Power steering pump failed! Argh!

So I got the dreaded whine at low speeds yesterday, and over the last 24hrs it's got to the stage where it sounds like a dying animal. Dropped it to the local VAG specialist, who confirmed my fears that the PAS pump had failed.

They've quoted £520 for a genuine part supplied and fitted, £360 for a 'locally supplied' part fitted, or mentioned that if I could source my own they would just charge a couple of hours labour.

Does this a) sound normal and b) seem likely that I'll be able to find a PAS pump (TT or S3) in a day or two?

Had my power steering fail completely a couple of weeks ago. It had been sitting for a few weeks, took it out the garage and straight away the whine was noticable. I drove it down to the petrol station and it got significantly louder so I drove it home and by the time I got there, there was no powersteering at all. No whine either, a total fail.

Fearing the worst I phoned up the guys at 4 Rings and Dean came and fixed it. Apparently the lowest pipe in the system is very prone to corrosion from the inside out, and had basically sprung a pinhole leak. He replaced that (the cheapest part of the system) and it's good to go. If you did it yourself the part is only about £70 I think, as well as some new PAS fluid.

Basically check the fluid. If it's low, if could be the same issue and you can save yourself a packet from going to the stealers.

I have to shamefully admit I'm next to useless with a spanner. Cheers for the tip tho. Thanks to a helpful ASN member I've got a new pump on its way to me tomorrow.

So I sourced a pump, which turned out to be the wrong one (1J0 422 154 B), despite coming off an S3.
The one that broke on mine is a 8n0145154a, which I believe is the proper S3 / TT one. Confusion all round.

After telling me the pump was the wrong part number, the garage have now turned round and said that the power steering pipe is knackered too, and to replace this and the pump, using all new parts comes to an eye-watering £940 incl labour.

Anyone in the Bristol area breaking an S3 that I can scavenge parts from?

I have a feeling money is going to be scarce this Xmas :/
