it is!! Gutted though I knew Akoya would be a mare!!

You can see the creases on the door so it's a new door or filler about 2mm, total area is about 30cm

pictures are not very clear but im assuming the damage is at the front of the door so why blend the rear quarter panel and not the front wing???

Glad you have the faith mate! It will be wing door and blown into the rear quarter from what I understand.. They seem confident so what can I say.. Just wanted to know if it's possible to get it straight and looking good again! I can't look at the car on that side ATM!

There's no reason why a decent bodyshop cant get that reapired & painted with a blend into the front wing & through the rear door only. Having worked as a sprayer previously I can say that silver is one one the top 3 'difficult' colours to match, with probably red & white being even worse (I'm not even kidding), the issue with silver is that the laquer will add a slight tint to the colour thats already been laid down on the base coats hence the need for a blend. Luckily for you the position of the damage means that colour can be kept mainly to the upper part of the doors (near the window edge & the front wing to bonnet shut line) which helps to hide any slight colour differences there may be.

The thing that will make it stand out though it is if they dont flat & polish the newly sprayed panels well & dont polish up the surrounding panels as this will make the 'orange peel' of the new laquer seem even more pronounced against the older panels that have had several years for the laquer to become flatter though wear & tear, washing & polishing etc.

Guys, just a quick update on this thread. Car has been in over the weekend to be stripped etc and today was D-day!! PAINT day! As my mate works for this company in Norwich, he got me their best sprayer on the case.. It was always going to be a front to rear quater blend... Just had the call from my mate who said he's just seen it come out of the Bake and said it looks amazing... He reckons I will be more than chuffed with it perfect blend and its mint again!!!

I will get some pics up of the work in progress as he took some of it stripped and has taken some along the way!! She is being polished and valeted and will be ready for collection tomorrow. I feel like its Christmas!! ))))))))))))

£400 all in, which I think was pretty good considering the work on it... I also had a bump on the splitter at the front where the paint was cracked which I asked them to have a look at and they have pretty much sprayed the whole thing.. So splitter, Front quarter through the damage to the rear quarter... I got mates rates on the labour at £15 per hour...... I should also say thats with a years guarentee on the work...

Does anyone know how easy Phantom Black is to match? I've got some damage to the edge of my bonnet (which will have to be faded into the front quarter) thanks to some mortar that fell off the roof I got a quote from Fix Auto near me but have just been reluctant to go ahead with it so far due to concerns about how well it will match!

I had a rear quarter sprayed on my old black Clio (by a different company - a mobile company so probably shouldn't have expected miracles) and it stood out like a sore thumb; the paint was so lifeless. I noticed (and hated) it every time I saw it. Once bitten...

I got a new spoiler with hatch painted up when I got a towbar fitted.

I went to an Audi Approved Paint shop and gave them the proper Audi colour code. The chap then said he'll have to check what shade it was and came back with different swatches of the same color code to match up with my car.

The end result seemed fine.................or at least it looks okay to me.

You need to find someone reputable who does a lot of insurance work (Solus do all the Aviva work) it will be fine and I would imagine Phantom Black (Awesome colour btw) is about the same as Akoya, believe it or not the sprayer was telling me Akoya actually has some yellow in it, the reason he knows it is they mix the paint to spec.. they test spray and if its not right they remix again... its all done in house and I think thats they key to a good bodyshop if they have full responsibility for all aspects of their work then its their fault if it goes wrong.. Make sure they gaurentee their work...

I am sure if you post on here there will be people who will have used a body shop near you that they rate...

I got a quote from them which didn't seem too bad so I might give them a go - the only thing putting me off though was the match I might end up with.

Looking at their website they definitely specialise with insurance jobs and they guarantee their work for life so I can't really complain there!

If your that fussy id look for an Audi approved bodyshop in your area as most insurance want to pay little as possible so will use pretty much anyone,
i know a bloke who works on his own in an arch under the railway that does insurace work and he doesnt even have a booth to bake the cars he has painted and uses cheap products, although his work is pretty good for the money i would not let him near my car,
obviously this isnt the case with fix auto as they sound a massive outfit but what im trying to say is just because they have insurance approval it doesnt mean you will get the results you are looking for.

Give solusarc a go that's where I went they have won a few awards and they probably have one near you.. Not the cheapest by far but the norwich guys are ace, so might be worth a go. And they will probably have a few cars waiting for pick up in the yard so have a look and see what you think of their work... Mines in there now all bling waiting for me to come and pick her up :-(

I had my door replaced by an Audi approved body shop and the result was awful! Poor colour match, full of orange peel and it looked dull and lifeless.

It's going in for a side respray then I get my S line bumper painted and put on.

Whoa you must be the most negative fella on here! Before, you mentioned there was no way they could get the colour right.. Bumpers will always be slightly different due to them not being metal plus the light reflects differently on different surfaces with akoya pretty sure yours will be the same in different lights..

Come on fella coming from the fella that cut his roof off, things can work out well in the end!!

I have to admit, i was thinking the same as Amar when i first saw the pictures. The spray job looks good but i would either get them to blend in the bumper or respray the bumper.
