I have a Audi a3 quattro sport 2007 2.0tdi. When traveling in higher gears the noise is more noticeable as if theres a hole in exhaust pipe boaring, once i get past or below 2200-2400 the car runs perfectly normal, the noise can be heard slightly in 3rd to more noticeable in 6th. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem or know what it could be?

erm you could say it sounds a lil like vibration on exhaust?, but nothing felt through the clutch.

Have a look see if you can see anything in contact with exhaust. If your above 2400 rpm and take foot off accelerator does the noise come back as you slow down. Or is it mainly on acceleration ?

yeh the noise comes if im accelerating betweeen 2200-2400 it is quietest heard in 3rd gear and boars like hell in 6th, once im past 80mph which is at 2400-2500rpm the car returns to normal sounds.. i only found the noise when on motorway has 6th gear at 70mph is around 2200-2300. i have not properly looked at the exhaust but it seems to have no obvious problems when accelerating not in gear

Your engine stops producing maximum torque at 2500 rpm. So it could possibly be engine related hence why I was thinking dmf. My old bora tdi dmf was knackered and was worse in 6th at 1800 to 2500 when accelerating. I'd be checking engine mounts and exhaust system as it's also quattro would be looking at the gearbox output rubber to prop shaft. How many miles has it done ?

its done 142,000 miles. I could go for a drive in car and record the noise if that would help?

It's also due a service in 600 mile, i have it booked in tuseday for service i could ask for them to check out the mounts and exhaust while im there.

Yeah a recording of the noise may well help identify the problem. Try 6th gear from 50 mph upto 80 mph then leave it coast back down.

I just tried to record the noise but it doesn't pick it up properly, i did what you said get it from 50-80 in 6th then coast, whiles coasting it dont make the noise.its soon has I hit accelerator again between the 2200-2400

Ok as it doesn't do it while revving engine would concentrate elsewhere. Although could be turbo related would expect this in any gear. My thoughts are get garage to check exhaust, mounts, although if neither of these am still leaning towards dmf especially if original with that mileage. There are a few videos on you tube of dmf failure noises have a look see if any help

I have listened to dmf fail and it does nothing like that, my noise isn't constant it runs smooth upto 3rd gear and 2200rpm then whilest ever I'm between there and 2400rpm it boars / vibrates

Bit of an odd one see what the garage finds Tuesday. would be worth having it scanned with vcds see if there are any fault codes relating to engine etc

I have the exact same problem with my audi a3 quattro 2.0 TDI, did you ever get this fixed?

Unsure about the vibrating symptom. But the boaring sound youre describing is something I had not too long ago. Switched out the front wheel bearing and the noise was gone. You'd hear it most on motorway driving around the revs youre describing.

Could be the propshaft donuts. Mine was doing similar, new donuts cured it

Im sure it is the donuts and not the wheel bearing as it is coming from under the car not from the wheel arch.

My questions is did you replace the front and the rear donut or only one?

Also, what is the correct part number: 1K0 521 307A is what i found online - anyone confirm this is the correct one for audi a3 57 plate 2.0 tai quattro?

Thanks!

Rear propshaft donut causing droning?

Rear propshaft donut causing droning?

Yes think it is, but how can i know if its the front or the rear? replace the rear first and if it doesn't solve the issue do the front?

depends how much money you’re willing to part in the investigation or guessing by parts without the right tools. A few mm misalignment in installing their new coupler even would result in the same behaviour.

see below

Wow thanks for the insight! Def not keen on doing that myself! I will buy the parts and take it to a garage to install

The donuts themselves are pretty easy to do. Generally the front doesn’t wear much and they’re not mega money. Got both of mine from AUTODOC. Mines a facelift so Audi reckon you have to buy the whole propshaft, luckily they’re talking out their **** and I just used pre facelift donuts. Have to make sure the donuts are bolted in the correct holes otherwise you get mega droning. Need to check the centre bearing is all good too as that will rumble if it’s gone

those are the ones I ordered

I got the donut from auto doc but not sure how to get this installed properly so decided to book it into a garage. How much should I be expected to pay for the labour to have this part installed? Just got quoted £250 for labour alone - is this reasonable?

Took me 45 minutes to do both on a ramp with my bud. There’s enough play in the system to change it without actually removing any parts. Mine a 2010 tdi 170 Quattro, would’ve thought they be all the same

That sounds more like it - think they garage told me its a big job with them having to remove my exhaust etc - didn't think this would be necessary - anyone on here with a ramp that would be willing to help out a fellow member? Thanks!! happy to pay to use it - id rather pay fellow member than garage that don't know what they are doing..

Hello to everyone . I want to be informed if anyone has fixed the problem and how? I have the same problem. noise starts at 2200rmp and stops at 2600 rmp. 4rd gear and boars like hell in 6th.

need a new donut ring for prop shaft - I bought them but not installed yet as I need a ramp to install them...

From what I can remember, it was a case of undoing the carrier bearing then just unbolting the donuts and sliding backwards/forwards, you need to make sure the new ones and the shaft go in the same orientation otherwise it puts everything out of balance and you get loads of vibration

Hi there, did you ever get to the bottom of this issue? my car is experiencing that exact same issue. I have been to two Audi specialists and main dealer and none of them can provide a diagnosis. I am hoping you have a cure for me :)

Hi all,

Looking for some help on a similar issue i'm getting. Got the 8v 1.4 tfsi 2014 and getting the same sort of vibration coming through when sitting on the motorway at appx 2200 - 2400 rpm in 6th.

Drives normal moving up through the gears, can accelerate through this range. It's only really prominent when sitting at a steady 70mph. Past this it dissapears.

I can also replicate the vibration in neutral sitting at the same rev range.

Trying to figure out if it's the bearing issue a few threads are pointing to or worse and it's the DMF that i've seen mentioned on a few other threads.

TIA for any help or leads on this one.
