I then hooked up VCDS and had a play around, it was a few weeks back but I managed to stop the PAS working (not my finest moment). So now, we have four yellow dash lights, no ABS or power steering (my wife loves it..) and an MOT due! :(

My research is pointing to a rear right wheel bearing, or the ABS sensor, or maybe the ABS pump which looks pretty expensive.

What's going on here and how to proceed? :S

Hi, i have the same issue with mine. Ive been driving close to 4 months without power steering. I too have faulty ABS Wheel Speed Sensor. From what ive found, you cannot calibrate the steering assist without clearing all ABS faults first.
Wheel speed sensors cost around £15 each but it depends if the sensor has gone bad or the wiring. Wiring ofcourse is more expensive if faulty.
Just a quick one, can you check on VCDS 44-Steering Assist, then Measuring Blocks and then group 007. Where it says steering angle, does it stay on 0 when you turn your steering wheel?

Have you tried this:

Sensor for Steering Angle (G85)
Important Note: This procedure ONLY applies to Models with Conti/Teves MK70 ABS/ASR.

This Procedure does NOT apply to Conti/Teves MK60, MK60CE, MK60EC1 and similar ABS/ASR/ESP systems. Check the Vehicle specific Diagnostic Procedures pages for each ABS System page with documentation.
EXCEPTION: It may be necessary to perform this procedure (in addition to the corresponding one in the ABS itself) if the ABS coding has been lost or the ABS module has been replaced.

Prerequisites:

  • Start the vehicle.
  • Turn the steering wheel one turn to the right and one turn to the left.
  • Drive in a short distance straight line on a level surface at a speed not higher than 20 km/h.
  • If the steering wheel is straight during the test drive then stop the vehicle with the wheels pointed straight.
  • Ensure that the steering wheel is not moved again.
  • Keep the engine running and do not switch off the ignition.
  • System voltage at least 12.0 V.
[Select]
[44 - Steering Assist]
[Coding-II - 11]
or if that function is not available then use [Sec.Access - 16] instead
Enter 40168, to enable the basic setting.
[Do it!]
[Basic Settings - 04]

Group 060
[Go!]
Activate the Basic Setting.
[ON/OFF/Next]
After a successful basic setting, field 1 should say "OK".
[Done, Go Back]
To make sure the basic setting was successful, check the sensor again.
[Measuring Blocks - 08]
Group 007
[Go!]
Check field 1, the value has to be between -1.5 and +1.5 °.
[Done, Go Back]
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]

Note: After successful basic setting, the Steering Limit Stop needs to be adapted too.

Steering Limit Stop Adaptation
(Engine still running)

  • Center steering wheel (±10°) and hold it centered for 5 seconds.
  • Turn steering wheel completely to the left and hold it there for 10 seconds.
  • Turn steering wheel completely to the right and hold it there for 10 seconds.
  • Center steering wheel (±10°).
  • Switch OFF engine and ignition.
  • Switch ON ignition.
  • Wait 5 seconds.
  • Steering Assist Warning Lamp should turn OFF. If it doesn't, perform a short test drive.

Notes:

  • If the 02546 - Steering Limit Stop 005 - No or Incorrect Basic Setting / Adaptation fault will not clear after driving the vehicle and completing the VW Golf (1K) Steering Assist procedure:
    • Increase the time in-between key cycles to 30 seconds or more.
    • Check all Adaptation values in the #44-Steering Assist controller.
    • Verify all of the WSS (Wheel Speed Sensor) values are plausible in the 03-ABS controller! We received feedback from both Mk70 equipped and MK60 ESP equipped (1K) Golf models with 02546 and 00778 DTCs that would not clear due to a faulty WSS. Even if a WSS DTC is not stored it would be advised to log or graph MVB 001 while driving.
  • It has been reported that this procedure may not work when in Park with some vehicles with automatic transmission, keep in gear with foot on the brake.

I had tried that thanks. It doesn't reset the steering though. I've read because I also have the 00287 (G44) code which I've read blocks the reset until it's cleared. I think once the Rear right wheel speed sensor error is cleared I'll be able to then quickly get the power steering back after doing that reset procedure (turn left then right etc).

Here's an updated Carista:

It sounds like we've been doing similar Googling, I'm going to be taking a proper look tomorrow so I'll firstly be checking the sensor going to the wheel and then the wiring.

