Poor Tyre Wear

Hi Guys,

After some advice on the way my tyres are wearing on the front. I’ve got a weird line straight down the middle of the tread on both tyres, as pictured.

The pressures are bang on the recommended 39PSI and always have been? 5300 miles on them now. The insides are also wearing terribly :-( Its just had 4 wheel alignment, wasn’t the worst I’ve seen but not the best.. spot on now though.

It’s solid, it’s like the Tyre tread is 0.5mm greater in that line really odd. It’s a perfect line right down the middle.

I thought this would suggest underinflation?

Hi Matt, for what it’s worth I was told by the wheel guy when I was getting my alignment that you will get abit of wear on the inside of these type of cars with the way the camber is setup on them. Can not answer the line in the middle though mate.

Its probably just a seam from the mould.

Have to watch the inside of the tyre then - they have toed the camber out a far bit by the looks of it.

Exactly the same line in the middle on my S3 tyres (Dunlop sportmax something?). Wearing more on the inside edge to, as has been said camber set up will cause this. Recent visit to dealer reported between 4-2.5mm tread depth remaining after 13k miles and no concern over the wear as both sides were the same.

Yeah they probably are set up that way, more for handling than efficiency.
The line in the middle is very odd, I’ve seen it on Continental tyres before on one of my cars (can’t think which), but I thought there had to be a reason and a way of correcting it. The line in the middle is less scrubbed in that the rest indicating it’s not touching the tarmac in my mind. The rears are perfect, even wear all across and no line in the middle..

Pointless asking Audi, they won’t have a damn clue haha.

It’s drveloped with age, it wasn’t like that from new.

Yeah I am going to keep an eye on it, didn’t plan on tyres so soon.. damn.

Strange :/ Do you regularly check the tyre pressures, do you run them as recommended?

I’ve got 5300 miles on these, I really don’t drive it that hard.

Probably not checked regularly enough but never need topped up that much.

Just found this pic from April 17, so far 4months old approx 3-4k miles probably and line is visible as well as the nail lol

I’ve just had a brain wave and decided to ask the specialists themselves, I’ve send a message to Pirelli on Facebook.

Strictly I think they should be checked weekly, but I haven’t topped mine up for a couple of months as the live TPMS in the RS3 show me the pressures haven’t moved. In my S3 I found myself doing them every 2-3 weeks.

That’s one hell of a nail haha! I like the Dunlop branding in the tread, that’s cool!

Just as a matter of interest can you check when the tyres were made and how old they are ( will be on side of tyre )?It may be they were old stock when the car was built , I would be sending an e mail and photos to Dunlop to ask if its a manufacturing fault .

They are a 2016 tyre so not an age thing.
Not to concerned about it if I’m honest, will be changed soon and lease company picks up the tab.

I think you're being a bit dramatic mate. Tyre and tread looks fine. Just looks like a seam line. You won't need to change your tyres for many 1000's of miles yet. I got 15k out of mine and wasn't exactly driving like my gran.

My fronts wore out after just 9k miles! Swapped to MPSS which were still going 32k later.

Just asking a question, because obviously if the tyres are under pressure to cause that then they aren’t at optimum. Will see what Pirelli come back with and might put an extra PSI or two in the tyres.

Matt, my tyres are looking exactly the same as yours with the slight centre ridge. I dont think its anything to worry about. Maybe its what makes the tyres specific to Audi with the R02 rating.

Seems as if yours are acting like they are overinflated and mine are as if they are under inflated.

What pressures do you run?

Its normal just indicator , when its worn it means tire is dead. And yes not affecting performances at all !

This is an insert of a polymer compound with a high loading of carbon which is combined in the tread extrudate. It is incorporated in the treads of road tyres which use compounds with high silica content designed to achieve the best handling characteristics plus offer eco friendly advantages such as reduced rolling resistance to aid better fuel consumption. The anti static strip does tend to wear at a slower rate and also appears raised and sometimes with the edges feathered.”

Next time buy directional tyres. When you start getting uneven tyre wear, swap them around on the rim but make sure they still point the same way. Job done. My 8P S3 is notorious for chewing rear inner tyres wall.
