Private Plates

Its been a while since I last transferred mine across and I have a vague recollection of getting a form from the DVLA.

Looking at the DVLA website this is now online, did people do the transfer on the day while in the dealer's offices or beforehand and then get some new number plates made up?

My current supplying dealer reserves the right to hold on to a non-trivial amount pending updating of the V5!

I transferred mine back to a normal plate before I traded, and had the retention certificate for my personal plate in hand which l gave to the dealer before collection day. So drove off forecourt with personal plate already fitted.

The retention certificate includes the transfer fee these days, and you can do it all on line, but it’s not instant transfer if I remember it’s a few days, and you get something i the post saying you can now drive on the personal plates.

Spoke to the dealer the other day and was lead to believe the removal and transfer is now actually instant if done during 7am - 7pm online. They said they often just do it there and then.

When I bought the S3 I just gave them the form and they sorted it out, I collected the car with the private reg on...it was the cars 1st reg...no extra charge.

When I was selling the S3 and removing the private plate, the car insurance guy recommended me waiting until I receive the new V5 before putting the year reg plates on and moving the insurance over.

As said above, it's all done online now which is easy, plus no charge to put it on the next car and you can keep it on retention for 10 years and not have to pay a yearly fee to keep it in your name.

NB: If the new car is with Audi finance and on year plates and you the want to change it to a private plate, you are supposed to tell Audi finance and they will update your paperwork their end and charge you £50 to do it! I was told by an Audi employee "Just put your private plates on, when you come to trade in switch them back to the year plates, in the meantime if Audi contact you about it just act daft and then pay the £50". As long as DVLA and the insurance match that is the main thing.

Thanks, the first registration is the easy bit.

I may well hand my car back a couple of days before picking up the new one, all depends whether it arrives this year or not.

Hopefully two final question - how long did it take to receive the new V5 and the retention certificate in the post?

Think I might have mucked things up a little bit - took a bit too much notice of where people's cars have spent an age in transit!

When moving to my Sportback from the coupe I got an electronic one instantly that I emailed to the dealer for them to do their part and the retention certificate and new v5c arrived about 3 days after that.

In case anybody looks this thread up in the future;

Did the online retention bit around midday on Tuesday, the V5C arrived in Friday's post and the retention certificate followed on Saturday. All via second class post

Reminder there's a £50 fee to pay to VWFS if you update your reg number whilst it's on finance

Or you could just not tell them ha (but then, when it goes in for a service, they may kick off)

I swapped to my private reg 3 months ago and VWFS didn't charge me a fee for it...

When I bought the car their finance guy mentioned the £50, he said change the plates over and just act daft if they pull you on it lol. Depending on their service quote depends on if I use them for a service anyway! When I had the S3 the 2nd service was as follows:

Cheshire Oaks Audi £365
Crewe Audi £401.19
Liverpool Audi £439.80
Audi specialist £220

Yes I went with the specialist :) Came to px time and it wasn't even mentioned!
