I checked my power steering today after hearing a slight quealing when turning, and was not amused to find it was empty. I know the obvious answer is a leak, but wait....
the car has been off the road for a week as i've been replacing the sump (i hit something on the road that gouged a nice hole in it) and the car has been moved about a lot, hence i've been turning the wheel back and forth without the engine on, just the ignition to stop it locking. Could this have somehow 'used up' the power steering fluid??
Or, could the object i hit on the road have damaged something in the power steering system?

Any help appreciated!

I had a problem a while back now where I noticed the level had dropped. Mine was a leak on the long steel pipe that hoops accros the front of the car. It had rusted quite bad and there was a small pin hole in it. Check if anywhere under the car is wet. If it's empty put some in and see where it goes. If it isn't leaking out .... I would say rack