I also read that sometimes the speed sensors are incorrectly named or placed. So the rear left might actually be the rear right. Probably not, but worth keeping in mind just in case things seem really weird (i.e. swap over the speed sensor but still not working, it may be the opposite that's actually dead).

I initially bought a vcds cable to do the adaptation for the steering light myself. But like yourself, after doing so, i lost my power steering completely but in my case i only have yellow steering light and not abs.

Unfortunately i cant really see if swapping sensors would work as i dont have the tools to do so. Due to exams and stuff ive reduced my hours at work and would like not to take to a garage till later as its not something serious. Yes its a hell of a workout but im sort of used to it.

Anyways, if you do get this sorted i would like to know what helps and maybe try to fix this myself if it isnt too hard.

No problem, I'll be having a go at fixing it tomorrow and Thursday so with any luck I'll have something to report back which will hopefully help. Fingers crossed. :p

Guys don't even start checking/swapping/adapting/calibrating etc. your power steering or angle sensor before you fix wheel speed sensors :))
Power steering is pretty dependent on steering angle sensor and is waiting for it to initialize and give some info but it won't, until system passes wheel sensors check.

And one more tip. If you manage to delete G44 fault when car is stationary, it means your wiring is most probably good and car just can't see correct values from that wheel because of sensor or the magnetic ring in the bearing...

Updated VCDS with the ABS error, I think the original one I posted was an earlier one.

Also, attached is the output from doing a graph on the speed sensors. There's definitely something up with the rear right. New sensor arriving and if that doesn't fix it then I'll be ordering a new wheel bearing and hoping that will be it.

End ---------------------------------------------------------------------

So I received the new sensor (around £10 from eBay rather than £70 from Audi...) and went about dismantling things.

I tried to remove the sensor without forcing it, it seemed pretty stuck in there. I decided to take the disc off to get a better look at the other end of the sensor and also to check the bearing housing to see if it was obviously damaged. The housing of the wheel bearing didn't look great, as I rotated it there was an obvious area that dropped away from the sensor and it also appeared cracked like crazy paving in parts.

The sensor also has wear from the bearing area contacting the sensor. I thought I'd probably have to replace both and decided that I'd at least try cleaning the sensor rim area on the bearing as it was pretty thick with dirt.

I fired up VCDS again, put it on graph mode, stuck a screwdriver in the lug hole and tried to keep it rotating at a constant rate, I then checked on the laptop and it actually looked fairly smooth so I thought I might have fixed it just by cleaning.

Put everything back together, cleared the codes, did the steering all the way to the right and hold for 10 seconds, then all the way to the left and hold for 10 seconds before re-centering and immediately the power steering was back! Checking the graph as I drove along shows all four ABS sensors working perfectly! I wasn't expecting that at all. It might be that it fails again in a month or six but it'll get me through the MOT and perhaps will be ok for years if I'm lucky.

Now it's just the passenger window to fix. :)

That gives me hope with my issue ive had for around 4 months now. I occasinally move my mums vw touran out of our drive and my god do i miss power steering.
How hard was it to replace the sensor and do you think i could do the same without any mechanical experience. I hate taking my car to the garage as i have trust issues lol.

I didn't have to replace the sensor, I just cleaned everything up. I still have the sensor I bought spare. If you have no mechanical experience then you may struggle. However, you could be sneaky and get an old rag (preferably a white or light coloured towel), a screwdriver and some good cleaner and do the following on flat ground which would be very simple to do and won't even need you to remove the wheel:

1) Put handbrake on
2) put wheel chocks front and rear to stop car rolling in either direction
3) Jack up the car on the corner you want to work on, using the jacking point
4) Place Axle stands under car for safety
5) Get a torch (high powered head torch would be easiest)
6) Take handbrake off so wheel can spin
7) Get yourself under the car and using the torch, locate the sensor. It's a black cable running in to a plastic part that's central to the wheel and has a single nut to one side.
8) Notice next to it there's a small gap and you can see the other end of the plastic sensor.
9) Saturate the towel in cleaning fluid
10) place screwdriver in to towel and then push towel through small gap on to metal surface
11) Keeping medium pressure on the screwdriver, rotate the wheel slowly, allowing the towel to rub and hopefully clean
12) Keep doing this until towel isn't completely covered in filth
13) Put handbrake back on
14) Remove axle stands and lower car
15) Remove wheel chocks
16) Cross fingers and try the power steering reset technique... (clear codes if you can).

That's my amateur advice, it's worth seeking someone with some mechanical experience to help you if it's your first time.
