my power steering pump on my s3 is getting tired. I have a donor a3 1.8t. Are the pumps the same?

So different part number but will it work?

tbh I have no idea...

The S3/TT etc has a different rack to the A3... its entirely plausible that the 8N0 part is designed to work with it but its also entirely plausible its the same part and a different number... VAG are crazy like that

As a pump it will work but I don't know if its internals are any different because of the quicker rack... I do know the A3 has 'lighter' steering than the S3 but that could be just because the S3 has a quick rack which are inherently 'stiffer'

Fitted a R32(same as S3/TT/LCR) pump to my VRS, pumps are basically the same, from the reading I've done the operating pressure is different, from what I remember, the S3 etc runs at 100psi and all other models run at 90psi

Makes sense that the quick rack requires a little more operating pressure to help it along...

I fitted a quick rack to my Mk2 Escort and had to change from my Mountney steering wheel to a larger diameter Escort RS2000 one to stand a chance of maneuvering at low speeds lol...

I've done this the oposite way: pump from APY fitted to a '97 AGU. Works fine, but the S3 pump had a pressure sensor that the '97 A3 didn't have. The A3 in question is a track car though, so haven't been able to test it for more than a couple 1000 miles.

Hmm. Crap. Prob not worth doing the swap then. My steering is stiff enough without putting in a lower pressure pump. My steering is very heavy. And my steering wheel makes a rubbing/honking loud noise when I turn

You have checked the fluid level? the pumps tend to be quite reliable but the pipes rot and leak lowering the fluid level which cause the groaning noises you hear when steering...

Yep

Cars retrofitted with 'quick rack', but not the higher psi pump have noticably heavier low speed steering

The 'quick rack' when paired to its correct pump still feels a little bit heavier than 'standard rack' and its pump

'Standard rack' + S3 pump is on my to-try list

How easy/hard are they to change?
Mine is getting tired, hard work with no revs but blip the throttle and all is well.
