In theory if you just removed the front drive shafts and possibly installed a couple of LSD's would it not be RWD? Maybe find some way of completely locking the haldex clutch, just weld it together, bodge it... surely someone could do this back yard ghetto modding stylee!?

Froma recent thread post (which might be best not spoken about again!),just out of interest can someone shine a bit more light on this? even better can some one try it!?

...even better can some one try it!?

Off you go then....

TBH this is a pointless discussion... I have seen plenty of modded cars in my time and have seen AWD conversions on Ford Fiestas, RWD Mk3 Escorts and 400hp Cossie lumps in Mk2 Escorts etc....

Anything is possible but why bodge a system that only designed to be connected when its needed...

If you want to do this, strip to a bare shell and shoe horn an inline engine, gearbox, propshaft and rear diff in... there will be a shed load of fabrication work involved but not sure what you would gain...

Its been done in older VW's for motorsport and such where the shells get space framed etc...
This sort of work isn't the normal fair on ASN tbh... Audi is normally associated with that level of modification due to the typically high price of buying a doner car... and why RWD a quattro...

In this day and age I can't really see this ever being a project that anyone would want to under take... you may as well just spend the money on a Caterham or something..

Back in the day when I had my Mk2 Escort then you could get away with building cars like this... with tighter legislation and the way MOT's are evolving I can't really see too many people being that interested in undertaking this level of modification... yeah it has its novelty appeal and is a nice discussion point but it would soon be forgotten about when someone slaps a GT35 to his S3 and starts doing 11's at Pod...

IIRC the MTM S3 with the RS4 engine in it owed QTS around 50k...

<tuffty/>

A hatchback and RWD is never the best setup anyway handling wise so better to stick with 4WD tbh. Especially one thats been butchered together. Its why the Saxo`s and so on with spaceframe rears and K20 Honda engines are useless.

Off you go then....
Yea, i might do if my S3 wasn't my everydayer and if i was in the same country as the car

TBH this is a pointless discussion...
As i said, i was only asking purely out of interest more than anything else.

Cos a RWD S3 would be totally unique and side ways is fun! I just wanted to know what would happen if you just took out the front drive shafts, and maybe added LSDs. In theory would it drive like a RWD car or would the haldex just go nuts and make the car undrivable... I'd imagine you'd get through a a few haldex clutches thats for sure!

If you want to do this, strip to a bare shell and shoe horn an inline engine, gearbox, propshaft and rear diff in... there will be a shed load of fabrication work involved but not sure what you would gain...
Sounds expensive... i was just wondering whether it could be done cheaply just for fun. "back yard ghetto mechanics style"

maybe one day when i got a bit o' time and some money to throw about I'll have a little play... I would say I'll let you know how i get on if I try it but you don't sounds particularly interested and possible a little offended at the idea of messing with the haldex system in the name of side ways fun?

Back in my Renault 5 Turbo days one of the guys in the RTOC fitted the 1.4 turbo lump into the rear of his car. RWD in a short wheel based car = going round in circles lol

ha ha! yea, I used to be on RTOC, think I've seen that... i can imagine it'd be an absolute had full on boost! :scared2:

rear engined mini's with motorbike engines seem to be pretty good on track tho. i suppose the high end power lack of torque makes it a lot more manageable on track. Still, would probs be pretty twitchy!

I don't think Tuffty is un-interested, more you asked for opinions he gave you his, and as he has (quite rightly) said its a ridiculous idea and it would be more work then its worth.

^ this.

Ok fair point and yea, it is a pretty stupid idea, even i know that! I totally appreciate Tufftys opinion but no one's actually answered my question yet. I just wanted to know, purely out of interest, what'd happen if you took the front driveshafts out...

yea, maybe it is a bit of a pointless topic seeing as it's unlikely I'll ever try it but as an enthusiast it was just something i was wondering about and wanted to know what in theory might happen...

It's not impossible to make an A3 quattro RWD with the standard running gear, but I doubt it would be reliable or be able to handle much power!

If you disconnect the front drive shafts, I guess you would probably damage the Haldex clutch, since no wheel slip is detected, it will only engage fully on full throttle, if you have a performance Haldex controller, then it would lock up fully on 50% throttle or more. There was an S3 owner who bypassed the Haldex ECU and locked up his Haldex clutch fully, so if you did this and take the front drive shafts out, it should = a RWD A3!!

But before you go and do this, I need to warn you that the transfer box puts stress on the gearbox, as it was suppose to operate part time, to mate it handle all the power would knacker it sharply I believe, not to mention the amount the Haldex clutch running gear etc. It should work, but I don't know how much power it could handle and it would be a lot of transmission losses for the effort.

Thanks JoJo... a constructive answer to the question i actually asked in the first place, basically telling me exactly what i was interested to hear:icon_thumright:

It's an interesting concept ,but biiiiiiiiig money
chase your dream I'd love to see it :)
im guessing you've come from a rear wheel drive car previously ?

I give my car quite a bit of rear end action but it doesn't come easy you have to give it loads, and by doing that I manage to eat the clutch quick

Yea,I got fed up of fixing modified cars all the time and using my prideand joy as a work horse (I drove about 150 miles a day for work) so I bought a 318 compact at auction thinking it would be a nice boring little work horse that'd be no fun to drive and I wouldn't feel theneed to modify it or drive it like it's stolen.... Turns out I was wrong and it was actually f*king good fun to drive (specially in the wet!) but yea, I had to give it hell to get it sideways in the dry. Bit of a Scandinavian flick and a dump on the clutch usually did the trick ;-) Went through a few engine mounts and a clutch tho :-/
I'm in thailand at the mo but I can't f*king wait to come home in april and getthe S3 back on the road, got a fresh set of coilovers waiting to go on along with a couple of other goodies. I'm sure the coilies will help me have a bit o' fun on the round abouts. Also used to have a EG civic, the independent suspension coupled with coilies made it surprisingly eager for a bit of lift off over-steer. I'm hoping the combination of independent suspension on the S3, coilies, 4wd and 270(ish) break should lead for an interesting drive with the potential for a bit o' sideways action. Don't live to far from you, maybe you can show me how it's done some time!? ha ha!

Anytime dude there's a few of us local lads that love a good tare up :)

Good thread. Coming from RWD, i do feel that the S3 could do with being a bit more rear wheel happy.
I have thought about trying to do something, but as said, not worth the effort, or money.
Think of the car you could have with the money you'd end up spending!!!
