You still pretending to window shop for a S3

Indeed, I did decide to look into getting an M2 which I’m test driving next week. Still keep looking at S3s though, can’t help but love the car.

Just found this forum and wanted to take a moment and share the love with my new pride and joy - picked her up on the weekend from Stoke, 100 mile drive back to Wakefield driving her back home - first car, and for me she's an absolute beaut.

Sorry dont like battleship/undercoat/Nerdo lookalike grey mate, nicely specced though

The M2 aint the car for you if you use it as a daily driver...very high running costs, tyres, fuel, road tax, servicing

Will they all cost THAT much more than the S3 though? I understand fuel, but how much more will servicing and tyres be?

Oh yes...ever so slightly cheaper to run than a M4 cp...Hence my son chose to have a M4 cp over a M2 as his Demo at the time.....he paid his own fuel cost back then ie 18 months ago, rear tyres dont last more than 8k miles, fronts 12k miles, servicing costs are all relative,l actually think they need a oil change/service after the 1k miles

Christ can you imagine what some RS3 whiners would make of that

Well I’ll see what I think after the test drive, one thing I do know is I prefer the interior of the S3 over the M2, although I definitely think the M2 is the better looking of the two, miles better sound too of course.

Weren't you maybe buying an S3 last January lol.
The S3 will be end of production by the time you make a decision on what you want.

Yeah lol I ordered one but I cancelled because of the OPF, since pretty much only been looking now and then, most S3s on the market now days seem to be pretty bad spec for whatever reason or have the OPF.

Well if your referring to the M2 Cp ie my2019 car yer going to have to visit a aftermarket exhaust specialist... It's been given the wltp Gimp mask treatment

It’s just the standard M2, I actually prefer it. I prefer the grills and wheels on the standard one, and also prefer the engine to the Competition too. Not to mention a lot cheaper.

Why don't you wait a bit longer then you'll have more choice the new M140i, M240i, new S3 etc etc all due to be launched this year

Yeah I could do I’m not in any rush to get a new car. But isn’t the new S3 next year? Also I don’t see any of them having decent sound with all these new emission laws.

Think things would improve. Think sound is only poor at the moment as they're just chucking in the PPF as opposed to integrating it properly. Will have to see.

It’s a shame the new M 1/2 series BMW’s appear to have a 4 pot engine which probably won’t offer much more sound improvement over an S3. I’m tempted to go for an S5 at the moment for the V6 especially with Audi announcing those future models will be diesel they may even hold their value a little better :readit:

You won't be disappointed. Loving the S5 at the moment, currently looking at maybe increasing the sound a bit. Straight pipe or something if possible. Announcement of diesel increased my part ex value a fair bit

Have you considered Res delete and replaced with an H pipe. I have heard it on an S4 and it sounds really nice.

A Res delete was what I was thinking (as S3 had that) but not been able to find many videos/information on doing it for a 2018 S5

That’s what I’m thinking not much extra to change either per month, how do you rate the sound compared to the S3? I test drove one and thought it sounded louder than my S3 (bar a few less pops and bangs) but I’ve heard a few drive past me since and they’ve seemed pretty quiet, depends what mode people have them in I guess though.

Also, any complaints about the tiptronic box vs the stronic in the S3 I didn’t notice much difference on my test drive although I wasn’t in manual mode that much.

Sound is a lot deeper under acceleration and I prefer it. Pops and bangs still there, when in sport and downshifting around 2.5k rpm, although seem quiet (but had a Res delete on the S3).

Gearbox and drive is extremely smooth, smoother than the S3 honestly. Is what it seems. At time I felt the gear changes in the S3 when accelerating quickly to be quite harsh, not had the same in the S5.

Feels just as quick and nimble as an S3. Kept up with an S3 through Milton Keynes a few weeks back now

Finance not much more, insurance a lot cheaper and fuel economy not much worse. Was a win win win for me

If you're near the Cambridge area I'd be happy to show you

That’s good to know, tempting me even more :tearsofjoy: must admit I enjoyed the test drive that I had, it was a sportback and I’d be getting the coupe but like you say they still feel fairly nimble in the corners! The one I’m looking at has a pano roof so hopefully I’ll be able to hear the engine and exhaust a little clearer too

Thanks for the offer of meeting up but I’m over in Lincolnshire so not too nearby but appreciate it all the same, sounds like you made the right choice switching :icon thumright:
