Anyone any solid advice on weather this is safe or not? I have a stage 2 s3 8v and would like the extra crackle but couple of local tuners dont seem too keen on doing this as they reckon its not great for the car? Alot of the well known guys dont seem to mind doing it so was just wondering before i sway from my usual place?

My own opinion is you can run it but is really for decat cars as it can damage the cat.

It’s called a crackle map. But as I have already mentioned previously tuners advise against it due to damaging the car. Which I’m not 100% sure but I imagine will through up a warning if excessive damage occurs and also will fail emissions.

I myself resign to the fact I’m driving a 4cylinder vehicle and it sounds that way even with a powervalve TBE, which does give a nice little pop now and again on aggressive upchanges.

It's wasting gas and dumping it out of the exhaust. You run the risk of premature sensor wear, and at a rare scenario, even fouling plugs.

Personally, I think it's annoying and isn't done correctly like Audi's originally does it.

    Unless you're a chav or a ned, I wouldn't bother.

Speak to Unicorn motor developments, they do an impulse map, that will provide as many pops and bangs that any man (chavs or neds notwithstanding) could possibly desire.

furthermore, if you have a facelift (not sure if it has the same effect on the pre facelift) , you can "delete" the resonator and permanently open the flaps, it wont pop on demand, but it will pop lots, and crackle a bit, and drone a bit at 2700 RPM, and generally be louder, which appeals to my sensibilities (or lack thereof).

Ive been thinking about this for a while too..

I spoke to MRC and they advised me it could only be done in conjunction with a decat..

Although as mentioned above, Unicorn Motor Developme ts have mapped loads of S3/R's and added there impulse map..

Im intrested in it but abit sceptical as dont want to ruin my car..

Its getting mapped at the end of the month so as much info as possible would be :thumbs up:

One of my engineers has a mk7.5 Golf, he got the resonator taken out about a month after he had it delivered, and got it Revo stage 1 about 2 months after that, suffice to say I very much so enjoy being in his car. Its been 6 months now of constant popping and crackling, and the cat hasn't spontaneously combusted, obviously its throwing unburnt fuel into the exhaust and cat to make the pops, so its going to reduce the life of the cat, but thats something i would personally be prepared to trade for giggling like a child when driving.

Ive already done the res delete also along with a full Racingline VWR600 intake..

Suppose if the cat sh!ts itself its an excuse for a decat/sportscat..

I don’t suppose you have any before / after recordings of the sound?

We offer switchable impulse as an addition to our custom software, so you chose when you want that extra pop/bang.

The most popular arrangement with our customers is as follows:
    Eco - Standard power
    Normal - Mapped
    Sport - Mapped + impulse

It's perfectly safe, as Rick ensures that temperatures are correctly controlled when enabling the software.

Crackle like mad with a de-res exhaust without a map anyway? Personally I wouldn't want it to crackle anymore than it already does :)
