Hi, just looking for some inevitable confirmation if anyone can help
the car is a 2006 b7 1.9 tdi 115bhp
at the moment there is white smoke from the exhaust on tickover
slight pastiness to the oil on the inside of the filler cap
The car is running very lumpy and uneven on tickover.
There is only 138k miles on the car and I have never seen one of these to have a blown head gasket before
So I'm just looking for someone to confirm the worst please
Also any ideas of cost- main dealer? Or independent ? Which would be best
cheers for any advice

to find out for sure take it to a good indy
and have it checked
cant say yes or no witout seeing it.

Just been told by local main dealer that head gasket is very unusual.
they seem to think its a egr cooler and that would have the same ssymptoms.
does anyone know anything about this?

when my egr cooler pipe went it didnt make smoke or anything just had an amazing whistle when you pressed the accel.. or driving around. tho i cannot say it isnt all depends where /if its damaged.
you could clean the egr valve and see if it goes.

One garage thought my symptoms might have been the egr cooler - lumpy idle, rough running, excessive smoke - so it might not be beyond the realms of possibility on your car.

According to Audi they reckon its highly unusual for an a4 with 130k miles to blow its gasket.
It's gone in now for inspection tomorrow so we shall se, hope it is the cooler and not the gasket.
i will update as soon as I get more news

Well **** does happen!!!
audi rang me today and confirmed the head is shot.
needs a new head, they reckon.
have to wait till Monday for the price as they are on to head office to see if we can get some kind of goodwill gesture???
anyone got any idea what this sort of thing would cost

Is it possible to have a tdi head skimmed and tested?
audi tell me it's not and want me to purchase a new head.
or is it possible to use a second hand head from same model engine code.
mine is a 115bhp, but can I use a head from 130 bhp etc?
any advice would be grateful :))

Audi won't fit a reconditioned head, they will just fit new heads. Tdi heads can be lightly skimmed, however depends on the head gasket thickness. I would just pay for the diagnostic and just take the car to a good independent ! Heads between the 8 valve engines are interchangeable however i would buy a new head cast and swap all your valves and springs + cam. A decent aftermarket cast will be about £500, add a head gasket kit, new bolts and a cambelt kit + water pump and oil and you'll spend about a grand on parts. Labour is about £300-500 depending where you go...

Well, had a chat with Audi this morning.
new head , gasket kit, cambelt kit, water pump, full service, and two rear brake lines replaced for €1500 (£1200) approx.
managed to convince them to do a full service on my 2.5 a6 also for the same price and a courtesy car for the same price.
reasonably happy, as you can be for that kind of money.
whats bugging me is that they can't explain why it happened, which is annoying.
its the wife's car and rarely sees 60mph
